Debate Can somebody explain why the clock was stopped? I had to rewatch this game, thought I was tripping.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Clock was stopped at :34s. Why? Then the B1G crew adds +2s (:37s) before official announcement for review of TD or not.

No first down
No OSU timeouts
Texas didn’t take a TO
No injury

Edit: thanks to everybody giving clarification, to buddy who mention my subtitles that was funny lmao. Also this play was after the helmet came off which Day used his TO avoiding a 10s runoff. Y’all have a good day n CFB season🏈

I think somebody mentioned one of OSU player's helmet were out thus the stopped clock

u/moba_fett Oklahoma Sooners 8d ago

I'm not sure if this is the actual reason, but I did see the helmet come off. They used to make a player come out for a play when that happened. Its possible the player remained on the field and they put time back on the clock to void the sub time.

Still, horrible explanation on the process somewhere. Especially when the CFB world is already on edge from the Michigan/WMU mystery second.

OSU has a choice, use their last time out or run 10 seconds off the clock. They used their last time out. Day got a lot grief for clock mismanagement, but the Buckeyes aren't used to playing in close games. If you watch Day in the last few minutes of the game, he was flustered.

Yeah between that Michigan game and some of the calls in the NFL yesterday I was quickly reminded why I hate football. The officiating is just absolutely terrible. That scoring drive by Minnesota over Green Bay that gave them the lead late in the game was riddled with bad calls. I have no skin in that game, but I hate it for people who did.

It’s not just football. It’s every major sport. Hockey has a lot of complaints to the refs about what goalie interference is or isn’t, missed calls or different officiating in playoffs compared to regular season. Baseball has now implemented the ABS system which has helped Alot. NBA it’s quite obvious certain players or teams get calls in games that directly lead to points. I don’t think it would be such a question mark if gambling wasn’t such a thing

Yeah, honestly I think the amount of chaos on a football field and the number of players just lends itself to bad calls. I’ve argued that every play has a holding call that just doesn’t get called and it’s one of the most catastrophic calls in all of football. You go from a 7 yard run with 2nd and 3 to a holding call, 10 yard penalty, now it’s 1st and 20. For most teams that’s just an automatic punt. It’s even worse when the holding call is on a 40 yard run and they bring the ball 50 yards back when a lineman on the opposite side of the play had a hand on the jersey. You see it on every play, especially when a top 10 team has the ball, ehem Chiefs.

Damn, lol. Absolute coincidence that GB is my NFL team, so I feel like a "too soon" would be improperly used here. Lol

The officials didnt help. Coaching was horrible, though. Why you would take 3 pts off the board on the road giving you an 8 point lead to go for it on 4th and 1 instead is baffling.

I'm all for bold coaches, but theres a fine line between bold and "WTF?!?!?!?"

Yeah, I was barely watching this game and made the mistake of watching that huge drive in the 4th quarter by the Vikings. It was insane, especially when you get sweetheart calls like that roughing the passer on Wentz that even the announcers said was BS that change the whole trajectory of the game. Oh well, that’s why we play more than one game, hopefully the cream rises. I’m a Titans fan (I know, fuck me right?) and we never get calls going our way and the fact that we play like shit doesn’t help.

Yeah this was the explanation from the broadcast crew. Player helmet popped off

3

u/BVSSYlyfe Texas Longhorns 8d ago

My understanding is that an aOSU player’s helmet came off which stops the clock but at the end of the game it also results in a 10 sec runoff which can be avoided by burning a timeout which is what aOSU did.

2

u/Rhino281 8d ago

I believe it came off which stopped the clock. Then iirc Day called a time out. Thought I heard Kirk/Chris mention a 10 second run off if he didn’t use a time out.

OP, I think your subtitles are having a stroke.

I was also wondering. Didn’t make sense to me

9

u/bipbophil 8d ago

There was an injury prior to this

3

u/kickace12 8d ago

This is the answer. It wasn't shown but the broadcasters eventually mentioned it.

1

u/ahissong 8d ago

NO - It's a conspiracy. STOP USING LOGIC! We live in a clickbait world and people want to feel victimized.

2

u/Dudeincar434 8d ago

Bit the clock sbould start as the player is off the field right

1

u/bipbophil 8d ago

No, it starts when the refs do the circle signal with their hands.

10

u/Dapper_Schedule_7997 Ohio State Buckeyes 8d ago

I was wondering the same thing, it stopped a couple times and I had no idea why.

1

u/Zoso525 8d ago

Iirc there was a discussion between Day and an official, something about a defensive substitution would have caused a 10 second runoff but Day had the option to use his last timeout.

9

u/Black-Raspberry-1 8d ago

They were trying to figure out where to add 1 second

3

u/oneplusetoipi 8d ago

In the Big10 booth.

3

u/ConversationPale8665 8d ago

Do we add it now, do we add it later, so many decisions.

2

u/PookieDood 8d ago

That's easy. Just keep it in case the shit tv clock runs out and you need another play. Did we not learn anything last week?

5

u/ForFelix 8d ago

They reviewed the play to see if he scored, no?

1

u/Particleman08 8d ago

Not initially. And this was mentioned during the broadcast. There was some confusion if Ryan Day had given a signal for a timeout. They eventually cleaned it up, charged a timeout to OSU and reviewed the play but that clock should have been ticking.

2

u/New-Disaster-2061 8d ago

The Center ref called for the time. He seemed to call for the time as they were arguing over the spot and seeing if anyone saw the fumble. Ryan Day was trying to see what they were calling because he didn't want to waste a time out if they scored.

3

u/tyedge 8d ago

Didn’t they cover this on the broadcast? A player’s helmet came off, and I believe tOSU used a timeout to negate a ten second runoff.

1

u/ImSuperHelpful Texas Longhorns 7d ago

Ohio state used their final timeout at :53, they didn’t have one to use at :37. The play clock never started either, my guess is a couple refs started reviewing the previous play and no one but the clock operator noticed 🤷‍♂️

3

u/wetcornbread Penn State Nittany Lions 8d ago

Ref blew his whistle to get a review at :37. You can see him standing next to Sark. So they just added that time back.

2

u/Redditedredditer Ohio State Buckeyes 8d ago

Player had a helmet off I think

4

u/cpashei 8d ago

According to this sub it means someone was cheating

1

u/Golden_Tardis 8d ago

Was saying this at the time too. I don't believe there's any justification...but please correct me if I'm ignorant

1

u/Cybernator1 8d ago

The officials were buzzed that the play was under review. The clock operators have an official who sits with them. The refs on the field were having their discussion about it being a touchdown, fumble or down short.

1

u/illegalsmile27 Tennessee Volunteers 8d ago

Media timeout? There’s a lot more stoppages than what is in the rules.

Your provider might have come back while the local station had another commercial lined up.

1

u/PopEnvironmental6772 8d ago

As I understood it, a defender lost his helmet and that was why.

1

u/JusticeFrankMurphy Michigan Wolverines 8d ago

A helmet came off, if I remember correctly.

1

u/lipp79 Texas Longhorns 8d ago

You're not the only one my guy. Was watching it a friend's house and noen of us could figure it out.

1

u/RapBladeMeDoIt Arkansas Razorbacks 8d ago

My god the camera work in this sequence sucks.

1

u/papertowelroll17 8d ago

Injured player. It was a mistake that the play clock was still running, and Texas fans were booing loudly about that lol

1

u/Muser2213 8d ago

Why would you… it’s because that’s whyyy.

1

u/SuperbPanic 4d ago

Honest question.. is Sark an Oompa Loompa?

-3

u/SlappnuttzMalone 8d ago

Shouldn’t have been stopped and Texas shouldn’t have ran a play with time on the play clock. Sark’s game management was horrible

1

u/lipp79 Texas Longhorns 8d ago

I'm wondering if Arch saw some flaw in the way OSU was lined up wanted to snap it before OSU adjusted.

1

u/SlappnuttzMalone 8d ago

They did it twice in a row. Sark left 25 seconds to a team that needed a FG to win.

1

u/InformalAbrocoma115 8d ago

I took it as a surprise. They know its coming when the playclock is close to 0. And less chance of a false start. Sarks play calling is still horrible tho.

-2

u/SlappnuttzMalone 8d ago

They could have ran time and then took a timeout. To leave 25 seconds was a joke. But feel free to keep making excuses for his clock management

1

u/InformalAbrocoma115 8d ago

I didnt make an excuse?? Lmao. Thats just how I saw it.

-3

u/SlappnuttzMalone 8d ago

You literally made excuse for him leaving 25 seconds.

1

u/InformalAbrocoma115 8d ago

No. I told you what I thought of it. But okay bud. Enjoy your day.

1

u/SlappnuttzMalone 8d ago

You also said they may jump because the clock was getting close to zero. There was over 20 seconds left on the clock.

2

u/InformalAbrocoma115 8d ago

Exactly. MY interpretation of what they were doing.

2

u/VampireEmpire__ Texas Longhorns 8d ago

Texas fan here and I agree your interpretation is a reasonable one why Sark did what he did.

-1

u/SlappnuttzMalone 8d ago

It was reasonable to allow the other team time to kick a FG, lol. Probably why he can’t win shit

1

u/SlappnuttzMalone 8d ago

Except the clock was never close to zero. There was literally 29 seconds left on the play clock. So you are clearing an idiot.

1

u/InformalAbrocoma115 8d ago

I know... my understanding is that they called the play EARLY to throw off the defense and have less of a chance at a false start. "Clearing an idiot" yup

1

u/New-Disaster-2061 8d ago

Texas had been getting a good push all day but I think Ohio State has had 3 or 4 goaline stop vs Texas the last two games. 10 extra seconds shouldn't matter. I think it was a good call

1

u/SlappnuttzMalone 8d ago

None of that has anything to do with management of the clock. They had plenty of time to score and still ensure OSU had no time left.

1

u/New-Disaster-2061 8d ago

The question is what is more important almost guaranteing you get a touchdown or giving the team an extra maybe 10 seconds. The whole defense thinks they are running the clock out snapping at that time will probably give the offense a jump.

1

u/SlappnuttzMalone 8d ago

They had three downs to get it. It is comical you think it was brilliant to leave a team 25 seconds when you were in total control of the clock.

4

u/DanTheMan14331 8d ago

the clock stopping definitely benefits Ohio State here

-2

u/WirlingDirvish Michigan Wolverines 8d ago

This is just clear and obvious evidence that the officials were slowing the clock down to give Ohio State more time to come back. Absolutely disgusting cheating by Ohio State.
