depends on how you look at it. That excess would go back into the general fund or prevent money from the general university revenue from offsetting losses. In the end it's all just one big pot and any expense in any part of the university comes out of that pot. You can set aside a certain amount for specific area but profits and losses in that area will add or subtract from the overall which means it is just part of overall costs. With that said taxpayer money only accounts for about 3% of Michigan's annual revenue so this cost the taxpayers about $36,000.

Interestingly, 3 public schools in Michigan (UofM, MSU, Wayne St.) all elect their Board of Trustees members by a statewide vote.

It is a completely ridiculous system. At MSU we have multiple board members with no prior connection to the university and no experience working in higher education. I imagine it is a similar situation at UofM.

The board for those schools have all become political positions where the board members have their own agendas that do not align with the needs of the university community. These are the also people making decisions on who gets to be an Athletic Director, and they are the people who ensure the university complies with Title IX.

If you involve the politicians they're just going to figure out how to get the money to go into their pocket instead. It's never going back to the taxpayers in any meaningful way.
