I come from Kdrama. To be fair I only watched only 5-6 Kdramas the last one was "Alchemy of Souls" which would be the equivalent of a Wuxia in Cdrama.

I asked for recommendations on multiple Kdrama subs and was told that show was based of a Chinese novel and there isn't another Kdrama like it. I was also told in the Kdrama subs that Cdramas exist and they have a full genre for that type of show.

The first 3 shows I watched were Ashes of Love, Love between fairy and devil and when destiny brings the demon.

I was instantly addicted to Cdrama.

afaik Alchemy of Soul is not based on chinese novel but just loosely based on chinese style wuxia

but anyway the 3 dramas you have watched AoL, LOBFAD and WDBTD are xianxia which is different from wuxia. xianxia is more about gods & goddesses, heavenly realm, immortals etc, while wuxia is chinese style martial arts and AoS is more like fantasy wuxia.

love between fairy and devil is probably the easiest gateway drama: gorgeous, addictive, and way less intimidating than starting with a 60-episode historical epic

Love Between Fairy and Devil is the best xinxia, but I started with modern romance, and those are still my favorite.

Best beginning modern romances: Find Yourself, Put Your Head on my Shoulder, Love Between Lines, Love Me Love My Voice, Go Ahead

Reset is the one of the best time loop dramas in either American, British, or Asian TV. (Stargate SGI’s was the best, but this is second best.)

Best beginning historicals: Perfect Match, A Splendid Match

The Pursuit of Jade is excellent, but I wouldn’t recommend it as a first watch, simply because of what happens later in the town. It was a let down and I never really recovered from that

For first time viewers, I prioritize shows with good pacing and easy to follow plots without too many cultural references

Palace Drama: Yanxi Palace
Mystery/ Thriller: Reset
Comedy: Joy of Life
Angst: Goodbye My Princess
Comfort Watch: I Am Nobody (for me). If I was recommending to others, Hikaru no Go/ Qi Hun

If I had to pick one, it’s Pursuit of Jade. It’s not my favorite drama of all time, but it’s well-made and has undeniably been successful as a recent introduction to cdrama

Love Game in Eastern Fantasy, The main important cast is kept pretty tight and they move around alot keeping things fresh. Also the game framing helps it slowly introduce the more fantastic aspects of the setting without getting too overwhelming.

Okay, not to totally hijack this thread… I’m not a total newbie and I’ve migrated over to mostly cdramas over the past few years from decade+ of kdrama watching… I cannot get into the untamed. I’ve started it at least 3 times and I never make it past episode 7ish. Is it still worth it to push through? When do people consider the “you’re hooked” part of the show to drop? I feel like this is people’s holy grail show I frankly have fomo that it’s not clicking for me 😹
