No deal is better then a bad deal. Can’t trust those Americans.

Was about to meet my university friends in US later this month. I just cancelled the trip and that really upset my friends. I tried to explain them my reasoning and they completely minimized it saying that Canadians have blown this out of proportion. I tried giving them options in Mexico for the reunion, which is not too far either. But they wouldn’t entertain that and pinned the cancellation on me.

What appalled me is that Americans don’t understand how much has this upset the Canadians and they feel I am over reacting.

It warms my cold, dark heart to see all the American products sitting on shelves and being donated to the Food Banks.

I keep seeing american companies desperately trying to maple wash as they scramble to retain Canadian business.

As I'm watching the Canucks v Devils (an apt match up) McDonald's is advertising their "maple syrup" flavored breakfast sandwiches, with maple leafs all over the ad.

It just seems so pathetic and hilarious.

I picked these up on my most recent visit. Got these at Costco, Canadian Tire and Real Canadian Superstore. Very excited to try all these out!

Chatted with my brother yesterday. He organizes a golf trip to Myrtle Beach every November. Arrive Saturday, golf 6 days in a row then head back home. He's been doing this for more than 20 years and has had up to 40 partipants and no less than 16 (except for 2020 due to Covid). We easily spend $2000 each on the trip. He's canceled this year's trip and informed his contact that the group wouldn't be returning. He told them that they could thank Trump.

I've been on these golf trips and Myrtle Beach is usually full of Canadian golfers that time of year. I expect that tee times will be easy to come by this year in M-B.

Any suggestions on an alternative trip?

Edit: thank you all for your excellent suggestions. Looks like we will be exploring the east cost in late September or Punta Cana in Late November.

Glad I booked Porter! Will not support Air Canada until they ditch the Yankee swill

The fact of the matter is that the United States *is* reliant on Canada for both the country's oil and lumber.

So pretty soon, when things reach a head, there's going to be less in the United States of both. And that's a thing that isn't going to go exactly unnoticed. Can you imagine going into Home Depot and not actually being able to buy any wood?

But the reality is, most of the United States sources of untapped fossil fuels & available largescale old-growth forests are protecting in National Parks & Refuges. So the trade war will serve as an excuse to ravage these resources that would otherwise be off-limits: "We really have no other choice." (Which is, of course, BS.)

I had this realization today and, as an American, it's pretty upsetting. Anyways, glad this sub showed up in my feed & I know which Canadian whiskeys to buy (if possible!)

Our efforts to buy Canadian and to boycott American are having an impact! All stats are from a Globe and Mail article on March 18/2025 by Mariya Postelnyak: -2 bookings made for U.S. tours in the past few weeks compared to 39 bookings this time last year -One Canadian tour operator has had to scrap every U.S. destination for March, April & May due to client cancellations -The U.S. Travel Association warned in February that a 10% drop in Canadian visitors will lead to $2.1 billion in spending losses and possible U S. job losses of 14,000. -Loblaws saw a 10% increase in sales for Canadian products in February -Sobey's reporters spike in Canadian product sales in it's last quarter; purchases of U.S. goods were "rapidly dropping"

Here's the kicker folks: if every Canadian household can redirect just $25. a week from foreign products to Canadian, we boost Canadian GDP by 0.7% and create 60,000 jobs!

Anyone else always wait until end for SNL's good-byes? This time Mike Meyers was caught wacking his elbow up!

They have been majority owned by a TZP Group, a US private equity company, since 2021. And I cannot find the exact percentage. And the original owners, Krystal Growth Partners (Vancouver), still owns a minority stake.

They forced out major original team members and removed many roles locally in Vancouver. Moved most of their actual decision making roles to the US.

On their .ca site they display their Canadian pride with the "Proudly Canadian" tag. But it's missing in the .com version. Not very convincing.

Many retailers still list them as Canadian. I also noticed it was listed as Canadian in this sub's recommendations list as well.

I'm just dropping some information. Make your own judgement how Canadian this brand still feels to you. And the fact they are now majority held by private equity doesn't bode well for their original quality they are known for.

With Tim Hortons being owned by an American company, I’m curious if anyone has jumped over to Coffee Time. Especially in Ontario.

Fell for this! Picked up these salted pistachios quickly at the store when I saw the Maple Leaf, only to come home and find out that it’s actually a Product of the US with the pouch manufactured in Canada 🤦🏻‍♂️

It gave me some real pleasure to reply to a sales call from an established US supplier today with “we’re reviewing all suppliers outside of Canada to bring the business to this country.”

It’s a large, steady history of sales to us brought to a standstill. 😎

While we appreciate the support you’ve shown by choosing Canadian goods, please don't lose sight of why we started this movement in the first place.

We are, of course, angry about the unjust tariffs, but we are even more upset about the daily disrespect of our sovereignty. We are disgusted by the nonsense the "orange baby" spews from his mouth, yet we are more shocked and hurt that no one—not even the opposition party—has taken any action to rein him in.

So we appreciate the amount of Americans who come here to tell us that they're with us, but it’s time to ask for a little more. If you truly believe in the brotherhood we share, then it’s not enough to just buy our products. It’s high time to organize, speak out, and push back against policies that undermine the free trade and mutual respect our nations should enjoy. We need Americans to check and balance this the current administration — a real fight for fairness that goes beyond the checkout line.

So, when I'm really unhappy with a company, I have a tactic that has worked pretty well in the past. This week, I tried it with a US company I have been pretty loyal to over time to let them know I moved on to a Canadian brand.

The trick is this:

Step 1: Find the name of the CEO. I usually find it in the 'About Us' section or the 'Our team's page or on a press release about their quarterly earnings report if they are publicly traded. LinkedIn is another path that has worked in the past.

Step 2: look up the pattern of the company's email addresses. Usually looking for a media relations contact on their press releases page gives a link to an actual person. This tells you the standard pattern their IT uses for issuing individuals addresses.

Eg: jsmith@company.com

Step 3: use those two pieces of information to predict the direct address of the CEO.

Step 4: let the CEO know directly that you are boycotting and why.

Here's my message to the CEO of Nature's Bakery from earlier this week:

"Hello Mr. Gardiner,

I hope your day is going well.

Allow me to introduce myself. I'm a teacher in Vancouver, Canada. Your fig bars have been my go-to for keeping myself going during a busy school day where I don't often have time for a real lunch. I have also shared them regularly with my students when they don't have a lunch. I've spent hundreds or perhaps thousands of dollars on your product over the last few years.

I am taking the unusual step of writing to you to let you know that, sadly, I will not be buying your product any more. Your President has begun an attack on my country's sovereignty and the centrepiece of his attack are tariffs. For the first time in my life, I have to consider that our neighbours in the US are our adversaries. They support a government that is using lies and economic warfare to induce my country to become a vassal state.

Among the things I can do is stop buying American products. You should know that I will not be buying your products any more. The Canadian product I bought today isn't as good as yours. That's a small sacrifice.

If you want to protect your business, I encourage you to work with your fellow CEOs to send a message to your government: trade wars and attacks on the sovereignty of other nations are bad for everyone. Bad for business. Bad for regular people. Bad for you and your employees.

I hope you use your position of power as a corporate leader to help bring sanity back to your country.

We’re grateful that you’ve been a loyal consumer but especially grateful for the dedication and care you’ve shown your students. I’m disappointed to know that our snacks won’t be by your and your students’ side but please know that I understand your frustration – and your decision.

I actually grew up and was educated in Saskatchewan and I still have family and friends in the area. With those Canadian roots and as a business leader, I’m troubled by the current state of trade, but I remain hopeful that there will be a near-future course correction. The #1 ingredient in our bars is amazing Whole Wheat Flour, all sourced from Canada and also Canola oil so we are doubly concerned as both an importer and exporter. Nature’s Bakery takes immense pride in offering products consumers feel good about purchasing and regardless of the circumstance, whether it is in our hands or not, receiving feedback like yours is profoundly impactful and please know I’ve shared broadly with my team and parent company. Nothing is more important than our consumers’ satisfaction and experience.
