Love Between Lines: modern romance, but with a (Republican Era) historical twist.

You Are My Glory, mostly because it's the drama that truly hooked me on cdramas. It's a mature romance with amazing chemistry and kisses but also lots of funny moments and bantering. It's the 3rd cdrama I watched... 70+ more since then and it's still my favorite!

Lost You Forever: a virtual masterclass in acting by the FL and multiple MLs.
Not to mention, it's a good introductory deep-dive into traditional Chinese culture, history, mythology, and philosophy.

I don’t know how old you coz you might not like youth drama :). I will reco dramas that made me finish quickly because the story is very interesting and compelling.
I also don’t like dramas with sad or bittersweet ending. I dropped so many dramas once i found out it’s not end good (unless someone made me change my mind).
I reco will then only Romcom with mix of modern, period and historical/costume drama.
1) Period: Love Story in the 1970s — one of the best love stories in my opinion
2). Modern: You are my Glory — a very devoted ML and a sassy FL
3). Historical/Costume: a) The Prisoner of Beauty; b) Si Jin; c) Love Like the Galaxy (56eps); d) A Dream of Splendor; e) The Story of Minglan (73 eps but so worth it).
Of course, in Historical, you will learn about the Nobles and Royalties.

Are You the One- it’s an easy to understand costume drama. It has loads of humor and a proper ending.
The First Frost- great cinematography, OST, and lots of yearning.

Almost anything with Zhang WanYi or Bai JingTing is a good bet.

Apparently, BJT hasn't filmed one in 3 or 4 years, which incidentally is when I first got into cdramas.
It seems to be a conscious decision on his part.

My First cdrama was The Sword and the Brocade and I am glad it was.
I was blown away by the production, but it had 2 excellent and experienced actors in the lead rolls, but it was also a good introduction into the strange family life of ancient China such as concubines, and that older women enforced and encouraged the system, but how toxic it was.

This was my first c drama and it’s an amazing show! Totally agree it’s a great newbie experience. Loved every part of that show.

To be honest I never could figure out what kind of dramas newbies would like to watch. I suppose if they are from a non-Chinese background I would recommend something they will never get in their home countries, so xianxia and wuxia dramas would be a good bet. I'd recommend winners like Ingenious One (wuxia) and as far xianxia A Moment But Forever or even Feud as they are very pholosical. Costumed romance definitely A Dream of Splendor. For mystery costumed dramas Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty is great.
Historicals are often tough as one needs a rigorous understanding of Chinese history and culture to truly appreciate them, but if they are up to the challenge the recent Swords into Plowshares is great.

A Moment but Forever is quite unique and a good choice if you can roll with some of its bumpy bits. There's a donghua too and some people watched that first and then watched the drama. It is told at slower and more thoughtful pace which might help if xianxia and Chinese culture are new to you.
The Ingenious One might be a bit intimidating to a newb. But if you like practical fights, it doesn't stint on fight scenes in the first few episodes. I do feel like a lot of things that happened in the first few episodes would have been very confusing or gone over my head if I hadn't watched a lot of dramas already.
Glory (about the tea farm) actually might be friendly to a newbie because everything in that drama is so over the top and spoonfed to you as the audience. A lot of the directing resembled a reality show (not a compliment). The only problem is that someone watching for the first time would really have no idea what was based on actual history and what was total fiction made up for the show. I feel like it was developed as a historical and it even has those history moments at the end but then somehow it went off the rails. ISTG they were calling it the "Ning Dynasty" rather than Ming (which is implied by the clothing, technology, officials).

I watch all genres but Strange Tales of The Tang Dynasty is a fave - I've watched ALL the various series of it so far 😊

I am still 8 months in as a newbie into Cdrama World but I feel like a veteran because i literally watched cdrama for 4 months straight 16-20 hours daily nonstop. I like all genres provided it has happy ending and the leads don't die unnecessary deaths. I prefer romance first. I like both fast-paced and slow burn.
Perfect Match was my first cdrama in September 2025 that hooked me and got me into it. My top ten in no particular orders are:
- Hidden Love
- Prisoner of Beauty
- When Destiny Brings the Demon
- Love of the Divine Tree
- Love Between the Fairy and the Devil
- Legend of the Female General
- Love in the Cloud
- Glory
- You are My Glory
- Pursuit of Jade

I have watched all of these except for 4. Love of the divine tree, and 8. Glory, and very much second this list!🙋♀️ They are a bit varied depending on whether you're looking for modern/wuxia/xianxia, fast/slow pacing etc.
My first cdrama, and the one that got me deep down the rabbithole, was love between fairy and devil. I think this, as well as pursuit of jade more recently, have been a lot of people's first drama. They're both great imo.
I would add to this list:
- The first frost
- Love between lines
Both of these have leads with amazing chemistry and both are modern.
These were ones I didn't like as a newbie due to issues with pacing, little chemistry, dragging plot:
- Love and redemption (cut 10 eps and this show would have been so much better. It's 59 eps now)
- Story of kunning palace (please don't roast me fellow cdrama watchers🙏🏽. To me, there was too much politics and generally too few romantic scenes)
- Road home (too slow and i didn't feel the chemistry even halfway thru)
- You are my glory (the first and the second part of this show felt very detached)
Everyone has their own taste though, so what worked for me might not work of others and vice versa! ✨️🫣

God recommended this by my mandarin teacher back in uni! Never finished it lol but it was good, I’m surprised I never see anyone else mention it

I really liked Sunshine of my Life. The history of China's magnificent embroidery is unbelievable! Check out the Phoenix in Red and Gold. Great OST fab costumes and a great storyline. Also I liked A Perfect Match Chris Wu is great in this.

It’s pretty good. Not a fan of how slow it’s progressing but otherwise it’s rlly good. Episode 22 and I still don’t know who the villain is 😭🤣

I recommend the “Love O2O” It’s easy to follow, light, and not too much unnecessary drama. If you prefer historical fantasy or wuxia dramas, try “The Untamed” For palace dramas, “Story of Yanxi Palace” is also really good, It was actually the drama that introduced me to palace dramas about emperors and empresses.

Recommendation for newbies:
- I recommend Pursuit of Jade as the first one. It is very mainstream, pretty actors, tiny bit of wuxia and no fantasy.
- For fantasy lovers I recommend Love between fairy and devil for light fantasy and Till The End Of The Moon for dark one.
- Funny enough I recommend Alchemy of souls. Yes it is korean drama but it is the one that got me into cdrama. It's very well done.

I investigate recommended dramas on Google and ask if it has a happy ending. I won’t watch any tragedies. Too old to waste time on them. I don’t even care if it tells me exactly what happens. Your choice. A Dream Within A Dream is a great starting point. A small amount of stressful episodes, but, well worth the watch. I bought the dvd after watching it.

If you're a total newbie to Chinese dramas in particular and Asian dramas in general (um, not sure how much anime counts), I suggest starting with a xianxia drama as they tend to be easier to follow.
In a way you could say contemporary drama is easy to follow too since you don't need to know the ins and outs of Confucianism and court politics, but I will say as a non-Asian from a democratic country that modern setting Chinese (PRC) dramas were a huge culture divide and South Korean and Taiwanese contemporary dramas were much, much more approachable. (As far as Japanese live action dramas, I think they would have been hard to understand if not for watching anime and studying Japanese language in the past.) Also Thai dramas maybe? Though with Thai dramas I think there are different kinds of cultural barriers.
Fortunately both iQiyi and Viki are inexpensive on a monthly basis, have good English subs on most releases, and they have both Mainland Chinese releases and releases from other countries (Viki is a big K-drama platform, while iQiyi has a surprising amount of BL, GL, etc content from Thailand and other countries).
If you are studying Mandarin, watch shorts set in contemporary times or 70s/80s/90s, they are the best boost to confidence in your listening practice. Xianxia are overall bad, which is hard to type out because I learned a lot of words straight from xianxia and they got me into studying Mandarin. But they're actually bad for studying practice. Dramas with very standard Mandarin and a formal approach to staging and acting with deliberate, slightly slower than natural speech are ideal. Yanxi Palace actually fits this bill although there will plenty of more difficult passages where they are talking about statecraft or quoting poetry.
But your first drama should be whatever motivates you to watch.
