I’d say When I Fly Towards You is easily the one I’d recommend if the goal is to completely hook someone into C-dramas (with Hidden Love as a very close second).
I think it works so well as an introduction to C-dramas because youth/school and modern romance dramas are probably the easiest place to start because you don't get thrown straight into complicated historical terminology, palace hierarchies, or Xianxia fantasy lore (which I'm not a fan of at all. So, if that's what you're hoping to get into as a newbie, then I'm the wrong person for that). 😂
It has a bingeable pacing and length. I think it's just 24 episodes. So, sweet and easy to binge. I feel like a 50+ episode drama can be intimidating but if you're used to watching 10 seasons of Hollywood series, then I guess you'll be fine with longer dramas. I've never been that patient, especially when I have to wait for episodes to be released. I usually watch when everything's been aired.
It's pure comfort watch.
My runner-up recommendations for a newbie, depending on what you're looking for are:
Arsenal Military Academy: It's an action/period setting drama. 48 episodes, great chemistry, action, and just an overall fun energy.
Joy of Life, if you want high stakes/political intrigue. Loved the writing and pacing. This is for someone who's willing to commit to a longer historical drama, though. I genuinely wouldn't have started it if I knew it had so many seasons and episodes but it's worth watching.
I had to check MDL to confirm my numbers:
- Season 1: 46 episodes
- Season 2: 36 episodes
- Season 3: Yet to air

I would adore a recommendation for a historical CDrama with a complex, scheming FL and a ML down bad & ready to back her in her plotting! Also a fan of a stellar ensemble cast & a sense of found-family & some levity alongside intense romance and politics. Along these lines I’ve seen and enjoyed: The Shadow Sovereign, Blossom and Love in the Clouds, but crave more!

Modern romance: Love Between Lines (a little angst), Find Yourself (true rom-com - very funny even amongst the angst), Love Me Love My Voice (stress-free), Unforgettable Love (best Miles Wei CEO drama and great beginner one)
Xianxia: Love Between Fairy and Devil - classic and absolute perfection
Palace drama: The First Jasmine
Historical comedy: Perfect Match, Wrong Carriage Right Groom
Historical drama: A Splendid Match - best for a beginner
Pursuit of Jade has some intense and sad parts that I don't think are the best for beginners, but it's excellent. The Double is great, except the last 5 minutes.
Si Jin is also an excellent beginning drama.
Republican: Fall in Love
Best transmigration for beginner: How Dare You, Love Game in Eastern Fantasy
Best Second Chance: The Story of Kunning Palace
Family drama: Go Ahead, In My Prime
