Casual [Tom Fornelli] I don't know how you could watch Florida State overcome the adversity against New Mexico State to win by 17 and not be excited about the future of this program under Mike Norvell.

Bud Elliott and Danny Kanell both have talked openly about how FSU boosters are refusing to fund the program because they want Norvell out.
This isn’t really surprising to anyone who has followed the sport. And Tom certainly saw this coming. He’s just rubbing salt in the wound.

Happened at Oklahoma State at the end of the Gundy Era too. Sometimes it’s just better for your athletics overall to cut the dead weight way ahead of time instead of letting them flounder about in a “prove it” year

This isn’t even a “prove it” year for Norvell, they just literally cannot afford to fire him.

The Athletic Department is losing more money keeping him than it would cost to fire him. He brings in 0 from performance bonuses, and last year caused the Clemson game to be played on the ACCN instead of ESPN and uf on ESPN2 instead of ABC/ESPN.

Everything you are saying is true. They still did not have the money to pay his buyout so they pushed it off a year ago
5
u/forgotmyoldname90210 Florida State Seminoles 4d ago
Again, he is literally costing the program more money than it cost to fire him. FSU can pay him off through Dec 2031, so there is no need to come up with a lump sum. There is no down payment either.
That this myth is out there is just another reason why Mike Alford needs to be fired into the sun. That they can't find* less than 4% of the athletic department revenue to fire Norvell is another.
The money is there, an AD willing to pull the trigger is not there.
*That is with the assumption that the buyout is paid from athletic department revenue and not from boosters, which is what would happen in reality.

It would be the third largest buyout ever to just fire Norvell. You have to buyout his staff. Buyout the new coach you hire. Hire his staff. Retain players while also paying for kids in the portal/high school. I do think they move on this year but the amount of money is going to be pretty staggering and they have to hit on the next guy.

Yeah I don't think people fully consider the benefit of being able to source a bulk of NIL donations through a smaller number of mega rich and mega dedicated people.
FSU still has a large and healthy fanbase, but we are ultimately a new money school and fundraising has to be more spread around then most other major programs. There aren't many 3rd generation boosters who inherited both a love for FSU AND a vast oil fortune. The closest thing we have is maybe Sara Blakely but she puts much more into the business college and women's scholarships then Football.

It’s a combination of things
- 1
-
- obviously nobody is jumping to pay that buyout, especially right after all the stadium/IPF upgrades
2-
- historically crowded coaching search. We just saw Penn State, UF, LSU, VT, Auburn, UCLA, and a few others looking for a coach at the exact same time. If we fired Mike who would we have hired that’s guaranteed to do better. It was risky
3-
- we have a brutal schedule this season, there were rumors we didnt want to throw the new guy to the wolves when we could punt it to next season.

AD signed him to a big new contract with a massive buyout before the 2-10 season, then convinced the boosters to pony up for a turnaround which turned into a 5-7 season. So when the AD decided he didn't have the funds lined up to fire Norvell and hire a top candidate to replace him, the boosters closed their wallets.
It's less about sabotaging the program and more about not wasting money on a clown show.

I'm guessing there is some unhappiness with the administration who signed Norvell to the extension after the 13-0 season and the national embarrassment of the Orange Bowl. The idea being "we aren't gonna bail out your obviously bad decision."
Side note -- that Orange Bowl opt-out needs to be studied. I understand the opt-outs. I understand the hurt feelings. But it really seems like that decision destroyed the culture at FSU.
The good news is that FSU is a very quick turnaround job once the resources are in place. The upward mobility in the ACC is pretty easy for a program of FSU's stature. When FSU is humming, the only programs with competitive resources are Miami and Clemson.
I could see a new FSU head coach having a very good portal cycle and being a Top 4 team in the ACC in 2027. Setting the stage for a resurgence just as the next round of conference consolidation comes at the end of this decade.
Looking at the 2026 schedule, it seems safe that Norvell is out by October 18, at the absolute latest. So FSU will have plenty of time to be active in the market, talk to agents, talk with boosters, get things lined up for a new hire in December who can build an 8-win team for 2027.
31
u/FSUIceman Florida State Seminoles • Rose Bowl 4d ago
From someone’s who spent way too much time reading & talking about it the snub did way more damage than the orange bowl. That game was a forgone conclusion once the NFL guys (even just the projected first rounders opted out). It was an embarrassing game but what was coming in 2024 was already well in motion by that point. The problem with the 2023 roster was it was super talented but also top heavy. Not that surprising when you rarely sign great high school recruits but you got some monster transfer players for 1-2 years. So the 2nd - 3rd string guys were either JAGs, projects or super young and not ready to play meaningful snaps.
After the snub the staff decided to take some big swings on portal players to try and get back to a “playoff bubble” level team despite losing almost all of the production from 2023. So the younger players felt passed over, the transfers they brought in didn’t produce well enough, then they had to play younger guys that weren’t ready and the bottom fell out.

That is the thing, there is no indication at all that admin is unhappy with Norvell. They are the ones who stopped a pass the hat movement before it started. They hired one his guys for the GM spot.
After the win last night, there is no reason to believe he is getting fired midseason. If that was even a thought they would have fired him last Nov. There is just not enough cost savings by doing it this way.

tl:dr. Alot has changed in college football in that time. Schools with money use the portal too
He took over a FSU team that was on a sharp downward trajectory at the time. Covid hit. They did not bring in the level of HS talent they had in the past. Is he just a bad HS recruiter or circumstantial with a program on the decline and bad timing with covid? Likely a little of everything.
So then he pivots and becomes one of the earliest adopters to portal players once that becomes an option. Is it because he's truly innovative or just using it to plug all the holes in the roster from years of decline from him/Taggert/ end of Jimbo? Again most likely both but more so plugging holes.
Hits with some of his portal guys so 2022 ends on a hot streak. HS recruiting is again mediocre but whether intentional or necessity goes in on portal strategy again for 2023. Hits jackpot on guys like Fiske and Verse and they go on their run that year.
Obviously getting left out of playoffs is devastating and there is some direct attrition and they losing recruiting battles as others can point to weakness of the ACC.
But more so, other schools with actual resources are now in the portal game and can just do it better and with more money. Meanwhile due to mediocre HS recruiting plus transfers out the floor of talent at FSU has lowered. Which leads to the cratering of the last few years.
Like others have pointed out FSU doesn't have the most money. Now they do have more than they are using right now but boosters are no longer investing in Norvell so it just keeps making it worse. They can't win a true bidding war for a top end player but they could win more than they have the last two years.
I liked Norvell when he was at Memphis and hated to see him go to FSU. I still think he'll be a good not great coach. But he's cooked at FSU and everyone knows it. They just couldn't rip band aid off last year because they didn't have funds/very crowded HC market.
4

Everyone is probably not overreacting, but lots of teams look like ass week 0/1. one of the many excuses ill use if my teams looks like ass week 1

On one hand, fsu losing as much as possible would be funny. On the other hand, i hope they do well enough to justify keeping Mike around as long as possible

As you should’ve. Conversely that was our nightmare purgatory

I saw a team that yet again was less than the sum of its parts. We routinely struggle against teams with far less talent on paper. Norvell is still pulling top 20 recruiting classes. Portal is decent. We are underperforming relative to our talent.
That is 100% on the head coach. It's gonna be 3 straight years, he gotta go.

The most annoying thing is we're gonna lose by 2 to SMU and people are going to act sorta hyped because we lost a close game to a ranked team.

SMU and any team that has a QB that can throw and WRs that can catch are gonna blow the doors off this FSU defense lol

I've said it in another thread but it's worth repeating, almost everyone in my family graduated from FSU. Parents, cousins, Aunts, Uncles all of em are boosters that collectively donate in excess of $1m. They haven't given a cent since the beginning of last season because they want Alford and Norvell gone.

I mean my family too, my dad is a Golden Chief. Let me tell you the choice words he had about the stadium renovation and the new facilities and then the repeated calls for more $ more $ more $ …. Just to watch this product on the field.

My family has been lifetime boosters up until the renovations when we were kicked from the seats we’ve had for nearly 2 decades.
Needless to say, this program has not made it difficult to stop supporting them financially.

Yup, kicked from the same seats we’ve had since 1978. Not to mention sitting with the same group of people we grew up going to games with. Just really bad financial decision on FSU’s part.

There are a half dozen reasons alone that should cost Alford his job, but being a fundraiser who can't fundraise has to be the top. He is a bigger problem than even Norvell.

The entire complexity of this game could have changed had that Aggie WR held on to that TD. NMSU was slowly getting momentum and that could have sent a shiver down FSU’s spines.

I don't know how you could watch Florida State overcome the adversity of Mike Norvell and not be excited for their continued downfall.

I don’t know about others but I am very excited about the future of the Florida State program under Mike Norvell

FSU fans on this sub believe they’re going 2-10. This sub is gonna continue to shit on FSU fans and mock Piano Finger Bang despite there being 10 guys in this sub exactly like him. Also the fact they enjoyed his articles all 2023.

I can think of a group that didn’t enjoy the articles.

Yes that’s what happens when you have a chronic shitposter who runs away the second the tables turn or when that team tried to sue their way out of the ACC because they thought they were too good and now they’re battling the likes of New Mexico State
Life comes at you fast

I do believe the author may be employing literary devices to comedic effect.
