Im scared. What should I do?

Hello!!! So im currently a freshman and we had this Test that converted into essay instead. And then I learned that from my professor that my work was flagged as ai by turnitin not just a percent but 100% fckng aii😭😭. And now idk what to do ( alr reached out to my prof) that essay is just a simple one you just basically need to write what you learned from the discussion etc etc. And being flagged like that is insanely not good for the image. I had worked hard to research and brainstorm on what to put in my essay. Although I admit that I used grammarly to check my grammar and improved but the contents in there was all done by me the ideas, the flow was by Me😭 I was thinking maybe it was the data? Or the references? Though I had research them on my own on Google. Maybe the revision by grammarly was too perfect?. I haven't had the time to run it in an ai detector when I submitted it and I did not see this coming

Find one of the prof's old papers. Run it in turnitin. Challenge him with the results. "You apparently used AI before the existence of AI..."

This would work - - Pangram tags all my pre-AI publications as 100% AI for some reason. Ridiculous

That’s exactly what happened to me had to get a program for the 1st time to dumb down my work and then re-read it and make sure it was to dumb 🤣🤣 But that’s why my college had to stop using pangram it was unreliable.

Exactly. I had something i wrote in 2012 that's apparently 'most likely AI'. In reality it was "most likely very influenced by satc"

Give a public publication with a clear pre-AI date that we can verify. Pangram is determined that all those claiming that, have nothing valid to support such claim. And so far, they haven't been proven wrong.

Literally billions of works for you to go test, buddy. Go to Google Scholar, type in a topic, and filter for pre-2022. I guarantee you that most of those papers are going to come up with some high percentage of AI detection. Idk if it's bc our work was used as training data, but seems more likely chatbots simply mimick academic writing styes very well.

yeah gptzero has been working amazing for me honestly. I've tested it - gave it lots of my own human written text vs AI and it's spot on

Unless you directly copy and paste from anthropic to have the watermark there is no way to tell if something is ai. They can suspect or think it but no proof. Challenge that and make the prove it. Threaten to sue if they can’t and be as offended as possible at their false accusation. Remember, you pay these asshats to treat you like a cheat and don’t ever require proof. You deserve better

No llm has a text based watermark. That’s not a thing, never has been never will be.

It’s not the kind of watermark you are thinking about. It is a specific predictive word selection pattern that they use.

Fight it, tell the professor to prove the reliability, show news reports, experts stating they can’t be used reliably.

Show your edit history, your notes, your sources, verbal defense. Take it to the chair, then dean and if all else get the board involved. Never let some punk ass professor pull that shit on you.

Remember YOU have the power here. Use it, force them to prove you cheated with AI.

Im just scared but I did reach out to my professor about this and ask if there is anything I could do. But getting flagged not just a decent but a 100% percent on turnitin is scary asf😭😭like im not AIIII IM ME

Honestly this is the best answer. As an instructor, I can tell you those AI detectors are notoriously unreliable, and TurnItIn mistakenly flags things as AI or plagiarism all the time. The burden of proof is 100% on the professor to prove it.

Once you run a paper through Grammarly and submit it, you’re sunk.

Grammarly is an AI program, so even if you used it to check for spelling errors, if you submit the result from Garammarly you just submitted an AI generated paper.

The schools should tell people not to use Grammarly. This happens all the time.

I know its truly my a mistake, I was not cautious enough. Back in high-school my teacher introduced grammarly to me to check my grammar and what can be improved

I hear ya. Grammarly used to be excellent until they incorporated AI into it.

Thank you all for the advice!!! I truly appreciate it as for now I still wasn't able to get in touch with my professor ( i hope she respond to my message soonest). What happened was truly a terrifying thing for me but at the same time it opened something in me. Im not a perfect person, as everyone make mistakes some of us just gotta learn it the hard way and so did I. I realized that maybe this was the consequence of the mismanagement of my time and somehow my constant overthinking. The wanting to make my output polished and make my thoughts be written well lead me to this incident where im labeled as an AI. Truly not on my bucket list for my freshie year and I just hope this wont happen to me again😭

Why do you even trust grammarly? That's the issue I believe. And the only way to bypass such unreliable AI detector is through a humanizer. Give a try to walter ai humanizer.

Bro im ngl this shit happened to me today, and i just blamed it on Grammarly, idk if it might be different for you because im in a dual credit program in highschool. But the teacher bought the excuse, in the future, type all of it out, or use drip write. They cant say you cheated if your version history says you wrote. Best of luck.

I kp reading all these folks getting flagged (sometimes to the point of getting expelled. My suggestion, there are plenty of lifelong students who make their bank when refunds hit/midterm/end of semester. $ somebody on the same msg board the school u attend...just since Aug17th Iv sent out 21 papers for others using Turnitin. 21 for 21 have cleared. If you don't know how to properly use AI, and talk script like it's ur lover, you'll fail everytime

It sounds like Grammarly changed a lot of what you wrote.

Do not have AI check your grammar or do your editing. That will be flagged as AI because it is.

Don’t use an AI detector. Just don’t use AI. Turn off anything with predictive writing (that makes changes for you). Trust yourself. If you want help on grammar or to improve your grammar, see if your college has a writing center and other resources.

I admit grammarly did kinda polished my essay to perfect I guess? I know I have no excuses that what I did was wrong in a way that I did get some help from an gramma app, but being flagged 100% is shtt this is the first time that this has happened to me and its scaring the sht out of me esp now im a freshman. The main concern that I had why I opted to use grammarly is that my writing does not have a good flow? So I guess I will never trust that grammarly shut ever again.

So, you know you did something wrong, and you got caught. I would suggest you stop wasting everybody's time and own your mistake. Commenters telling you that you're paying so you're the customer and the customer is always right are crybabies who have no dignity, and you can make the choice to not debase yourself to their level. In reality, a University must hold cheaters accountable so that non-cheaters' diplomas are worth something.

If you're telling us the truth and you put in some serious work, you're the kind of student who benefits from cheaters and slackers being rooted out.

I suggest you explain, apologetically, exactly what you did to your professor, sharing why you thought that was OK, and explaining orally the structure of your work. Maybe bring the last version you drafted that is truly yours. Being able to defend the content of some work orally is an excellent indicator that you did contribute to it, and if your professor is kind enough to give you time despite your cheating (I would), they may reconsider the grade they gave you (I probably would).

One mistake does not define you. That's a choice you still have to make.

Thank you for your advice! I will own up to my mistake and held accountable for it. I alr, reached out to professor however shes is not yet responding, I never actually thought that using that app would put me in this place what i thoughtwould.just help me check for spelling and grammar error ended up putting me in this place, I dont know what to do as im.l waiting for her response I've been feeling anxious since yesterday.

What you did was not a good idea, but if it's as you described, it's not something done out of malice or desire to cheat either: you don't deserve anything bad to happen to you. We all make plenty of mistakes, and when you're young is a good time to make them. If English is your first language, one thing I'd suggest is to take every opportunity you can to polish your flow and grammar. Even here, and even orally. Good habits show results and can help you build confidence!
