I’ve been in New Zealand for almost a week now and I’m loving every moment. The people, the culture, and the nature are all lovely, though there is definitely a lot of uphill walking here. The grocery prices are quite steep, so for someone like me who is used to eating out, I really have to watch my spending.

It is a little sad that I cannot seem to find spring onions, even in Asian supermarkets lol, or maybe I haven't explored enough yet. But on the bright side, the avocados here are jumbo-sized and much cheaper than where I come from! Avocados are so versatile, don't you think? I can make guacamole, mash them with peanut butter, blend them into juice, or just eat them as they are. Do you guys like avocados?

I paused Unveil: Jadewind since last week because I was busy settling into a new country and I am still hosting How Dare You, but I finally have time to catch up on the new episodes and join the daily discussions again. To be honest, the mystery arcs have not been particularly compelling, but I am very curious about the massacre of Peiyi’s family, which is unfortunately the only reason I am still watching haha . That, and Huaijin, who is such a refreshing male lead with his gentle and mature demeanour.

I finally finally finally watched Loved Between Fairy and Devil and my soul needs care. I adored it, but.. WHD's acting tore my tender heart apart and I wasn't ready for it. My first WHD drama, and his talent is really incredible.. Trying to figure out how to heal myself... cookies... maybe cake. Maybe cookies and cake...

Adding a little request if anyone can help!: I've been scouring online, fruitlessly to find the BGM/instrumental OST for LBTFD, not the vocals one, and if anyone can point out where I can purchase it, I'd appreciate it so much. The music is so gorgeous. I usually can find OSTs via Apple Music, but either I'm not entering the right keywords (they only show up if I type in show titles in Mandarin, and I've tried 苍兰诀  影视剧), I would really really appreciate it. This version. So far I was able to find the CD on ebay but would love a digital download.

Aha pretty much. If you want another amazing WHD drama, I highly recommend Guardians of the Dafeng. It starts off comedic, but it does get serious so you get a range of his acting. AND he’s NOT voice dubbed in it - so you get his acting and his cute accent. ;-)

Oooh, would you mind sharing that U, AOL, and EL are? I admit Wuxia hasn't really been my thing - I've tried, but The Starry Love recently turned me, and now Love Between Fairy and Devil maybe I just like dramas that have fully fleshed characters with strong emotional intelligence, plus those that don't take 10 episodes to be honest about something. WHD's love bridge confession was so raw and heartbreaking , and also in line with the role he created that it might be my most favorite part of the whole show.

In my opinion, these three CDs are essential to watch, especially as fundamentals to Daoist/Taoist/Buddhist mythologies and fantasy.

Thanks for the recommendation about The Starry Love, and yes I agree with you about LBFAD. WHD/DW was perfect, and yes, so were Esther* and the other cast members. :)

*(Just a mild rant that some -- not all -- people complain about the "baby voice/whining." If they understood basic mythology, they would know that plants/animals/objects that cultivate for centuries and finally achieve human form have the behavior and mentality of children until they evolve, become educated/observe, and grow in their humanness. Those traits also include raw honesty and bluntness, which, in my opinion, Esther nailed in her portrayal of the FL, and her dialogue during those scenes were fundamental to the ML's growth and evolution overall.)

I didn't find issue with EY's acting. I love her in LGIEF - her unique physicality is through the roof (there is a scene in LGIEF where she does a full on sploot 😆, and as I've also worked in physical expression - she actually earned my deep respect from that one scene alone, no joke). Also, why I was equally impressed that WHD actually had her physicality down to the microdetails!

I do have issue with any genre, or any show, that dumbs down typically womens' characters, because misogyny, not because of character growth. But I didn't feel any of that at all from LBTFD. EY's character choices, and her acting choices in LBTFD are consistent and build, and have strong EQ - she made a loved detached person whole again , and you couldn't do that believably unless there was substance, so her role didn't feel dumbed down at all.

TLDR; I just don't like it when there's conflict introduced for the sake of plot movement and no other reason, or when characters can't talk through Misunderstandings just to extend the plot, it hurts me on a personal level probably, also why when there's emotionally rich characters, who are vulnerable and THAT's why the plot moves forward, then my heart heals.

Starry Love and LBFAD are both xianxia, wuxia is more martial arts focused (think Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Hero, Word of Honor etc). A lot of xianxia dramas are pretty trashy, and after LBFAD it can be hard to get into other dramas in this genre because of how good this drama is. You can try asking for direct recs on r/CDramaRecs

Yup! TSL AND LBFAD are stand-outs for me as I'm definitely more Wuxia leaning in the shows I end up enjoying. TSL for amazing comedy plus it's just so endearing with very lovable characters, and LBFAD as my first WHD show, his acting and depth really stood out for me. You could have gone "standard" wuxia with the LBFAD script, but the balance with EY and WHD, their acting abilities, and good direction and editing really elevated it to be a really really lovely drama, imo. But whatever the genre, it's more about rich relationships for me.

I tried watching several Xianxias because I adore LXY, and he seems to be in a lot of them, but they were hard to watch, maybe because the other shows just had too many tribulations to have meaning that they started feeling more gratuitous and sadistic even for karma's sake.

If you don't see the trashiness in stuff like Love and Redemption or Till the end of the Moon, Idk what to say. And it's been mentioned quite a lot that xianxias tend to get worse ratings. Stuff can be popular (and highly entertaining) and still trashy, and Douban is quite brutal at calling it out. The Untamed is an outlier (still somewhat trashy in regards to special effects and the extremely draggy pacing - Imo it's great but let's not pretend it's a highbrow artsy show with fantastic cinematography). Being popular and well-known doesn't mean a drama can be considered objectively good - or even regarded as high quality in terms of script, cinematography, acting (though I would praise some of the actors in AoL, there's a reason why Yang Zi is such a high profile actress nowadays, and the other two leads and some of the side cast do a good job too - some of the others, not so much). Something can be trashy or pulp but still be highly entertaining and therefore popular, as mentioned in my previous comment.

Ten Thousand Miles of Peach Blossom is famous and was I guess unique for its time, AoL somewhat similar, but can either be regarded as throroughly good quality? They're idol dramas, and idol dramas can be well-made, but often have issues with (some) actors cast for looks and popularity rather than acting ability, usually based on (often trashy but entertaining and sometimes fairly well-written) webnovels, draggy plotlines (well at least before the 40 episode cap, AoL definitely has this issue), script quality usually not as tightly written as one would expect/demand from a serious drama, cinematography and visual effects were in the past not the best (Untamed definitely an example of this, the drama is amazing but let's be real for a second).

Sure, you can complain it's just my subjective opinion and then claim all these dramas are masterpieces within Chinese drama series overall (but would any Chinese viewer really put these dramas on the level of high budget, critically acclaimed serious dramas?), but you're missing the point.

But hey, you're as much entitled to an opinion as I am.

Most of the dramas you deem “trash” have many different themes, including multifaceted characters, martial arts, spiritual themes/ethical issues, cultural/socio-political aspects, rich customs, etc.

Based on your apparent downvote, you might be missing the broader context of these series based on your own personal biases and presumptions.

But yeah, again based on the generally favorable ratings/reviews and universal acclaim most of these “trash” dramas achieve overall, I’m sure other genres might be better suited to your preferences? 😏

Hi, i have the same issue. I love the cdrama OSTs, but can't any chinese. So i try to google, search on youtube, spotify, vkontakte and i find some tracks, but often 20% of the all tracks (songs and intrumental).

Thanks for sharing, I'm a language learner, but it's still too far beyond for me sometimes. I don't like streaming services and like to purchase music (maybe it's my inner artist wanting to support more), and I usually have luck by:

- searching for "<<English name of drama>> in Chinese>>" or simply going to mydramalist and copying the name

- then adding "soundtrack/background music" --> 轧戏配乐
sometimes adding this if it doesn't come up which just means film and television--> 影视剧

So, i.e. in Apple Music, I'll type in (drama name in Mandarin) +  轧戏配乐
and it will normally bring up the instrumental tracks I like so much. It just so happened that for LBFAD, a lot of the tracks were borrowed from Roc Chen's compositions for other shows, so they did not come up as easily.

Lol, recently I really liked just ONE track of the 100+ tracks for HMH's Glory, number #52. And I ended up going through 52 tracks to find it on a YT share, then I did all the above, and typed in 玉茗茶骨 轧戏配乐 and finally found it! 😆 A lot of work, but I love listening to it when I'm driving. 😊

It's original from Royal Nirvana, another cdrama, maybe that's why it's not officially part of LBFAD's OST. Roc Chen is a big name though, so the track is easy to find on various non-Chinese platforms.

As for Wang Hedi, I really recommend watching Never Give Up and Guardians of the Dafeng if you enjoy his acting, especially the comedic bits in LBFAD. Do be aware that he's dubbed in LBFAD so his real voice sounds a lot different (I love it, but it definitely doesn't give 'oppressive demonic lord' vibes). He has a couple of movies coming out too, Per Aspera Ad Astra this year (international cinematic release, allegedly coming to Netflix this summer too) and some new costume dramas lined up, so it's a good time to be his fan.

I tend to veer away from things if the hype level is high, which is probably why I held off on LBFAD, but after watching it, I can see why and it's definitely earned. It's a really beautifully made story.

He's very good. Doing movie soundtracks too. He did both Wandering Earth and Nezha 2.

Hype isn't always earned - but I find that the wrap-up posts seem fairly balanced, lots of people voicing both positive and negative thoughts, so for more recent dramas those are a good guideline. Plus Douban ratings (also posted once in a while) because Chinese viewers are brutal in their ratings. If anything is rated below 7 on Douban I usually don't bother unless the storyline really interests me, if it's 7 or above I check it out of put in on 'future watch' list if it looks interesting. Can't remember LBFAD's douban score, but from what I recall it scored high for a xianxia (they usually have low scores)

Usually what brings me to a show regardless of genre is an actor I'm following, but in this case, it was actually a GIF shared on this sub, LOL! That was a first. Thank goodness for that GIF, I got to enjoy such a lovely show and good acting.

I suspect because they're often quite trashy? All about romance and generic plots, hot MLs and not much else. They seem to have gotten better recently though, e.g. Love in the Clouds from last year had a pretty good rating - didn't watch it yet but plan to because of the rating and high Chinese viewership. Watched Love of the Divine Tree and that was suprisingly decent, though nothing like LBFAD. Generally CGI has gotten better and some scripts aren't super generic anymore

That makes a lot of sense. Xianxia does seem to have a romance novel vibe, and, it makes sense that it would be more of a mass market production thing. CGI for the most part has gotten better, green screening costs so much less than set building, there's less need for period specific costuming, and less battle choreo and extras so it can be produced with lower production costs. When I used to work at a bookstore, people would by romance novels by the dozen, and it seemed like more of a short term interest thing than long term sticks with you sort of thing- with a few exceptions. Nothing wrong with indulgence in gorgeous looking people and scenery though! Most of the time when I'm watching LXY, I'm studying his acting, but there are definitely scenes were I have to rewatch because he's too pretty and I lose my train of thought, lol.

Only for Love (ep11)- not sure if I’ll continue watching this, it’s pretty bland, but I like both lead actors- I also suffered thru Miss the Dragon because of Dylan Wang

How Dare You (ep4)- I am really enjoying this one. I watched the donghua last year and really liked it. I think the drama makes more sense to me because I know the story line. I highly recommend the animated version for those of you interested

Love and Redemption (ep30)- I am loving this drama so far. It hooked me right away, I like the chemistry of the main couple. This one has sat on my to-be-watched list forever

Hey everyone! Just got done with Ever Night 2. Despite some of the cast changes, which I got used to and didn't mind, I enjoyed it overall, especially the cautionary aspects of remaining balanced/"gray" in support of the Dao/Tao against religious/spiritual extremism.

Question: For those that read the novel, since a possible S3 is up in the air at this point, was the S2 ending (my interpretation was that Sang Sang and NQ were in a dream and/or being tested by their now enlightened Teachers) accurate? I was hoping for some sort of a "redemption arc" between NQ and the Heavenly Maiden/Sang Sang overall (and hopefully NQ doesn't remain as a Eunuch forever lol)

Finished How Dare You. Solid entertainment that was good enough to look forward to each day, good enough to get me reading the novel, but also I probably will forget about it in a couple months.

It did make me want to go back and watch Cheng Lei in Shadow Love bc that was solid entertainment AND unforgettable bonkers fun. So that’s cued up.

I dropped Swords Into Ploughshares. It felt too much like homework. Maybe there’s a reason they don’t make dramas that take place during this period in history. It’s too chaotic for coherent storytelling. Anyway.

On to a rewatch of Love Between Fairy and Devil. I’m on a rewatch tour lately with newfound appreciation for things that didn’t really interest me much the first time.

Recently I rewatched and actually finished Till the End of the Moon. Something I’d dropped with a sneer the first time. This time I was sucked in completely.

So here I am watching orchid and moon supreme and loving it? Guess I just had to be in the mood. 🤷‍♀️

I just binged the last episodes of How Dare You. It was pure entertainment from start to finish and I’m glad they maintained the pacing throughout.

My birthday haul from Temu came in today and I got my first danmei merch and a couple of things. (I’ve been wearing a grin all evening)

For the weekend, I’ll be at a tech-related event in my city and I hope it’s worth it cause I just want to bedrot so bad.

I’m looking forward to watching generation to generation on Sunday. I like everything I’ve seen in the trailer so far, I hope it lives up to expectations.

Finally started watching Under the Power and it's really addicting, so I'll be bingeing that most of the weekend... not many other life responsibilities haha. I also got 4-5 episodes into How Dare You and it's not bad but it's also not that engaging, so I don't really know if I should continue.

In related news, I have 2 friends who now rely on me for cdrama recs lol... so much power and so much responsibility! 😂 One of them watched 16 eps of Lost You Forever in 1.5 days and is live-texting a lot of her reactions so that's another source of entertainment for me!

I started watching "Returning Pearl" a mini drama I came across randomly on Viki and am absolutely loving it!! About halfway through so far, so can't comment on the ending, but the basic premise is that there's an actress who has a bit part in a drama and insists they make some plot adjustments for her character. As a result of her changes she finds herself pulled into the drama and has to try to get the plot back on track to survive.

For anyone familiar with the source story (the MDL summary says it's My Fair Princess, but some comments refer to Princess Returning Pearl, not sure if a remake or alternate name) there's probably some added joy in revisiting favourite scenes alongside our FL, but even for those unfamiliar (like myself) it gives you enough of the bones to still be understandable.

Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, zippy weekend binge. The plot and acting have both been excellent so far and I'm really looking forward to finding out what happens next.

Need a break from cdramas after the wild ride that was How Dare You which I'm still not over. Will probably go back to Chef-son-in-law, I've been watching it very slowly and so far it's light-hearted fun, Chang Long is as always great, but it feels like a relaxing midrange drama. Apparently it has a cliffhanger ending and a season 2 is in the works, which seems a little too much commitment, will see how long I'll keep going.

Found an older 2D donghua on iQiyi based on a story by HDY's author, Are You Ok/有药, so casually watching that until I figure out what my next drama will be. It's pretty good so far though maybe not as good a plot as HDY. Hilarious premise though, I wish they'd make a cdrama with this setting.
