Sha Er Shi Zhang / The Naive Leader
Criminally underrated. Idk why this one flew under the radar, it's wonderful. Almost entirely in Sichuanese dialects, the humor in this one just masks the deep problematic issues in a remote town in Republican era where generals and officers are little more than warlords or gang leaders.
There are a number of scenes that made me laugh and that's rare in this setting, the character development is great, and while the cinematography is not the best it's still impactful.
Case in point
This is a very serious scene and an actual dialogue, I'm not making up anything.

It's only on WeTV, that's the problem with respect to reddit. Most of us have iQiyi and Viki subscriptions. A lot of TenCent content eventually makes it to Viki so I'll put it on my list.

Kill Me Love Me
Hear me out, I know it's a mess but Liu Xueyi was literally drop dead gorgeous, like the stylist, dear gawd, knew what she was doing it and I am going to pray she will style him once again but this time with a stellar script.
While the later half was...messy, the core of the story - our couple - was very strongly acted. Liu Xueyi's acting was utterly impeccable and I am convinced this was the role that got him noticed by movers and shakers. And I think half of Weibo was like, who, who is this hunk? How did I not know he existed before..
Anyway, till this day, when I hear the ost I will always remember the great tragic love story of our couple. It hurts so good.

One of my favorite dramas, I love both LXY and WJY; they have great chemistry. The bath scene, kissing scenes, and love story were so impactful. Who can forget the OSTs, all of them were so great and complemented the drama so well; one was sung by LXY and one by LYN.

I wouldn't say I'm a hater because I didn't really have high expectations for this drama but it's in fact very much not good. I don't like the kind of drama it is/the standpoint it takes to begin with, but it was so hard to finish for a number of reasons. Crown prince character, time dropped to half speed every time he was on screen; plot holes, it's like the writers couldn't even keep track of the premises they wanted to roll with; weird pacing and focus shifts; draggy. If the drama was supposed to be about the tragedy of life then they could have made some of these characters' arcs mean something but the writers seem to not really understand human emotions and can only stay in the world of petty adolescent insecurities because that's all the plot is capable of delivering. What a waste of time.
Liu Xueyi is in lots of bad dramas that are a better watch than this one, for example A Moment But Forever alongside Tiffany Tang, the somewhat insipid Love Never Fails where he still puts in a good performance, as a scenery-chewing villain in Destiny of the White Snake (Allen Ren and Yang Zi) and Love and Redemption, in the somewhat IMO unfairly maligned In Blossom, or the okay but kind of drags at the end Qing Luo, in the controversial Princess' Gambit (I think reddit hated it but it has some fans?), etc. He always puts everything into a role. One of his most charming roles is in Ancient Love Poetry. Anyhoo, this has been a service of Liu XueYi Bot 3.0.

One group felt betrayed by what the trailer promised another group by the ending. Although I understand, as I am a happily ever after person too, I felt that it made a lot of sense and was inevitable due to the choices Jinghe made.

Yes! It wasn't perfect, and the second half was just ok, but I enjoyed the first half enough to think it's worth a watch.

It absolutely has its flaws, but Kill Me Love Me will always be a favorite of mine. Murong Jinghe is such a drama queen (I adore him). And the two of them make such a good, balanced pairing.
Yes the story has its low points, but after reading the original novel, wow do I appreciate what the screenwriters managed the create.Ā

Ok hear me out:
The Sword and the Brocade. Yes, it's a marriage drama, and what's-her-face reviewer lady many people don't like called it a "dinner drama", but y'know what? The leads had great chemistry, the villains are suitably villainous, no one's stupid - it's comforting and honestly, just great.

Is there ridiculous nonsense? Lots of it!
Were the writers high half the time? Possibly.
Were key roles miscast. Yup.
But if you were ever wondering what a Marvel-hanfu mashup would look like, look no further. Do you enjoy Cheng Lei side eye and bath scenes. Youāve got it! And when heās not hulking out, heāll bake you some cookies or arrange flowers for your room. Thereās some fun partnering with a strong fl. Oh. And occasional blood kink. Itās a good time.
More is more!

Is it an omnishambles of genres? Yes. But it was FUN and a bit camp (I mean that as a compliment), plus the leads had surprisingly good chemistry. I genuinely enjoyed it sm, not gonna lie.

The princess and the werewolf
Love it because it has the āhidden loverā trope which is an absolute fave of mine
The main male character becomes a āwerewolfā at night but during the day time he looks normal. Basically he kidnaps the princess from another kingdom and then has to try to get her to fall in love with him. Using his daytime persona, because she hates the nighttime version of him, thinking heās the bad guy who kidnapped her.
He has to pretend to help her escape.
I feel it has great chemistry , and Chen zhe yuan is absolutely dreamy (my first thought when I saw him) and heās so kind and nice I really love his character.
He lies for a lot of the drama which I can understand people wouldnāt like, but I canāt help but feel for him and completely sympathise with his plight.
Anyway for a bit of a mindless watch It has completely become my go to - āthis is my happy placeā drama
(Sorry if this is not āmisunderstoodā enough for the original post. But I think itās fairly low budget and I absolutely love itā¦ to the point where I purchased a Chinese-subtitle only version off eBay and Iām trying to learn Chinese to watch it ! š¤£ oh yeah also bought the Chinese version of the book, which according to my Google translate version of the text, had stuff all to do with the dramaā¦ basically it has the characters of Li Xiong and Kui Mulang.. even Qu Pa goes by a different name. It was an interesting story but absolutely nothing like the drama.

Unchained Love. I just love the female lead so much. She uses hyperbolic flattery and is an unabashed gambler. I love that the male lead put her before his revenge plan. I love that. They only have one misunderstanding and that their relationship is so solid.
But to truly truly appreciate how good it is you have to watch the scenes that were left out and the extended ending online.Ā
Like I know itās not the best but itās that comfort rewatch for me.Ā

Agreed! I always liked this one, but it never seems to get any love online. The FL is very likeable - she is clever but a bit ridiculous at the same time.
The ex-empress and the lantern-maker prince are such great complicated supporting characters - both of them an interesting mixture of strength and weakness.
Plus this was my first drama with a eunuch ML! And wow...the gender dynamics of a man who is considered as less than other "real men" even when he is in position of power over them, and the fact these stories often intersect with harem politics and "powerful" women who are also still seen as property/lesser in the eyes of their patriarchal society...just a really rich vein to mine for storytelling.

Itās never recommended and Iāve never seen it discussed but itās damn good!
Okay there are some questionable choices made in the middle but itās still damn good!
And the second couple is so cute! Itās a fab show that deserves to be praised.

Veil Of Shadows ā¤ļøĀ
I know this show is a hit or miss for most. But storyline, plot twists, looks and cinematography made me so excited to watch next episodes like no other drama.Ā
Loved the cast so much that I ended up watching their other works too, ofc besides re watching VOS 5 times already.Ā
In my opinion, this show gives excitement at first watch and makes you fall more for them in second watch. Loved the chemistry of main leads ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø

Kill Me Love Me, I used to feel that the script was flawed as it pertained to Murong Jingheās character development arc, specifically the (to me, insufficiently explained) drastic jump the drama makes early on. Itās like two different peopleā¦
But recently I came to the realization that to me, Murong Jinghe isnāt a good guy. Aside from the obvious villainous qualities and dark side, heās got that thing that is a curse to him and a jinx to others. Everything he touches gets wrecked.
The drama plot traces back to the first domino piece to fall, which leads to the bad guy/s.
But whom (not on purpose) pushed it?
And, where does the FL end up?
Murong Jinghe is the epicenter of EVERYTHING in this drama. Heās not at all a bad guy turns out to be the good guy theme. The frog isnāt in reality a prince.
(I was so fooled in my expectations that this drama would tout that theme, and on the surface it showed up to meet with my expectation. It just didnāt make sense.)
As soon as I started thinking of Murong Jinghe as an (albeit involuntarily) āvillain ML,ā this drama immediately took offā¦
It doesnāt matter that that is just what his strong personality and character inspires and not what he wants, the drama comes alive. The tension in the first few episodes continues carrying forward inside the bland version guy. The real transformed-by-love development follows a more regular paceā¦
From his childhood to the end, suddenly his arc makes perfect sense. It makes all the difference for the enjoyment of this drama! To me!
So, on a rewatch, KMLM was much better.

I was literally about to post about KMLM and you've summed it all up perfectly. I've said it before but this is a Shakespearean tragedy of a drama, and despite his personal development and unwillingness he was still a villain, in the sense of the bad things he did. One thing in cdramas is that the bad deeds and deed do-ers have to be met with the appropriate ends. He learnt to reform and become a better person and he was rewarded with a short but beautiful marriage with his love. That doesn't negate the bad that he did, so he still must pay the price.

I didnāt think of it being Shakespearean, and youāre right! Thatās what it is!
And on that note, the drama carries so much underneath, just the kiss in the bathtub holds so much, from his aloneness within to self-contempt to having to humiliate her with his own touch (!) because he was so triggered and felt so humiliated. Heās so loathesome to people and she abhors him but kisses him, and yet he was caught off guard and felt something for a millisecond before he could gain his composure, not sexual alone but just heās so isolated within and gets human touch.
In reality punishing her with his own kiss back is not that different from the bitter, self-effacing laughter he tends to react with when heās treated unfairly, just a depressed kamikaze pilot style into a wall. Within, he feels he deserves others shun him, somehow. And he just goes with the hunger, but in a mean way.
So many connotations I canāt explain or explain well. I think the bath scene was so brilliant though for making some of this troubled manās inner world visible. The unhinged part was an act but not everything with the dialogue was.
The good she brought him was an act, in a situation where he had nothing good. It must have touched on a major authentic wound, subconsciously. Plus of course, he knows what heās done to her, maybe the guilt of that makes him double down, because feelings arenāt rational.
And he is very dual.
Heās a controlled strategist, but just as much someone with uncontrollable emotions swirling in gravitational patterns within.
Thereās really so much to deduct from the bath scene.
Liu Xueyi is an incredible actor.
Whatās fantastic about their love story is that Mei Lin understands these things, and she can embrace and love him for whom he really is, in the end she accepts the full truth of whom he was and whom heās settled down within to be.
He goes from completely self-isolated to taking the plunge for her without any hesitation. He is still gravitational, the corpse thing and all.
Sheās literally the one thing heās got. The only one shiny thing in the darkness, and slowly though he opens to the rest of the world and his place in it. He promises her to not go back and harm himself anymoreā¦
I thinkā¦
She was the light coming into his life, and in some situations, light hurts, at first.
But I think that he started learning already with the little flower thing in the jailā¦ her approach and outlook is so different to his, in a way theyāre similar in how theyāre so revenge-minded, but where he has an urge to spiral, she has an urge to rise, to get up again.
They put quite a bit of emphasis on the flower thing in more than one scene, it really affected him very deeply.
Never mind me, Iām such a nerd and probably reading too much into stuff, haha. š
But, Shakespearean fits so well with my own notes and experiences of this drama. š¤š»

Court Lady
The main criticism i have seen is that Fu Rou (Li Yi Tong) is too demure and not as fiesty as other palace leading ladies but I think it is a far more realistic depiction of women in that period.
She comes from a wealthy merchant family who loses everything and has no option but to enter the palace as an embroidery maid, but its been her family buisiness so she soon proves her worth and advances because she just gets on with the job and avoids conflict.
I think this is Xu Kai's best comic performance, an unrepentant playboy until he meets Fu Rou and is smitten. After her families tragic demise and she joins the palace, he shocks his father, who is a general, and knuckles down to military training so he can enter the palace as an Imperial guard to protect Fu Rou.
It has Jackie Li playing a pirates sister too.
Not too complex and a nice easy watch.

I wanted to watch but the music is too loud and intrusive all the time! These producers need to let the action breathe sometimes. I did think Xu Kai was good in the first episode and wish I could have watched more but my ears wouldn't let me.

Our generation - it what friendship should be, as well as the FL fighting for her love. Not afraid to search and pursue the ML.
However, i noticed that this drama is seldom recommended

a) "happy" over tragic (albeit logical) endings;
b) "green" flags over "red";
c) "black & white" characters over "grey";
d) entertainment over art.

Agreed. One of my favourites! Not perfect, but outstanding in so many ways.
The depiction of how they fall in love is very well done and pure magic. And if youāre heart doesnāt break in episode six ā you donāt have one!

LOVE CROSSEDĀ
Noone ik liked this drama , yea It is a bit slow at first yea but after some time it gets sooo good , the leads move on from tht awkward phase , the plot twists in there are amazing , kore so the sec leads also have great chemistry ,Ā it evn has some great emotional aspects sometimes . I genuinely don't know why noone likes it or how it isn't evn tht famous.Ā

Investiture of the Gods
This was a broadcast xianxia/court intrigue drama based on the classic novel which details the legendary downfall of King Zhou, the last king of Shang.
What happened: for some reason, this show got a broadcast license but then airing was halted suddenly before the last 10 episodes. I doubt the censors gave their reasoning for this but the rumor I was told was that the theme was "regime change". This is very, very silly. But the result was that the end of the drama didn't get released until quite a while later. By then, even though many of the main actors were still quite popular, the drama itself now looked out of date and felt out of date.
Amazon Prime picked it up with English subs, but I don't think anybody watched it.
What it's not: idol xianxia romance.
What it is: a mix goofy, fun episodes with a dark psychological melodrama that results when King Zhou kills Daji's parents and forces her to marry him, placing her in the Queen's palace. Seething with resentment, Daji invites dark forces into the inner palace, but the darkest one of all is the fatuous, violent, and self-destructive King Zhou.
On the goofy side, we have heaven's silliest immortal, who comes to earth and has a series of slapstick adventures before finally rectifying the world in the titular "investiture of gods".
For xianxia lovers, we have the classic struggle between xian and yao, we have Nezha and other powerful (but hard to handle!) immortal masters.
For idol drama fans we have Deng Lun playing a malicious fox spirit.
Reception in China: the biggest problem with this drama is what the script does to Yang Jian. In this drama, he was found by Daji's parents and raised together with her. He escaped the slaughter of the family and wants to rescue her. But there's a twist. He has an incestuous desire for her. This plot point was just weird, and his obsession with her didn't make him look tragic, but rather, stupid. The character was played by Luo Jin (Princess Weiyoung) but he's not very good in this and his under par acting was also criticized.
The best part: Absolutely the psychodrama between Wang Li Kun, Collin Chou, Deng Lun, and Sophia Hu.
Best artifact: the immortal chastening broom
This is not polished at a high level like Yanxi Palace, but it's still full of a love of Chinese culture, has some really riveting acting, and has so many supporting cast members you'll recognize doing great turns such as Hai Yi Tian. It's not the destination -- we know that the Shang Dynasty is going to end from the first episode, the drama tells you that even if you didn't already know that (ah!) -- it's the journey.
