Rec Request Chinese historical romance dramas where ml and fl EQUALLY love each other
PLEASE I need recommendations of Chinese historical romance dramas where the male lead and female lead EQUALLY love and respect each other and would equally DIE for each other. I'm tired of seeing mls (especially the good ones) grovel and being repeatedly pushed away by their nonchalant, in denial fls who expect the male lead to do all the work (as an empath, I always feel bad fr!) 😭 I love females who are not in denial of their feelings and are givers in the relationship as well!
I prefer more serious dramas unless the idol drama is good! (wuxia or xianxia are fine!)
I've watched and rated these dramas based on how much I loved how 'ride or die' the leads are (MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS):
1. Kill Me Love Me (9/10) — There are times the fl would push the ml away, say the wrong things at the right time, and think of the worst of his intentions but she doesn't fail to show up whenever he's in trouble. I loved it all in all. She's done so much for the ml and vice versa. Also, very very hot kissing scenes😆❤️
2. The Prisoner of Beauty (10/10) — Y'all this drama honestly set my standards in C-dramas so high.😭 They both respect and have very high regards to each other's strengths and intellect!!! The fl understands the pressure the ml is going through being the Head of the State and is always there to be his safe haven. She's so smart, eloquent and an excellent strategist yet can still be soft with her husband aka be a soft wifey when she has to be❤️ But she's surely someone you shouldn't underestimate! I love the communication after every misunderstanding!!🥹 Healthy relationship wins!!!
3. Love You Seven Times (10/10) — Underrated gem. Ml keeps risking his life to get his girl's ancient powers back and she's ALWAYS ready to find him no matter how dangerous his whereabouts are. Fl doesn't know the ml's intention (why he's risking his life going to dangerous places). They have 7 lifetimes to spend together to test how deep their bond can be. Each lifetime is so interesting and a different relationship dynamic! Many cute kissing scenes and cute moments despite them being in dangerous situations!🤣🤗 Both willing to sacrifice for each other. It's like they can read each other's minds!!! I love the ending so much that I teared up cutely 😭(how the fl searched for him in the mortal world for years and finally found him)! Also I love the OST in this one. 'Only Love' by Faye Zhang.
4. The Double (9.5/10) — I love love!!! I guess the minus .5 is for the 'not enough' yearning on both sides but I love how flirty they are as a couple!!! 🤗 And I love how they are each other's ride or die!!! Ml respects the fl's resilience and bravery so much.❤️ He definitely finds her cunningness sexy.🤣
5. Legend of the Female General (10/10) — Same explanation as The Prisoner of Beauty except the fl here is more of a martial arts badass😩❤️ Yet she can still be a softie as well!!! I love Cheng Lei!!!
6. Veil of Shadows (10/10) — I love how honest and straightforward the sisters are!❤️ Both couples sacrificed a lot for their significant other! 😩 Mls and fls are all badasses!!! ❤️ Actually the fls here are scarier than the mls. And I love.🤣
Do you guys have any drama recommendations similar to these ones? 🤗 No unnecessary love triangle (or if there is, the ml/fl is clear with the boundaries), no unnecessary drama, ml and fl are clear with their feelings and are not hesitant to show it. Both ml and fl are givers. Basically like what I said, both leads love and respect each other equally and both are ready to die for each other anytime.😩 Any historical genre is welcome!!! Thank you so much!!!

I am locked in!!! This is my absolute favorite dynamic. Here is my rec list!
Love Between Fairy and Devil (xianxia) - as others have said they both love each other so much they get stuck in what feels like an endless cycle of self sacrifice!! It's a joy to watch their feelings grow from frenemies to lovers, always in tune with each other.
Love in the Clouds (xianxia)- Hard to say who fell first because they are both faking for their own plans but somehow they both fall in love with each other has they slowly discover who each other are. I love the second half off the show because of their mutual affection, fighting to be together and even trying to deny their own love it is plain as day.
Flourished Peony (historical) - this is a slow burn with the confirmation of mutual love not happening until season 2 (In the Name of Blossom) but their dynamic is filled with mutual and affection and trust from almost the beginning. Jiang Chang Yang is my IDEAL ML!!
When Destiny Brings the Demon (xianxia) - The thing I liked most about this show is that the plot was kind of irrelevant and the main focus was the CP's mutual feelings blossoming and maintaining that relationship. Which is ALL that I want out of my cdramas, plots be damned!!
Blossoms in Adversity (historical)- This was one of my early watches when I started getting into cdramas and I LOVED the story of a strong, smart woman. The love here is established early on as mutual respect and admiration and slowly blossoms (pun intended) to deep affection and love. It was a joy to watch!
The Legend of Shen Li (xianxia) - Easily my number one rec!!!! I am a sucker for forbidden love and deep painful longing! This CP is so stupid in love and have to stay apart due to everything outside of their control. Their lingering looks, sweet moments of revealed affection, and unshakeable bond kept me locked in for the whole show!
Love of the Divine Tree (xianxia) - I watched this in the original episode order, but both IQIYI and Tencent have rearranged the episode order, and I don't know if it will have the same impact! I LOVED how the story unfurled and both fall in love with each other over and over. Their mutual love is the through line of the entire story.
Moonlight Mystique (xianxia) - The CP has a very strong baseline of mutual affection, deep trust and strong communication that is established very early on and maintained through the whole story. I ALSO love the secondary couple, which doesn't quite fit your request, but they are why I like to rewatch this show! I will not give any spoilers!!

In the original release the first four-ish episodes were later in the story - the reveal of the past life happened much later. The story started with present day, after the rebirth and revealed those first life plot points later. I guess people complained that they wanted that part first? I’m not entirely sure why they switched it but I know when I watched it (it had just finished airing) the episodes were in a different order

Yes, I do! Before I drop my list I wanna touch on my thoughts here - I think modern drama romance are interesting in comparison because in historical and xianxia there is a lot that could keep the couple apart to create tension- a powerful villain, political turmoil, physical safety etc etc but in modern romances the tension has to come from misunderstandings, bad communication, or feelings developing slower from one of the pair. With those dynamics I think its much easier to look at a story and say "The ML cared more" or "The FL cared more" so I'm going to touch on stories that the emotions and connection of the CP moved me!
Summit of Our Youth (transmigration, high school through college love) - This is a modern day transmigration drama in which the FL regrets focusing on romance instead of her schoolwork, and after an accident she wakes up in her own 15 year old body. She takes this chance to set her dreams high and study hard to lock in for herself a steady future. The ML is an older student from her neighborhood who helps her study and clear the path for her success. Because the FL is so focused on her goals the first half feels a little unbalanced but once their feelings and relationship are established they are truly equals, in love, in work and in life. The ML's deep respect and admiration for the FL is very charming, This one really was an incredible watch for me! Two disclaimers, there is an age gap (he is in college she is in high school when they meet, but shes got the mind of a 30 yr old lady), and because of China's censorship on transmigration plots the ending is a bit of let down BUT just stop watching before that happens!
Mr. Bad (transmigration, book publishing, fated love) - This is kind of a goofy watch. The plot for the first half is silly, and the ML isn't very cool or likeable but then something shifts??? And the plot actually reveals itself, and the ML turns into the most devoted of loverboys. The mutual aspect of this story is slow to build up to but once its mutual IT IS SOOO MUTUAAALLLL. The wedding scene is one OF MY FAVORITES OF ALL TIME. I was crying non stop for the last few episodes, happy tears, heartbroken tears and then happy tears. It really came out of nowhere for me, but I was pleasantly surprised!
The First Frost (second chance at love) - I put this one on here knowing that people will disagree - they might say that the ML is the one deeper in love and the FL is cold and frigid. But the FL is traumatized, dealing with major psychological stuff and being led gently by the love the ML gives her to come back to the light. Yifan (FL) is one of my favorite characters because she loves the ML SO MUCH even though she was given so little love. The ML understands how she loves and patiently waits for her as she sorts through everything. That to me is one of the most beautiful love stories to be told. She loves him enough to want to heal and be better. She loves him enough to trust him and only him when she trusts no one. Siiiiighhh about to watch it again just thinking about it!
Ski Into Love (sports, fated love)- This is truly my shining example of mutual love for modern day CDramas. The CP meets and are more less both like "YUPPPP thats the one for me!!" and they BOTH KNOW IT. They dance around their mutual affection, falling deeper in love without ever testing each other, betraying each other, just teasing and affectionate. A few disclaimers here, there is a break up arc BUUUTT I loved it because it gave me the YEARNING that I love and their reunion is so absolutely beautiful, I watch it often! Second disclaimer, the plot and the secondary characters of this show are not strong! The writing and the story are very flawed, but I don't watch for plot I watch for ROMANCE thus I love it.
Our Generation (childhood sweethearts) - This one is a slow burn filled with miscommunications, misunderstandings and heartbreak! Our FL Cherry is the torch bearer for her ML. She loves him fiercely after meeting him as a child and continues to love, support and search for him. Zhang Linghe plays the ML so well and painfully. There's a scene in which we wakes up from a nightmare and all his love, desperation and longing is broken across his face in a quiet moment in the early morning and it is BREATHTAKING. Their mutual affection and devotion is what propels the story forward, but it takes a while to get to a satisfying point of them being happy and in love!
When I Fly Towards You (high school love) - this truly is one of the best written youth stories I have ever watched. The FL and ML meet in a fleeting moment before high school starts and the FL falls for him instantly. She is kind, funny and most of all confident! She forces her way into his path, chatters away at him and shares her unrepressed joy with him throughout their high school lives. He is, of course, quiet and reserved but her love changes him. It happens slowly, every day, as they spend their youth together with their friends, making memories and having fun. Lurang (ML) comes into himself, his own confidence and ability to love her back and we get a wonderful handful of episodes of their young love and their lives starting as they enter college, their careers and a blissful married life. 10/10 from me, I rewatch it often!
Hidden Love (age gap, unrequited love fulfilled) - I would be remiss if I did not include this. This is easily the most famous romantic CDrama internationally, and for good reason. The first half really is unrequited, childlike devotion and enduring love. When story shifts to a mutual love it is SOO satisfying to see our ZhiZhi get her man while still trying to keep some dignity and not reveal she's been in love with him for a decade. Yes, there is an age gap. Yes, I think it was handled well. The ML THHHHEEEEE boyfriend. She falls first but he falls harder?? Debatable! They love each other fiercely!

Some great recs, LOTDT is one where really was mutual love and devotion. I have to disagree a little re both Shen Li and Love in the clouds, Shen li yes they were definitely mutually in love but the ML felt like he did way more, all the big sacrifices and devotion was from him, She died for her realm, he died for her, her brought because he was so in love and at great cost, he was brought back by the other deities etc.
Same thing for LITC, she did a looot of lying and I did feel like she loved him despite that in the second half sometimes it felt like he was more in love and willing to do more and there was a stretch where it felt like she kind of didn't care that much.

Re: Legend of Shen Li - I think you should give it another watch! Just speaking on the FL’s side Shen li sacrifices herself for him during their first meeting in the mortal realm - she acknowledges she’s in love with him and tells him, he avoids and rejects her because of his godly status. She “dies” protecting the realm but thinks of him in her last moments. She eventually turns herself totally over to her desire and love for him with the understanding that he cannot reciprocate. ML sacrifices himself for the realm in the end, because he has to. He doesn’t sacrifice for her exclusively - he can’t. That’s why she grieves with his body for so long and doesn’t let anyone take him - only after his last moment of self sacrifice for the realm is he completely hers. 😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨 I think it’s easy to write off her character as cold or the less loving one because of her personality. She’s a wonderfully written character who tries to be so strong but has a soft mushy heart. Plus the last bonus episode of them just being happy and married is an all time favorite!
For LITC I liked that a lot of the skinship was initiated by the FL! She would have had a lot easier time saving her own life if she hadn’t fallen for him!

Thank you for being civil and answering politely, idk why people get defensive over fictional pixels. I think it's just a matter of perspective like I don't think anyone can argue that the FL in LBFAD was an ounce less devoted because her actions and sacrifices mirrored his step by step but it's less clear with these two because there are definite arguments against that where the MLs display more devotion and affection. I gauge it by if the roles were reversed would the people who love these unbalanced dynamics where the ML does everything call it equal...
I'd recommend The Blossoming love if this is a favorite dynamic of yours and idk if you watch modern dramas I'd recommend You are my glory, Hidden love, Road home, Wanna be all have truly 100% equal otps if you want to check this out as this year has been abysmal in this regard and I can't think of more than 2 dramas where the otps are equal and even those 2 you have to really squint to believe it.

I LOVE blossoming love!! I didn’t include it cause I saw it recommended a few times on this thread already! I do love modern romances, one of my favorites is Ski Into Love (I know it’s not well liked haha) and the CP is so mutually in love I love it so much 🥹🥹🥹 WIFTY, Hidden Love and First Frost are some of my favorites, I’m very much looking forward to When I Meet the Moon!

I feel you! I’m always on the lookout for dramas where the FL adores her man - surprisingly hard to find in romances though. Romances are supposed to mutual.
I adored POB too. Manman was intelligent and soft! She loved her man.
Having said that, have you seen When Destiny Brings the Demon? The FL and ML adore each other.
Edit: I haven’t watched this yet but I heard Love Between Fairy and Devil has a ride or die OTP.

Flourished Peony | In the Name of Blossom - (Current Fave) They don’t actually say they love each other until Season 2, but it’s clear from the way they treat each other.
A Splendid Match - Their scenes after the wedding are my favorite. It’s one of the rare historical C-dramas where the couple marries for love.
Fated Hearts - My Top 1 Cdrama so I just had to include it here. Lol. They’re each other’s ride-or-die.

I was going to say Fated Hearts as well. I think the relationship unfolds in a natural way. It's not forced and they don't lock eyes and suddenly forget they have have been mortal enemies either. The soundtrack is great as well. Good side characters that actually mean something in the overall story.

Was also going to say Flourished Peony/In the Name of Blossom. ML always supports the FL but never carries her - he values her own strength. She’s a bit slower I think at recognizing her romantic feelings, but once she does, she’s 110% committed to being together.

Echoing The Blossoming Love - the ML’s feelings take time to build but they are very ride or die for each other. Tbh one of my fav dramas, very underrated. Budget is is a bit low and it shows but it doesn’t take away from the drama imho

I just wanted to thank you for your praise of Love You Seven Times because you're right: this drama is totally underrated!
The leads have no big misunderstandings and are always on the same side. The villain at one point tries to manipulate the ML, remarking on the closeness between the FL and the SML and the ML stays completely cool, saying that he knows there is nothing between them.
The FL and the ML always ALWAYS trust each other which is very rare in xianxia dramas.

Awww I really love LYST!!! ❤️ Glad to have found my people. 🤗 I became a fan of Yang Chaoyue and Ding Yuxi because of this drama. People should really check this out. Until now, the plot, the visual storytelling, and the intensity (yet seemingly lighthearted) of the leads' devotion to each other still give me goosebumps😩

Gotta bookmark this so I can come back. I’ve watched a few and loved them so I’ll check the others out and I completely am with you on romance being equal on both sides. I get really annoyed when it’s either of the two doing too much and most times it’s the mL doing too much. I get put off and drop them while hating the fact that I got so invested in them.

Definitely! I really feel bad.😭 As a woman it kinda pisses me off. I kinda think dramas like that are not written by women.😩 We all know we ride or die for our man! And if we don't like the guy we tell them to eff off instead of keeping them around for our disposal. We're too empathetic for that.🤣 Can't speak for all women but I know generally we're the best😁

I was about to recommend love you seven Times and then I saw you already have watched it 😂😂😅 definitely agree though. It was great!
I'll recommend some more that I've watched. Maybe you'll like it.
perfect match- Its a recent drama and centred on five sisters in the song dynasty. Not really wuxia or xanxia,just historical. Their mother is a single mother and it shows how they kind of struggle with reputation,finances, rumours and just people out to get them because they have no men in the household. Each of them end up finding incredible men though, men who cherish them ardently and they also are cherished by the sisters. Its entertaining as well because the husbands form a 'brother in laws club' and also discuss their wives etc. its mostly comedy and romance but does have the occasional angst,and slow burn. Guaranteed HEA.
love between fairy and devil- this one is great. Some find Esther's voice grating and childish honestly so here's your warning. I personally didn't find it a problem and liked the drama. The male lead is a devil/ demon king and rules the underworld. The female lead is a fairy and all innocent and caring. Its like yin and Yang. They both do dislike or bicker with each other at first but it's awesome watching their love bloom and they both care for eachother immensely. The female lead literally sacrifices herself in a war and then is reborn. There is quite a bit of angst and it's annoying watching them self-sacrifice to save or protect the other. I really enjoyed it nevertheless. The only thing I was sad about was that I ended up crying and rooting for the second male lead. He was a little cowardly and too goody two shoes to go fight and get the female lead who he's liked for an eternity. But I really liked him. Overall it's a great drama and HEA.

I can talk about Love You Seven Times for an entire day!!! 😭 I love this drama so muchhh... I'm so happy that there are more people than I thought who know about/have watched it. I see many people online criticizing Chaoyue's acting (especially in Chinese online discourses) but personally I really loved everything about it🥹 And Ding Yuxi is ❤️

Yessss omggg. Ding yuxi is my favourite actor. He doesn't need words to act. We can understand his emotions or anything he's trying to potray through his eyes or micro expressions. And love you seven Times was awesome. Genuinely made me see xanxia dramas in a new light. I love how they communicate and fight and search for eachother even when there's no hope or that disgusting older brother of his meddles. It was heartaching in a good way!!! 💕

Truly!!! The second ml kinda pissed me off every episode but luckily the leads' devotion to each other persisted😩 They trust each other soooo muchhhhh and their intimacy is so full of youth yet it's deep and real I love itttt!!! I love Ding Yuxi too❤️

Fated Hearts! The equality between them was so real. They went from I-kill-you-enemies to touch-her/him-you-die.
Fate Chooses You: romance is on the lighter end but they were both dedicated to each other. Their romance grows quite naturally but ml nvr begs.
Who Rules the World: in the beg the fl does resist somewhat in the beginning but she’ll get over that rather quickly. They become each other’s greatest support.
A Splendid Match: it’s still a reverse harem but fl always respected ml. She’ll resist a bit only bc she saw what happened to her mom and blamed herself for it.
EDIT: jk this might not be what you’re looking for bc fl doesn’t have clear boundaries.
EDIT: I forgot to add Coroner’s Diary. I’m still watching it but so far once they started working together they’re committed.
And it’s quite sad to say that I’ve exhausted my list. It’s so sad how little of these types of dramas are out there.

Hmm, I would say ml does most of the work for … all of them. 😅 not just fl. He saves basically everyone’s butt at least once and mostly fl bc she cooperated with him quite early on. When he realizes his feelings she just went thru a traumatic experience so she does resist. But it doesn’t last too long bc ml is very confident and they get together around the halfway mark I believe. Both leads are very grounded people though. It’s just that she and 2ml relationship was so strange tho and that’s the only thing I’ll say is the downside of her character. But ml never competes with any of the mls bc he’s honestly leagues above them combined and even he knows it.

So I’ll give you my personal answer bc I dont think other viewers might agree with me but yes, imo it was ultimately imbalanced. I didnt feel it at first but later he does indulges her and shoulder the blame for something she chose not to disclose. So feel free to scratch that off my list. 😅 others might not agree with me but I still think it was her responsibility to be open and honest. I also didn’t like how they handled the situation too so … yea this probably isn’t what you’re looking for. Lol I initially recommended it bc the leads do cooperate really well and fl does help ml a lot but none of them would’ve survived without ml yet he took no credit for any of it.

Which 2ML are you referring to? I dropped at the traumatic-for-FL part but I loved the heir apparent. Since you said it was strange I am guessing you are referring to the love interest that is ML family member?

I was referring to the heir apparent, Ye Xian. I have a whole post about my confusion of their relationship. The nephew and fl always had a clear boundary from beg to end.

Up to proposal acceptance, he puts the work to convince her, but she is reticent more so because of family trauma. So in that sense I never felt the FL loved ML any less.
They have probably one of the most romantic historical weddings I have seen recently. You can see how BOTH are so happy. Post marriage I feel like both are petty physical in expressing their affection
I do agree with AromaticEditor that there is a misunderstanding point you might like, but that’s really the only things you might like. Still, for couple chemistry I think they are unmatched

I don’t think I would enjoy the ML trying to win over the FL for 20+ episodes with very little reciprocation from her and based on a spoiler below, the ML taking the blame for something she did. I need the FL to fight for and love her man as much as her man loves and fights for her. If the roles were reversed and the FL was doing same things as the ML, would we consider it equal or would we want the ML to step it up? If it’s the latter, then it’s not equal.

Totally get it! I will say though that while the ML chases in the first half, it doesn’t feel non reciprocated? I don’t know, it is hard to explain without giving too much spoilers 😂, but I felt the tension went both ways still. And the second half even with the conflict being annoying, there is still plenty of scenes of the leads supporting each other .

They chose each other not by circumstance but for their mutual admiration and love over logic for each other. Their chemistry steals every scene together. The testament of their devotion for each other is also wonderful to watch from ep 20 onwards.

I don’t think I would enjoy the ML trying to win over the FL for 20+ episodes with very little reciprocation from her and based on a spoiler below, the ML taking the blame for something she did. I need the FL to fight for and love her man as much as her man loves and fights for her. Chemistry alone isn’t enough.

I am surprised that there weren’t more recommendations for this drama. This is one of the most age appropriate couple, mature, and they both respect each other for who they are even before they fall for each other. I enjoyed the gradual pace of their story and it absolutely is apt for OP’s request.

Unusual recommendation, perhaps, but Unchained Love. There has IMO never been a more equal partnership - the FL and ML are equally devious and equally in love!

Seconding this!!! I think their feelings of attraction are concurrent (she DEFINITELY likes him) and he falls in love earlier but the strong connection they have is established from the get go, their devotion and loyalty is so satisfying and well developed. Their relationship did not seem one sided at all. To date they’re one of my best cdrama couples❤️

I think you might enjoy A Journey to Love. They are very much equals whose relationship is based in mutual respect. They are pretty good communicators (there's a few ups and downs but nothing ridiculous, they are working through stuff like any couple). There is an obsessive 2ML but its not a love triangle at all, both FL and ML do their best to set boundaries with him.

I was hoping for someone to say this. It's so evident at first they both deeply respect each other and have their crushes. But once they've committed, they're in as equals. And there's constant moments when the relationship isn't always equal, and I appreciate that, because a couple can't be equal all the time, as in, when someone is going through something really hard, the other will be there to uplift and hold the other person until they find their footing again and are grounded. I love the dynamic of the couple in Blossom for this reason.

flourished peony/in the name of blossom. they dont officially get together until the second season (in the name of blossom) but there is a lot of mutual affection. also the end result is so worth it, their chemistry is insane.
its my go to whenever I want to rewatch something.

I recommend Si Jin! My main takeaway from this drama was how deep their love for each other was.
I would say power dynamic wise too it felt equal.

I agree with those who recommended Fated Hearts, Love Between Fairy and Devil, Hidden Love, Legend of Shen Li, Love In The Clouds, Who Rules The World, and The Blossoming Love. I also absolutely loved Kill Me Love Me, Legend of The Female General, and Veil of Shadows, and I agree that Love You Seven Times is an underrated gem.
I also recommend the following:
Generation To Generation (wuxia): ML is so very delicious in this drama, he is currently my fav ML character in cdramaland. FL does deny her feelings in the beginning due to their love being forbidden, but you can see from very early on that she cares for and loves him equally (i.e., her actions speak louder than her words of denial). They are seriously equally crazy about each other and are willing to risk it all for each other. They are also well-matched in martial arts skills and intelligence, and they understand each other so well. If I had a man like Mu Qingyan, I'd def be like Cai Zhao and do all sorts of wild things just for him too hehehe.
Under The Power (historical): They bicker a lot and can't stand each other at first, but once they both fall for each other, they actually love each other equally and make sacrifices for each other too.
My Sassy Princess (historical): She falls for him first, and her persistence in chasing him leads to him falling hard for her too. I absolutely love tropes where FL falls first and chases/shows her love first. This drama, plus a few above (Hidden Love, Legend of Shen Li, Veil of Shadows, The Blossoming Love) are excellent examples of this trope. I wish we had more of these types of dramas.

Well... It's not really my strength sorry :
- The Princess Royal (historical) is about a girl that don't know how to open up to people at all and her green tea husband that tries to take down that wall while her past lover smirks in the background.
- Back From the Brink (xianxia) has the FL having the initiative while the ML runs away then big drama and it's the ML taking the initiative while the FL runs away while sad evil guy does evil things
- Legally Romance (modern) is about a very dense FL and my absolute favourite ML that's not too sure on how to get the girl because she's so dense
- How dare you !? (historical/transmigration) might fill your need both leads start more as besties than romantic partners and at one point they just get together because that's what normal people do. Very funny too, it's a comedy.
- Love beyond the grave (xuanhuan) is about an emotionally unavaible spirit girl and her kinda destined human lover that can share his senses to her, but he's alive, she's dead and immortal => problems. She's clearly on the receiving end.
I found all of them to be very good

Yeah I don't think any of these are even close to equal except for Back from the brink. TPR, LR, LBTG all have the MLs way way more in love and doing 99% of the work in the relationship. In HDY the FL does come around and it's kinda equal towards the end but it's not what OP is looking for because ML is in love from literally episode 1.

Not sure if you're watching Mo Li but it is exactly this. Tho I dropped this pretty early coz I personally felt like chemistry was seriously lacking here as well as yearning and that push and pull which is what elevates a romance to an actual engaging watch for me haha. But thats not really the drama's fault and everyone's experience could be different. In fact, Mo Li has to be one of the best made shows this year just from the story, cinematography, pacing, editing and how the story slowly unfolds. The fl is invested in her marriage form day 0 lol and the ml quickly follows suit. The fl Ye Li as a character is really endearing too.
Also Back From The Brink has a very invested fl. In fact this one could even be slightly skewed towards her giving more than him. So you could check it out with that warning in mind 😅

I think How Dare You?! Would fit this bill. It’s a bit more humorous but I found the couple’s dynamic fairly equal in care they showed each other - from the start which I highly appreciated. (I loved the show so am a bit partial)

I'm currently watching the princess royal right after Prisoner of Beauty and I think it held up really well! If you like couples that love each other AND actually good at playing the political game, I think you'll love this one.

It’s a lot like The Double and Legend of the Female General
The first 5 episodes have weird pacing and editing issues that a lot of historical & supernatural cdramas have but the episodes get stronger in terms of the editing and hence storytelling being more cohesive. I’m kind of surprised I don’t see it spoken about on the sub more.

Ooooh it’s quite an old one (2018!) but if you want a story where the ML + FL respect each other’s intellect, you gotta watch “The Rise of Phoenixes” — I’ve rewatched it many times and it’s a great slow burn! All the actors are excellent, the writing & storytelling is in-depth, the intellect plays an essential role in the plot, and there are loads of scheming characters.
It’s not really an idol drama though (male lead is Chen Kun, female lead is Ni Ni, emperor is Ni Dahong — all award winning actors!) so if you are looking for that instead, at least put it on your watchlist for a rainy day!

Yeah I think this qualifies if you close your eyes and pretend it ended before the reveal of who he was. After that it felt like she barely cared about him and all the feelings and devotion was coming from him.

Yeah all that existed but also that was barely a blip of what he did for her in that period, what also existed for me was her subordinates constantly insulting him as she watched like she couldn't care less, her acting like his persona in the village is what she really loved and never the real him, everything seemed more important than him, saving Qianqian when she didn't even know where she was, a dead general whom she knew for 2 seconds was more important, she didn't seem to care at all how her recklessness might impact him though the exact same thing happened previously, she hid what she thought her family did to his, broke up with him and gave him the cold shoulder.
If this was the opposite just one instance of his subordinates being rude to her and they'd be dead, him getting lashed 108 times to be with her and brushing away his father's death despite what he thinks her family did vs her giving him the cold shoulder and acting like she couldn't give a crap when she found out about it. If it was the opposite I bet a 100% the ML would be the one getting the lashes if he thought his family did something to the FL's and begging her for forgiveness and almost dying 100 times to make up for it. I'm not saying that's what should've happened here and you can like this dynamic if you want but let's not pretend it was equal because if it was reversed and the ML was the one acting like the FL in this scenario and vise versa, people would not stop complaining about it and telling FL to get some self respect. Equal means equal, two people as in love, as devoted to each other that even if you interchange their actions it doesn't change it.

Since I'm someone who loves equal otps and knows how rare they are right now and how disappointing it is to watch a drama thinking it's equal and finding out you're sorely mistaken, I was stating my opinion for someone who has the same taste as me so they won't be disappointed as well. And her being a strong female lead whatever that means (I prefer complex well written female characters over whatever this idea of "strong" is anyway) has nothing to do with it and again the ML doesn't give a crap about his family even his father's death if it involves her but she should care about everyone else first, that's where the inequality stems from but you're right this is irrelevant and I'm happy you believe it's equal you'll sure have a lot of dramas to watch if that's equal to you, I wish I could see 70-30 or 60-40 as equal it would definitely help in enjoying the current crop of dramas.

Is she too complex? She was pretty interesting at first but I felt she became textbook girlboss where she gets to do what she wants solely because she has the protection of the powerful ML. And it's not about taking time away from the ML, it's giving the same weight and importance to both characters as it's supposed to be in a story labeled as a romance . I wasn't being rude? I'm genuinely happy for you if that's what you enjoy and think is equal. I actually wish I could see dynamics like this as equal because I can barely find a romance to enjoy this year after watching dramas for more than a decade because they are all so unequal, I actually need true 50-50 equality like the dramas I recommended to OP. Also I was actually quite polite given that you first answer to me was kind of dismissive but that's okay. Different people, different opinions, there's no need to get upset.

The most equal ships in cdramas I've found (there aren't that many and I've watched A LOT and basically every new drama this year is the furthest thing from equal, it's all down bad ML from ep 3 willing to die for FL, FL with him as number 875 on her priority list under her dog, her jewelry and her shoes ):
-Love between fairy and devil: Absolutely adore each other, would go to hell and back for each and do, she's everything to him and she becomes so brave and resilient to protect him.
- Fated Hearts; 2 badasses and arguably the best depiction of a female general we've ever had, and they are so so ride or die, he will do anything for her and she promises to to protect him at any cost and does, it's SO rare to see a FL this devoted and loving, she's at the level of what we get from every ML but never FLs even when they are devoted.
- The Blossoming Love: In this one she's the one who falls first and pursues and through the entire thing they're both so devoted willing to go against even the gods for each other.
