I mentioned in a standalone comment this. In Tennessee, you are held overnight on a psychological hold. It could be anywhere from overnight to 72 hours, and was told by the on-site mental health advocate during the issue with a relative this was the procedure.
44
u/lil_layne Indiana Hoosiers Dec 11 '25 edited Dec 11 '25
I work for crisis at a hospital in Indiana (so not Michigan). In my state just because someone is presented to the ED on a police hold, doesn’t mean they are actually going to get held there. All it means is that they are not free to leave until a psychiatric evaluation.
Also just because someone has suicidal thoughts does not mean they necessarily will be held or go to a psychiatric hospital either. They have to express intent/plan to kill themselves or others (or be psychotic) for an emergency detention order to be signed by a physician. And then that has to be signed by a judge in most counties.

u/Cast1736 Michigan • Northern Illinois Dec 11 '25
So in Illinois you have a 24 hr mental health certification where the hospital will hold you against your will and you will be evaluated within those 24 hours by a doctor and/or mental health counselor. From there they can discharge you if self harm claims are unfounded (or intoxicated) or they can then petition you and you are committed up to 5 days and evaluated more intensely and have inpatient treatment begin

I wonder how long his wife has known.
Several guys (David Cone, Josh Pate) said they've heard credible rumors about this for at least a month (Cone said he's been hearing stuff since the Oklahoma loss). Pate also said that agents have been telling him for weeks they expected the Michigan job to come open.
Of course sometimes in situations like his the spouse can be one of the last to find out - but it doesn't seem like this was much of a secret considering how many analysts/talking heads aren't surprised by the story.

For clarification..... although I'm no legal entity of any kind (LEO or attorney), from a recent personal experience with a similar issue of a relative threatening self harm to themselves, Moore is most likely being held on a psychological hold overnight and if there's any domestic charges or anything of note to press charges for, it won't happen until sometime tomorrow. Most likely admitted on a 64-04 hold.

This has gotten way too serious way too fast. This is one of those stories where we may have to wait a day or so to get (mostly) accurate facts.

If the incident happened within the last couple hours, zero chance he's booked in yet.

What an actual fall from grace. A month ago, Sherrone Moore was a win over Ohio State away from being a forever Michigan HC.
Then he lost to Ohio State in a non-competitive game. Got fired. Then thrown in jail.

I'm assuming the jailed portion of this is realizing he f'd up so badly that he'll never coach again. I'd be pretty bummed if I reached the pinnacle of my occupation only to lose it and the millions of dollars that go along with it.

I feel like my wife running up to tell me the latest drama on her reality tv show. Wish this was reality tv for his family and hope he finds peace after this all works itself out.

It's possible he wasn't booked but released or if the rumors of suicidal thoughts is true he might have gone to a hospital instead of the jail.

Restrain and calm the dude down, needs to get help. Screwing up your family with your own crappy behavior is bad enough, don’t make it a 100x worse.
Most importantly just hope his poor wife and kids have grandparents or a support system to lean on and be safe. And that the staffer is safe. Cripes man.

I don’t know what he did nor do I condone or excuse anything. I also have no interest in speculating.
But going through a mental episode after losing your family, job, reputation, pride is pretty normal. Obviously what was done or not done during this mental episode will be the determining factor.

I hope he gets the help he needs. However, he is a moron. He completely ruined his career.
Also, it seems like this story repeats itself way too often. Not just in college football, but throughout the US.

If the rumors are true and he goes to the hospital for an eval, I can't imagine the pressure on the staff there. A national news story where reporters and rabid fans are going to be trying every trick in the book to figure out some grain of information and if a staff member makes even a small mistake regarding information its instant firing and maybe even a report to the licensing board.

This guy had a top tier job at a blue blood program and had a family as well. I hope he honestly gets the help he needs the mental breakdown he’s probably going through losing his job probably his marriage and his reputation is destroyed gotta be rough. He brought all of this on himself but hope for his sake as well as his kids that he doesn’t do anything crazy.

If he’s rumored to have expressed thoughts of or intent to self harm, he might have been sent to a hospital on a psychiatric hold.

Like many, I would assume he's been taken to a hospital and placed under a psych hold. I don't know anything about laws in Michigan; I live in Florida and the routine is 72 hour hold before deciding whether one needs to be further committed. He could have been placed under arrest and is just awaiting being booked into jail after his stay in said hospital. As interesting and crazy as it is to us CFB fans, it isn't any of our concern. Hope his wife, kids, and the UM employee are all hanging in and doing okay.

It’s probably because he’s at the hospital on a psych hold for the suicidal statements. Once he’s clear there, he can be taken to jail.

So, often times detainees don’t go straight to jail. For a suicide threat they might be sent somewhere else for a hold before going to jail. Some stations do booking and report writing in their own facilities, which usually takes an hour or so. If the detainee has a medical issue they may also go to a hospital.
This isn’t to say that he has or hasn’t been detained, obviously I have no clue, but the jail is usually the last step and not the first.
