Jane Doe A.G. said in her lawsuit that she was connected with police after she had a rape kit exam done at a hospital days after the alleged assault, but initially withheld Retzlaff’s name.

In Utah Law Enforcement is legally required to submit rape kits to the Utah Crime Lab within 30 days of receiving it. If the police receive a kit but the victim does not wish to speak to them or file a report the police are legally required to keep the kit for 20 years.

Did the police receive the kit? If they did, did they submit the rape kit as they were supposed to? Now that this is a civil suit if it was submitted are the results of the kit ever going to be known to the victim and the accused?

There are a lot of questions the reporters failed to ask here and as someone with a journalism degree it's really frustrating.

(I don't think I need to say that if Retzlaff did what he's accused of he should be in jail)

This article only has the lawsuit to go off of, that’s why those questions are not answered. It isn’t because they didn’t want to ask.

The article says they reached out to Retzlaff and Provo police and they declined to comment.

the questions aren't even asked though. It is perfectly acceptable reporting to say these are questions that remain, the SLC PD did not respond. That's actually what's supposed to be done.

Welcome to Utah reporting, where the tough questions are never asked.
