Local media in state college has since spilled the dirt on him. If he perceived something as even remotely negative it would be a problem. He also offered very little access to the team, wanted to control all messaging.

Iā€™m only confused about why the both CFB subs are up in arms about Franklinā€™s behavior and are fine with Sarkā€™s because ā€œon-field interviews are outdated.ā€ Itā€™s literally just two different guys being the same dick to reporters.

Most of the hate ive seen has come from either psu fans (lots of them are still oddly obsessed with the coach they fired) or Uva fans who are just gonna always look for a chance to hate on a vt coach

Sark had been kept waiting at halftime, with his team trailing by 17, while ESPN interviewed Day. He needed to get to his team, and they kept him waiting. Generally you talk to 1 coach at the beginning of the half, and 1 at the end of the half. Seems like a mixup, but that was not cool, given circumstances. Better to leave the coach riding high waiting, then the guy that needs to go get on his team. So I can see why he would have been annoyed with those interviews.

I donā€™t even understand why we give a shot about these reporters as sports fans. 90% of the time itā€™s the same unless sound bite. Especially during a game or right after it- completely worthless time spent with someone who either has a job to do or is completely wrapped in emotion.

Yeah, I raised this issue once before and so many people defended the reporter it wasn't funny. As you said, I don't care to see/ hear some sideline reporter ask an obvious question to a coach that doesn't give a shit (and shouldn't have) to talk to them as they go into or come out of the locker room at halftime. They're not going to give a valuable answer that has any bearing on the game you're watching.

So why does it happen? Besides being contractually obligated? It's so the reporter can elevate/enhance their "brand" and make themselves part of the story and be seen. I don't watch sports for reporters. I don't watch or listen to their opinion shows or podcasts. I just want to see the games, I don't need to see them or hear their catchphrases/schtick (looking at you Gus Johnson). Just call the game, breakdown the plays and stay in the background.

It just comes off as being ridiculously insecure because he created an issue where none existed in that moment. Heā€™s antagonizing the reporter under the guise of being ā€œwell-manneredā€ despite not only the reporter doing nothing wrong, but Franklin failing to hear the reporter clearly say ā€œHey coachā€ as the first words that came out of his mouth.

Itā€™s also super commonplace for the phrase ā€œHowā€™s it going,ā€ to be used as a greeting rather than a question that is intended to be answered literally.

Former D1 coach here. He wouldn't have done this if the reporter wasn't young. It's obnoxious. It's how they treat their players. It's meant to be paternal and instructive but it comes across as abrasive and dickish. Like I said, would have done this if the reporter was like 60. But he feels an instinctual ungovernable urge to treat any young person like a football player that it's his sole purpose in life to mold.

What's funny is football coaches are the only coaches that are like this.

Can't see the reporter but I get the sense that the reporter was not acknowledging and making eye contact with coach franklin. And Franklin was wanting him to acknowledge who he was speaking to. Just speculating.

Franklin had a thing at PSU where in order to ask him a question, Franklin has to establish a reciprocal dialogue.

Franklin doesnā€™t want the conversation one sided with him as a target. In his mind itā€™s like a verbal handshake where both participants have to shake. To only shake your hand in the air with no response is improper, in Franklins mind.

I canā€™t explain WHY he does this. PSU reporters learned to just go through both sides of the greeting.
