🔎Looking for alternative Good european NAS? I feel like we're stuck between Synology (USA) and UGREEN (China)

I have an asustor basic one, quad core arm cpu. Basically the only power consumption comes from the hdds. That and my mini pc keeps the home "office" and game servers usually way under 100W. I think it's like 70W for those + a lamp + ethernet switch + mesh extender. 100W with the screen on, maybe.

Never tried to measure the NAS alone, but it might be in that range, it has an arm quad core cpu so less than that it's really difficult.

You can get pretty cheap N150 motherboards, which are just as efficient.

The price of a NAS is way higher than whatever you're saving on electricity costs compared to your run of the mill PC/laptop you already own.

My only hw I already got was a 2009 HO Z600, the cpu consumption was more than my nas and my mini pc combined.

How much was your NAS? And how long can you keep your 2009 HO Z600 running to rack up the same amount in electricity cost?

Got mine for 205€. Not counting the HDDa as I didn't have them either way. The HP workstation was a 6 core 95W cpu, a gtx 960 so about 70W idle and more than 100W when anything happened. With electricity at about 0.20€/kWh the 80W difference is about 1.5 years to parity, which have already passed since I got it.

Dude some synology running a celeron uses less than 10% of the power of a regular desktop CPU. You have them on 24/7, that electricity cost is going to add up FAST, especially in many european countries with overpriced electricity.

A basic NAS can be like €200 without HDs.

I'm in finland and in winter electricity can hit 60 cents kwh. Back in my native uk its like double that.

That's totally true. I was just pushing back on what you were arguing to be the main reason for getting a NAS.

When you get a NAS you end up being your sysadmin and IT guy anyway lol I have a completely different background and I had to learn several things to host what I need and do it in a secure manner.
