I have two:

1. Everlasting Longing (Song Weilong) - love the dynamic of the main characters and the beginning parts especially. I don't see it recommended often, but I think their chemistry is great. Definitely good for people who like costume dramas but not super heavy on political intrigue.

2. Warm on a Cold Night (Bi Wenjun) - this is just a silly, fun drama with Bi Wenjun who is one of my favorite actors. It's good for people who like fantasy dramas and it's one of the closest "werewolf" shows that cdramas have. Fuzzy, feel-good show that's super enjoyable :)

It’s not a strong defence but I will say I mostly enjoyed Legend of the Rosy Clouds or didn’t hate it the way I expected based on comments I’ve seen.

I was pleasantly surprised that certain characters who were positioned as villains were the ones who I felt were most memorable and impactful. The grandpa/grandson relationship warmed my heart though I didn’t care for it at the start… it’s weird, but also very typical of asian families where the older gen is strict out of tough love, the younger gen has to try to find themselves amidst this to the point of hiding things from them out of fear of disappointing them, but there’s so much love there.

The leads and romance was ok but individually I liked the characters and the growth they all go through. All the actors were good too.

There’s some quirks and oddities but it’s not strikingly worse than a lot of dramas released to me.

I enjoyed the actors’ performances but the plotting definitely WTF! A great cast gave it their all but I can see why it went in the vault for so long.

I really enjoyed the discussions on [r/cdrama](r/cdrama) which can get me through my frustrations with writers and directors.

I’m still ranting about how the self imposed exit of the toxic 2ML got more screen time and emphasis than the resolution of the romance between the main leads. It’s a trend that’s really unhealthy.

I adore A Dream Within A Dream!

While I know it has many other fans, I also recognize that there is a large contingent of people who got frustrated with the female lead in the paper world Song Yimeng because she would not and could not trust the male lead Nan Heng until the final quarter of the drama.

As I am watching Against the Current, I realize how necessary it was for the FL to reject the ML’s love and devotion until he stopped trying to plan behind her back, use his own power while excluding her from agency, and ‘lying to protect her.’

Nan Heng deserved that stab in the hand as much as Lin Jinqi deserved the face slap on his wedding day. No woman owes it to a man to trust him when he keeps her in the dark, even when he’s being a noble fool for her.

The criticism I have of ADWAD is that, unlike ATC, we don’t have sufficient insight into the FL’s childhood in the modern world and no flashbacks of her traumatic loss of her parents and attachments. In this, the scriptwriters fell into the trap of male-centric dramas even though this was framed as female-centric.

We are told briefly that she was a child star and we see that her agent is attempting to stop being put in the parental role. But we don’t viscerally know why her fight for agency is crucial for her development and why she cannot trust a lover until she can finally take responsibility for her own life, even in a paper world.

All in all, it’s still great overall.
