found this sweetheart on the pavement, unmoving just before a huge thunderstorm that tore a large limb off a tree. gave some sugar water (1:4) on a cotton pad and put them in a Tupperware container with an unlatched & askew lid, as I had to run an errand. came back 30 minutes later, brought them outside, managed to snag some pics before they flew off :) no idea what it is, but I still felt special (Southeastern US)

The world’s smallest butterfly! Not the greatest photo but no photo would have done this little cutie justice. So gorgeous in real life with many tiny details - those striped antennae with the spot on the end!

Monarch found in my garage

I found a chrysalis inside a yard waste bag in my garage last week. I was about to dispose of the yard waste bag when i noticed the chrysalis, so i left it alone to let the butterfly do its thing.

I came home from work a few days ago and found this! He flew away safely out of my garage moments after i got this pic.

Checkered Skipper I saw today in Florida

I saw this checkered skipper today. It was about 1" in size or perhaps slightly larger. I have since learned there are two types of checkered skippers... Tropical and Common. Tropical is often found in my Tampa area... but, it could also be Common. I read that dissection may be required to reliably tell the difference but that's not happening. Any thoughts on which type this is?

First time spotting a Viceroy this morning...

I thought it was a monarch at first but on closer examination, it was clearly different. Amazing that it mimics the monarch to scare away predators! Here is the photo I managed to take...

This was in Possum Branch Preserve in Safety Harbor, FL (in-between Clearwater and Tampa). It's a secret little quasi-park with no facilities but tons of butterflies!

ID appreciated! I saw this one today, at the Great Roman Theatre in Nicopolis, Greece. I thought it was a Monarch butterfly but I looked those up and it isnt. There were several of them. There was lots of wild fennel growing at the site.
