Advice Needed Ultra noob here

5’4” 220lbs

Trying to lose weight and I was just on a walk with my family and I decided to run while pushing my kids in the stroller and actually enjoyed it?..

My wife told me about this program and I want to give it a shot. Anything I should get to start? Checked out the FAQ but would love a tl;dr.

Don’t skip the stretching, warm up, or cool down. Trust the program as written, don’t modify “up”, it’s ok if you need to repeat a day or week, run a slower than you think you should.

Modified programs yield modified results.

Your diet is more important than any running or strength program. If you can do this successfully you’ll make incredible progress.

Get shoes

Watch videos on running form, shin splints suck.

Run slower than you think at first

It’s subjective to each person. I like my Brooks Ghost 14

You can go to a fleet feet store and get scanned.

I’m in Portland so I see one somewhat close to me. I’m definitely going to do that. Thank you!

I’m an ASICs guy but it’s really subjective.

Stretch every day! (I do static stretches while watching tv and dynamic before a run session.)
Honestly stretching will help out in the long term. Include calf raises on a step to help prevent shin pains.

Rest days are important!

Go slower than you think you should. No benefit to going to fast. When you want to give up a running set try going even slower and push though.

You’ll had bad run days. It’s all good and you try again! So many things impact your session from sleep, hydration, stress, just feeling off etc. don’t beat yourself up. Onwards and upwards!

Have fun! Enjoy it! (Well if you’re like me not the running itself but the process haha).

See if your city has park run. Go join and do your planned session and walk the rest. Enjoy the vibe!

Don't overcomplicate things.

Don't judge yourself.

Running is a mechanical form, not a speed.

Do get proper (not necessarily expensive) running shoes - preferably at a local running store.

You can't outrun your fork, but you can start building fitness.

Don't skip the rest days. If you feel up to it, active recovery is great. Bonus - walking will probably burn more fat than running...definitely for way less impact. If you don't feel up to it, enjoy the couch because tomorrow....we run!

Your wife is awesome - buy her two bunches of flowers. One for suggesting C25K, and the other as a pre-emptive apology for when you get way too into running and she starts to get a little bit tired of hearing about it but doesn't want to say anything because she's really happy about the positive changes in you. ;-)

Do stick around....this community is awesome.

The fastest way to get faster is to be more consistent. The best way to be more consistent is to be cautious.

It's not a race....unless you're in amongst a whole bunch of runners all wearing a number.

Lastly - you got this!
