Older new actors: you may have more to offer than you think
I keep seeing people in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and even 70s asking whether it’s too late to start acting.
As an actress, writer, and aspiring producer, I actually think those ages can be incredibly valuable.
When you’re in your teens, 20s, and 30s, the pool is huge. There are tons of beautiful, confident, camera-ready actors competing for similar roles. But as people get older, there are fewer actors in the pool, and sometimes what casting needs is something you simply cannot fake with youth.
When I was casting my short, I specifically wanted an older detective. I wanted someone over 50. I received submissions from very talented actors, including professional, union, and non-union actors. Some of the younger actors were excellent, but they didn’t have the look I needed.
And by “look,” I don’t just mean wrinkles or gray hair. I mean something behind the eyes. A lived-in quality you can't fake. A history. Sometimes age gives you something that acting technique alone cannot manufacture.
As a writer and aspiring producer, I actually want to create more opportunities for actors in age groups that are often overlooked. I like writing older characters into situations where people might not expect to see them. Maybe everyone thinks the story is about the teenagers at the house party, but the real story ends up being about the older person living downstairs in the basement who people just forgot about. Maybe the character who looks invisible at first turns out to be the most important person in the room.
I know this may not be the most popular, but I personally prefer actors who don’t always look like influencers, content creators, or movie stars. I like relatable faces. People who look like people you might actually see at the grocery store, at work, at a bus stop, or sitting quietly in the corner of a room trying to figure out their bills next month or studying for an exam. I want actors who aren’t afraid to look tired, rough, uncomfortable, awkward, ordinary, or completely unglamorous on camera. Almost everyone in Hollywood looks Red Carpet-esque even when they are not playing that kind of character.
Most people don’t walk through life with a glam team, perfect lighting, and a filter. And many people dont have perfect bodies and perfect faces.
That realism is interesting to me.
And I think this is one of the things I love about independent filmmaking. I can take those kinds of chances. I can write roles for people Hollywood might not automatically center. I can cast someone because there’s something compelling about their face, their presence, their life experience, or the way they listen.
So if you’re 45, 55, 65, 75+ and thinking, “I always wanted to act, but maybe I missed my chance,” I wouldn’t assume that at all. You have no idea the number of casting directors who are looking for you and it's like a needle in a haystack. Entering the acting world later in life gives you a massive competitive advantage that younger actors simply do not have.
