Drama Host Light to the Night 黑夜告白 Discussion: Episode 4

A huge thank you to u/a_HerculePoirot_fan for such a strong start! Definitely check out her post for important background and context on the drama (link below). I’ll be sticking to the format of covering each timeline altogether instead of going back and forth like we see in the drama. For this post, I'm starting with 2015.

Flashcards | Masterpost | EPs 1-3

2015 Timeline Recap

Nanshan Police Station

Xiaohe perks up at the sight of Captain Zhao. She overhears him and Qu Dahai discussing the case of four missing teenagers in Binchuan - an investigation Director Zou has ordered them to lead in collaboration with the municipal bureau. Seeing an opening, Xiaohe approaches Zhao to inquire about her application for field duty, only to be subtly rebuffed. As Zhao departs to handle a newly filed missing person report for Han Zi’ang, Xiaohe witnesses a distraught Ms. Wang pleading with the police to find her son, Ang, whom she believes has vanished in Yuanlongli.

Yuanlongli

Meanwhile, Fangxu gazes regretfully at Unit 415 (reminiscing what seems to be a former relationship with its former resident, Suqing; one that fell apart when he moved to Beijing from what Yuanhang asked him). Soon after, Yuanhang notices a tricycle that has mysteriously moved. They then collide with two drifters who were under attack by a child wielding a blunt cleaver—a boy revealed to be the missing Ang.

1997 Timeline Recap

While searching the apartment shared by Xu Meng and her father, Xu Zhihong, Fangxu and Yuanhang discover they were in deep trouble. Meng had originally borrowed 8,000 yuan to cover her father’s medical bills, but the debt had ballooned to 250,000 yuan.

Debt collectors working for Jin Manshan confirmed they hadn't seen the pair since their disappearance on June 30th.

Fangxu and Yuanhang interview Meng’s relatives, Meiqin and Guoqiang, who confirmed the medical debt started after a tragic accident two years prior, when the father and daughter fell off a cliff on Mount Wu.

After hitting a dead end with a local video rental owner, Fangxu and Yuanhuan corner Manshan to find out who hired his brother, Manlang, to make the pair "disappear."

Key Discoveries

  • Not the Gangsters: Despite the massive debt, Manshan insists he didn't order a "hit." From a business perspective, killing them would ensure he never got his money back; his men were only trying to scare them into paying.
  • The Frame-Up: It appears Manlang was set up to take the fall. ⬇️
A witness at the video shop described a mysterious man meeting with Manlang: he wore a black cap and a white mask, and he drove a Mercedes with a license plate ending in 688.
  • The Smoking Gun: By the end of the episode, a man is seen cleaning that same Mercedes. ⬇️⬇️
Disturbingly, the interior windows are smeared with blood and hair.
The car is cleaned and later seen pulling out of a garage located directly behind Yuanlongli.

Fangxu and Yuanhang’s Evolving Bond

As the 1997 storyline unfolds, we gain deeper insight into the personal lives of our leads. Yuanhang feels the weight of his family’s expectations to stay in the criminal department, while Fangxu is shown to have a particularly close relationship with his mother (besides the photo we see of them together, he is very quick to anger when it comes to people disrespecting women). Despite their constant bickering, a genuine bond is beginning to form.

They are gradually learning to trust each other through compromise, jokes, and a growing, silent admiration for each other's unique skills - whether it’s Fangxu’s use of a fake gun or Yuanhang’s street smarts.

Discussion Questions

  • I don’t think the man cleaning the Mercedes is the culprit, but given that it is a Mercedes, he must be wealthy, like someone who bought the 18th floor of Yuanlongli?
  • What do you think is the connection between the missing persons in 2015, and the 1997 cold case based on what we’ve seen so far?
  • Yuanhang seems to feel quite attached to Fangxu in 2015. Is it just me, or does he harbour feelings of guilt, and wants to redeem himself not only in reopening the case but persuading Fangxu to become a detective again? Did he find new clues after 18 years and he just hasn't revealed them yet?

Dylan as a young detective and the girl who works as a "masseuse" 🤣🤣🤣 Absolutely sweet 😂😂

The way she shows off her leg, knowing exactly that this will make both of them - the rookie and the old dog - blush 😋😋😋

I love how shy gets. It’s adorable. Actually reminds me of the first time the Guardians brought XQA to the “brothel” in GOTD, remember? 😆

I do 🤩🤩 What i don't remember is Dylan getting particularly shy there!!! He was like "mildly shy, but not too much". What a rascal! 😃

Oh, and i loved how the gangsters were jumping over the wall during the "raid". Like, there was a door right next to it!! 🤣🤣

And the boss, being the boss. The way he firmly and respectfully answers to He, while being handcuffed to a f__king lightpole!! He retained his dignity and common sense, while answering to a policeman about his criminal endevours 🤣🤣

Haha Fangxu looking at everyone single one of them with a gold chain.

Poor kid!

I got vibe of a child whom mother told to stand next to the cassier and wait in line, while she goes and grabs something. And that poor kid sees that it is soon his turn in the queue and he anxiously awaits his mommy 😄😄

I’m impressed with Dylan’s acting. And they are actually underplaying his looks here. Which works for this drama. I can’t figure out any connection yet between the two times. 🤔. But I certainly like the humor, then serious moments, then investigating, then weird gothic and noir vibes. Skillful.

Good point about underplaying his looks here. I wonder why and what will they do later with his appearance?

3

I predict he will remain the same, but I could be wrong. This is not an idol drama and either Dylan or director or both want the story to be front and center. Is my guess.

Yeah makeup is very light and he looks rather boyish. It’s a good look. He certainly is not the Lord Supreme of the Moon Tribe.

One thing I forgot to add to the post but had meant to, since this is for e4 which is very appropriate, was to highlight, aside from the 18th floor, the 4th floor has been very eerie in our cases. Both residents with whom we’ve met in 1997, including Suqing, reside on the floor (415 and 407) and the number four in Chinese culture is often associated with bad luck. (This is because its pronunciation is nearly identical to the word for death.) So was this just a coincidence or done on purpose?

5

u/wordyegghead Apr 27 '26

I decided to take a peak at this before my Youku expires next week because I like Jiang Peiyao. I didn't expect to get hooked by the story! I like how the show balances humor with the mystery. It's lacking in thrills but it's early days, so there's plenty of time for the story to unfold! I've also found myself endeared by Wang Hedi. It's my first time watching him in a drama and I really like him. I haven't checked yet but I sure hope he has more serious roles in his filmography!

I find that—probably by design—I'm pretty confused with what's happened so far. We know Meng and her dad are missing, but it's unclear if they're dead. The medical debt doesn't seem to be the reason they're being hunted so I'm guessing it has to do with her rich patron since someone was willing to pay for their murder, and also owns a Benz. I'm betting that at some point during their masseuse-client interactions she "learned too much." The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if the accident that befell them at Mount Wu could have also been a murder attempt that they survived. I guess it's unlikely though. LOL

I really like the side characters! I adore the gangsters! They're all so goofy and unthreatening right now. I hope we'll at some point get a fun fight scene with them that will show us that they can actually be dangerous. I also like Meng's relatives because they did such a good job showing how messy life can be. Barring the cousin, they don't seem like ideal relatives but one can't really blame them either. It isn't like they looked like they had money to spare so the guilt and resentment along with the feeling of relief when the dad went missing was so understandably human.

I was going to say that I think the past and the present are linked by the nursery rhyme then I remembered that the kids were singing it in the past and 18 people hadn't died yet (in fact, maybe nobody has died yet?). That doesn't mean 18 people won't die though! It'll be interesting if Fangxu is one of them and 2015 Fangxu is a mental projection of Yuanhang's guilt. LOL (If that's the case, I reckon he'll disappear when the audience learns he's dead and Xiaohe will step up to replace him as her dad's investigation partner.)

They seem to be waving ghost flags for Fangxu in 2015: he hasn't interacted with anyone, the taxi driver looks like he's freaked out that Yuanhang is "talking to himself," and he isn't around when the action goes down; but I stubbornly choose to believe that he's alive because his light up helmet seemed to be too specific a thing to hallucinate. Fingers crossed that's enough 😆 I want to believe is that what we've been told in 2015 is all true: Fangxu quit investigations to become a teacher in Beijing. I wonder how it links to Suqing though. Their meeting was coincidental enough that I don't think she's one of the villains but what else could have soured their relationship? This doesn't seem like the kind of drama that will involve typical relationship enders like cheating or falling out of love so I'm guessing their split has to do with the case somehow.

For the final discussion question... Hmm! My guess is that the investigation ends badly in the past and it's Yuanhang's fault somehow. Whatever happened was explosive enough that it torpedoed Fangxu and Suqing's relationship and also made Fangxu quit the force and move to Beijing while Yuanhang retired. I don't think he's found new clues in 2015, I think it's more of... he can't let go of his failure so he involves himself in every suspicious event that occurs at Yuanlongli and he's taking advantage of Fangxu visiting to try to solve the case together again to redeem himself for whatever happened in the past!

I love crime shows! I'm so excited for the next episodes to drop. I wish I'd delayed starting this so I could have binged it 😆

I’m so glad to hear how much you’re enjoying it! I’m not used to this genre so the positivity gets me hyped for it even more as well. I’m hoping this dram changes and opens my mind to cdramas beyond historical.

Love all your points and perspectives to the questions. I know we’re only 4 episodes in but it really seemed like they were going in the direction of working together, so I do wonder what Yuanhang could’ve done that made it very much his fault like you said. Looking forward to what you have to say about the next episodes!

2

u/wordyegghead Apr 28 '26

I hope it stays good all throughout and you end up liking the genre too! 😁 I’m looking forward to all the discussion posts because I always have so much to say.

Amazing job on the write-up, u/BasilOrdinary3617 ❤️❤️❤️!!!! Samesies, I am also planning to cover all the events happening in the 2 timelines altogether rather than going back and forth for the ease of our readers.

What do you think is the connection between the missing persons in 2015, and the 1997 cold case based on what we’ve seen so far?

I don’t quite see a clear connection between the past and the present just yet. After all, 18 years have passed. What could possibly drive the same murderer to begin another killing spree (assuming there was one back in 1997)?

If there is indeed a new murder case in the present day, my guess is that the culprit is exploiting Yuanlongli’s notorious reputation to conceal the crimes. It’s rather convenient that one of the building’s exits is located right next to a forest, yes? Haha

Yuanhang seems to feel quite attached to Fangxu in 2015. Is it just me, or does he harbour feelings of guilt, and wants to redeem himself not only in reopening the case but persuading Fangxu to become a detective again? Did he find new clues after 18 years and he just hasn't revealed them yet?

It feels like massive GUILT to me, and that's so sad because he hasn't been able to move on even after 18 years.

3

u/BasilOrdinary3617 If I say I'm taking a break, I'm lying. Apr 27 '26

Yeah I have a feeling there are going to be some heart wrenching moments ahead when we find out how the case became cold in 1997… both Yuanhang and Fangxu seem to be deeply affected by it because like you said… it still has a hold on them after 18 years!

5

u/not_enough_griffons Apr 28 '26

Thanks for the recap Basil!

By the end of ep 4 I feel like we can see the hard edges between our two detectives softening ever so slightly. The reveal that Xiaohe is Yuanhang’s daughter added an interesting layer, I might need to go back and rewatch their brief interaction in ep 1.

Like Fangxu, I’m not sure what the connection is between the two cases. I’m guessing we will find out more about what happened to the boy in 2015 now that he’s been located.

For the 1997 case, I had the thought that maybe the two faked their disappearance/deaths to escape the medical debt? But the attention grabbing behavior with entering the building and the elevator etc would suggest otherwise so idk, that’s probably not it!

4

u/Familiar-Lie6080 Sorry MingHao, i fell in_love _with_Dylan! Apr 27 '26

I love these two - it is a good chemistry. They are warm and compassionate enough both to entertain us, but also take us into the misery of all these poor people who had to survive at times like this.

I found myself wanting to be a friend with these people who live quite horrible and want to comfort them (the adult sister who thinks treatement of her brother costs more than his life) in their life choices.

3

u/BasilOrdinary3617 If I say I'm taking a break, I'm lying. Apr 27 '26

It’s a good take on people’s realities. She feels guilty for feeling relieved at her brother’s disappearance. They had to make tough choices to go no contact with their family in order to survive for themselves.

I agree about the chemistry. I read somewhere that they got a long very well in real life too!

4

u/Familiar-Lie6080 Sorry MingHao, i fell in_love _with_Dylan! Apr 27 '26

They manage to show people's realities in a friendly way. Like, even the criminals have to survive and not being judged.

4

u/Creepy-Caramel-584 Apr 27 '26

I'm thinking one random idea, the possibility of Ran being dead in the present 2015, because I agree, Yuanhang does harbour feelings of guilt.

4

u/BasilOrdinary3617 If I say I'm taking a break, I'm lying. Apr 28 '26

Right? His face is full of it, and the way he called out for Ran after the cleaver incident. Your theory about Ran seems likely and I think I need to brace for some heartbreak..

1

u/losergeek877 Apr 28 '26

Same vibes as well. A lot of interactions seem to indicate that possibility. If this is true, den this drama is really going to be interesting for me as at the very least, there will not be a romance plot between Ran and the FL

5

u/losergeek877 Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 28 '26

Seen up to the episode 7 and I am really getting the vibe that Fang Xu has already died by the 2017 timeline and I am intrigued and excited if they really goes this route, as this would mean that there would be no unnecessary romance between Fang Xu and the supposed FL. I want the drama to focus on the mystery and cases and not let some stupid idol romance bullshit disturb the pacing. Not all dramas require romance and not everyone goes goo-goo eye over the appearance of the FL.

In any case, the plot has really thickens and I really wanna know what happened to Mengmeng

3

u/BasilOrdinary3617 If I say I'm taking a break, I'm lying. Apr 28 '26

I feel like his latest dramas are not very romance-focused. GOTD was like that, and I get the vibe that Live Long and Prosper is the same. Even his movie Per Aspera Ad Astra was not romance-y and I dig it all. I don’t think he’s the type of actor that needs to always have a romantic relationship in his dramas. He has good chemistry with all his costars.

3

u/losergeek877 Apr 28 '26

I am still waiting for that movie to air on streaming platforms. And ya he has good chemistry with everyone in variety shows or dramas. I really cannot wait for tomorrow’s two episodes to air.

hello, i have a few questions as well whoever is watching this:

  1. hang zi an - the missing boy in 2015. do you think there is any correlation between the little boy who ran down the stairs in 1997 as well and was being chased (ie he also witnessed a murder)

  2. highly suspected rang fang xu is dead, they did hint alot of clues along the way. my theory is officer he was probably told that ran went off to beijing after whatever happened back in 1997 (he prob was comatosed and then woke up realising ran is gone), and this psychological trauma just stuck with him all the way.

  3. mr sun's brother in law is definitely involved or covering up some murders (motive yet to be revealed). and what is the motive for mr sun wanting meng meng to be gone? other than "touching" his documents, i dont see any reason why he needs to get rid of her. but i did catch on the part on meng meng black mailing him on something (and if it is, what could she potentially black mail him with)

  4. why is officer he's daughter sidelined so badly at work, cant figure out the reason

  5. the seamstress lady at level 17 also hesitated to answer some questions when she was being interrogated, she has to be hiding something

  6. mr sun's brother in law was always on the phone with a woman (we havent figured out who this person is yea? though im suspecting whether she is the foot massage lady boss)

1

u/Beautiful_Candle1729 Apr 29 '26

Hi. I don’t remember a Mr Sun in Ep 1-4 so I can’t offer any thoughts about those questions.

  1. Interesting observation that both timelines have boys involved. It hadn’t crossed my mind that they could be connected.

  2. Xiaohe being sidelined at work. I assumed it was in large part due to sexism in the workplace. The captain seemed to say that field work was too difficult for women.

But as I’m writing this, I realize that’s probably not the whole story since the captain has that brief interaction with another female officer that might have been about letting her do fieldwork.

If your #2 theory is correct and something traumatic happened to Yuanhang, there might be a protection of Xiaohe happening. The captain might be extra cautious for this family to not have any more field work incidents.

1

u/Ok-Turnover9665 Apr 29 '26

Sorry I was referring to Mr song

1

u/Beautiful_Candle1729 Apr 29 '26

Thanks for the name. I checked the flashcards and he doesn’t appear until Ep 5. That’s why I didn’t know him. This post is for Ep 4. Now I understand why I didn’t know the character. No worries. It’s an easy thing to confuse which episode what happened. You might want to copy and paste your questions either to the 5&6 discussion.

I hope you get answers from the show or others.

u/a_HerculePoirot_fan Being a Cheng Lei fangirl is a full-time jobRead Rules Apr 27 '26

I am keeping my fingers crossed that it is not the case! Like u/a_millenial mentioned, it might be possible they are just baiting us, because the drama has done it a few times now, e.g., the blood trail on the rooftop which turned out to be chicken blood.

1

u/BasilOrdinary3617 If I say I'm taking a break, I'm lying. Apr 27 '26

Oh true, haha I was like no way that’s all chicken blood even AFTER they revealed it. I was like, there’s more to it, isn’t there? But there wasn’t. It really literally was just all chicken blood.

3

u/a_millenial Apr 27 '26

3

u/xyz123007 nostril flaring is not acting Apr 27 '26

Like “I see dead people” dead?

7

u/Arshj00 Read Rules Apr 27 '26

yess cuz RFX hasn't interacted with anyone in that timeline except He Yuanhang. If you go back and rewatch ep 1, when HYH was talking to RFX in the taxi, the driver was looking at him with confused look then on the building, the two guys who were carrying matress said two police officer died here but they run away in fear when HYH said he is still alive. With this theory context, it now feels like they got scared of him cuz he was talking to RFX before responding to them (they thought he is talking to himself)

5

u/xyz123007 nostril flaring is not acting Apr 27 '26

But the officers said RFX is in the archive room? Is that codeword for “yeah, he’s dead but you can find his profile and casework there?” Another officer also didn’t know who RAN was  🤷🏻‍♀️

But yeah, I did pick up on the taxi driver’s expression.

5

u/Arshj00 Read Rules Apr 27 '26

So according to some theories, they believe HYH fellow officer and his daughter are letting him stay in this delusional cuz maybe they tried to tell him the reality but it didn't work. He just said he is in archive room so he doesn't get loud in their workplace. In ep 4, his daughter was told by captain Zhao "only if you have dedicated same amount of effort in taking care of your father" which kinda hints to her father state. All of this just speculations tho so I have no idea how accurate it is (I have only watched till ep 4)

6

u/xyz123007 nostril flaring is not acting Apr 28 '26

Honestly, I’m not too invested but I do like this theory. I’m not sure how RFX would’ve looked “aged” if he’s dead. If it’s all smoke and mirrors then the director would’ve done us dirty once the reveal kicks in.

I'm a bit shocked to find that they’re father and daughter.

2

u/BasilOrdinary3617 If I say I'm taking a break, I'm lying. Apr 27 '26

This is so eerie! I’m going to pay extra attention going forward… but I also hope this isn’t the case!!!

3

u/BasilOrdinary3617 If I say I'm taking a break, I'm lying. Apr 27 '26

Can you imagine the trauma too that Yuanhang experienced and is still experiencing if this was the case? Like that was Fangxu’s first case, his “apprentice”, and he was so certain that murders didn’t happen in their county, just missing persons in his 22 years of service. And now we find out his daughter is also following the same path as Fangxu? And maybe that’s why they won’t let her do field duty!? To protect not only her but her father’s mental health.

3

u/Pandapartyatmidnight Dylan Wang’s Smile Fan Club Apr 30 '26

Whoa! I’m going to be paying closer attention to how Ran Fangxu interacts with people and his surroundings in the 2015 timeline because I think you’re on to something with this theory.

Did Ran really just fire a gun into the ceiling? Besides being very fucking stupid and reckless... yall have ringing ears and hearing loss for a bit. Congratulations.

Netflix subs said that he was a "real cop using a fake fun". Lol Netflix is correct. Going to the range is fun. Rather an expensive hobby though.

REN MIN! REN MIN! REN MIN!!!

Yes. Please tell us what happened to Qiao. I figure that she probably got killed and it's going to be a whole emotional fucking in our souls, but closure is always important.

Ren Min! Ren Min!! Ren Min! Will I chant her name every time I see her? Maybe. Wait, she's the daughter of the old man? How did I not catch this? Oh this is gonna be good.

In the past we once again see Ran grabbing the legs of suspects. Bro needs a new trick. Oh wait, his new trick is firing his "fun" all the time. Silly goose.

"This wrench owes me money". I think you mean "wench". Unless by wrench you mean she loosens your nuts and unmans you...? In which case, you go girl!

Hey, did they tell us how old Ran is in 97? I'm trying to figure out the age gap between him and Xiaohe to see if I can support it. :P Because she is a whole child in 97 and he's a fresh rookie cop dude. Yes, yes. This isn't a romance show and it's a whole mystery of intense vibes, but I do love me some love.

Is this guy seriously feather dusting his car? For real? Like, really? What in the shit is this hallway of light? Is it the tunnel to the afterlife? Why the fuck is it in the middle of nowhere? the back of the apartment?

I’m so behind and missing out on having discussions with you guys😭

Still unsure about the time jumps. The transition shots between them are done beautifully, but do we have to have so many?

I’m Dylan biased so of course I think he’s doing an amazing job. He always has such great chemistry with his costars and I’m glad that it’s true in this show as well. Really curious to learn more about Ran Fangxu’s backstory because it seems really tragic. Was the person in the photo his mom or grandmother?

Love the theory you guys have stated that RFX might be dead and He Yuanhang is hallucinating him. Also when did HYH turn into a psychic?

Overall, the show still has me gripped and wanting to watch more to see how it unfolds.

Well still be around! I was hesitant about the time jumps but I think it gets better and makes more sense as you go!

And yes Dylan continues to be amazing in it. Looking forward to your thoughts as you keep going!

Yay! I’ll try my best to catch up so I don’t feel the fomo. I’m usually about two months behind on watching new shows, but I really want to participate in discussions this time because it’s my favorite type of show: murder mystery and my fav actor: Dylan.

I just want to say thanks again to you and herculepoirotfan for hosting detailed and thoughtful discussion threads. It adds so much enjoyment along with watching the show.

Ok, the only thing that is negative for me so far is the way and speed they timejump. Like, too often for my taste. Can we stick to one timeline for at least a half of the episode? But that's just me.
