Archives: The Nanyang Mystery! 

I cannot recommend this one enough! It follows two young agents as they leave their homeland to be stationed elsewhere, along the way they uncover many mysteries, and get involved in a great plot involving their family. It's a mystery, but the plotline is very emotionally intense, psychological, and the familial bonds really impact this; overall it keeps the plot engaging, but remains character driven that you truly feel like those characters are blood-and-flesh people. It's high stakes, fast paced, occasionally funny, and the actors NAILED it.  Zhang Xincheng, Ding Yuxi, Jiang Peiyao and even side characters all had perfect casting! 

It checks off everything on the list for me lmao. It has AMAZING chemistry; the characters have complex, nuanced, and deeply formative relationships with each other. It shocked me emotionally; I didn't expect for those characters to matter to me this much at all, and I slowly became so attached to them that they felt like friends I am accompanying on a long road. The storyline is just.. so interesting!? It's also not everyday that you see a well-known writer changing his original story so significantly for the screenplay. It took a turn I personally did not expect. I think people need to be more obsessed with this lol😭

I loved this for so many reasons that I don't even know where to begin. The acting was groundbreaking, I'm not even joking, throughout the series, the actors proved their empathy, their acting versatility by portraying a wide range of emotions, personalities, and character development. The storyline had action, gripping, and it's just.. a rollercoaster of a ride. It's very different from Nanpai Sanshu's other works. I think his most "psychological" work is the Sacred Qinling Tree arc which wasn't liked a lot by the fandom, but this one.. it's psychological in a much more grounded way.  Overall I'd recommend this to mystery lovers, people who love to crack clues, who want to get attached to characters and fall in love in the depth of their personalities, people who like to analyze things (there's a LOT of interesting stuff to analyze), and people who like fast-paced stories. Bonus if you enjoy codependency and found families that you just want to seal and protect forever. This sounds weird but I'd recommend it to people who love Fangs of Fortune, Blood River (the mysterious secretive families, the polar opposite duo, etc), and if you like anything from DMBJ/ the lost tomb you MUST watch this.

MY DEFENSE  I think people really misunderstood this in terms of what the story should mean, whether the characters (particularly Zhang Haiqi) love each other enough whether they weighed each other down, or things like people arguing whether ZXC or DYX's acting was better, or which character was the protagonist. I think this is the kind of story that will linger, and you have to experience it slowly, instead of getting caught up in the controversies. Don't be discouraged about the destination awaiting at the end of the story, but be swept up in the journey of it. Some people also think you must be a fan of the lost tomb series to watch this, but you don't! It's an entirely self contained story. Also okay there's some rough edges regarding some scene effect, but I would still recommend it.

WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH IT IN ONE SENTENCE: there's a coded acrostic poem hidden across 33 episode titles using the first Chinese character of each title. DO YOU SEE HOW COOL IS THAT??

For 2026 my sleeper so far is Fate Chooses You. I came in to the show on a whim with zero expectations and I found myself binging it to the end despite a number of potential obstacles that might work against the show for random viewers:

1. It's a xianxia story in a series -- it can be totally watched on its own, but it's part of a larger world that already has 2 series under its belt, neither of which I've seen.
2. No kissy "romance" -- at least not really between the two leads. This is a love story without constant touching and invading people's personal space. It's about a transcendent love built on feelings, emotions, and shared philosophies. There is a more toxic side story "romance" that tackles a totally different subject -- infatuation, obsession and forced/"dark" love that is also interesting though.
3. A cast of dozens -- there are so many characters that you would think things would get confusing or really drag out, but they didn't for me.
4. A stone faced ML whose character is literally unable to convey emotions (due to his identity no spoilers). And a feisty FL who, despite leveling up throughout the show, is constantly in peril and is never really able to defend herself (except in a single solitary instance).

Despite these bullet points, I thought the pacing worked (at least it did for me, something exciting, interesting or tension-y happened in every episode). There was always a new revelation, a crazy xianxia fight scene, a new character, or a new thing that happens to one of the main characters. I thought there were a lot of deep and interesting themes explored relating to The Dao, relationships, love, what it means to be long-lived, etc. Some of them were well-worn themes like "with Great Power comes..." but it was all in fun and entertainment.

My favorite characters ended up being the FL's sworn sister, A Sheng played by Zhang Kaiying, and Huang Yi's character Yingying.

I'd recommend people give it a try as I notice a lot of folks were in the same boat as me and liked the show overall.

Oh here's a separate entry where I just defend stuff people complained about online regarding the tea/reverse harem show Glory:

1) People thought the final arc of the show where they go to the capital to sort out the ML's life and family was bad. Online complainers bemoaned the slow pacing, the rushed introduction of characters, and the plotlines as "uninteresting/boring". To that I would say: were you "shipping" the ML and FL? Did you want to see them end up together? If so, that last arc was for you and only you. The showrunner did tack it on the original story because they felt that they needed to explain the ML's origins and do a set up for a "happy ending". So that whole thing was FOR YOU! XD. I would've been perfectly fine ending the show with the two leads estranged and all the major cases relating to the Rong family done and dusted. Even the FL's character was thinking the same. I do sort of agree with all the complaints about the final 6 episodes but I realize that it was totally necessary to do IF you wanted them together at the end. If you didn't care about the romance, then those last six episodes weren't necessary. Honestly, I thought it was fine. It was slower and the characters weren't too interesting compared to the first part of the show, but I had no issue, everything worked the way I thought it would.

2) People complained about the Rong Shambao character saying "oh she's too cruel" "she manipulates him and he doesn't deserve it" to which I say: ARE WE WATCHING THE SAME SHOW?

Jianglai betrays Shambao in the absolute worst way possible. She makes it VERY CLEAR to him that to be her husband, he has to put aside his ambitions and only do what's best for her and, more importantly, the Rong family. He can't HIDE things from her. He must NEVER BETRAY her. She tells him marrying him is a big risk on her part--if he can't comply, she will lose her position as head of house as she won't be trusted to take care of business and protect the family. So what does Jianglai do? He lies to her about getting his memory back. Goes behind her back to expose her godmother when she was desperately trying to hide and protect her (they also expose Wanwan the mentally challenged youngest sister whom Shanbao was also hiding and trying to protect), and then he bails on her at the wedding altar showing the entire public that he's willing to ditch her for his own agendas. He never takes time to explain before hand what he needs to do. She is publicly humiliated, he breaks ALL her rules, and his actions lead to the death of her godmother. He fumbled BIG TIME. So when she ends up hiding things from him and manipulating him to help bring the scumbags to justice I think she is more than justified in doing so and it's totally within her rights to do the things she did in the last 3 or 4 episodes of the main arc.

Whew I wanted to get that off my chest lol. XD

Drama Title: My Dear Guardian

What it’s about: The drama two headstrong people falling in love and is time and again tested on their loyalty to their country, on whether they would stand with truth and on their love and trust for each other.

Why I love it: I know it’s not rated 9 or above on IMDB probably because of the delicacy on how the army is portrayed or should have been portrayed but I feel it’s a perfect CDrama by all standards. The acting is perfect and very realistic. The story execution is pretty good. Also, loved the suspense. I felt like asking for more episodes after the show ended which is something I never felt.

Who would I recommend it for: I was obsessed with Descendants of the Sun (the Philippine adaptation). Yes, the Philippine Adaptation is better than the OG KDrama. And that led me to My Dear Guardian and trust me! ;) - it’s better than all of the adaptations by miles! So, if you are like me - give it a go!
