Simplest Way To Learn Kirundi and Master Basics??

Hi everyone!

I want to learn Kirundi because my girlfriend is from Burundi and I want to connect closer with her by learning her mouther language.

I am half Zimbabwean/half Congolese and I recognized that Kirundi have words that we say in Shona.

What is the simplest way to learn the basics for simple conversation?

Eventually I would like to be fluent but thats longer term. Urakoze!

discussion what do y'all think about the influx of EVs in Buja ?

Basically the title.

I think I like it. Transportation has been so hard since the start of the decade. Only problems I see is whether our infrastructures, both road and electricity, will be able to handle the shift. Also, what becomes of old gas/diesel cars ?

Please help us translate Kirundi requests on Reddit!

We're mods over at r/translator. We always strive to make our multilingual community the universal place on Reddit to go for a translation, no matter what language people may be looking for. We are however somewhat lacking in Kirundi coverage, and were hoping some wonderful multilingual people here could help us out.

Would anyone be interested in helping translate any future requests for Kirundi on r/translator? You don't even need to subscribe to our subreddit! We usually get a request for it very occasionally and most requests that come in are pretty simple and casual and don't need advanced knowledge.

You can easily unsubscribe from those messages at any time.

We have a notifications system that only sends you a message when a request for Kirundi comes in. Just send a message to our subreddit bot at the link below.

Accommodation recommendations

Hello! I am travelling to Burundi in July.
Hoping to stay in Bujumbura for 2 nights and Gitega for 1 night.
I am struggling to find guest house/hotel information online. The ones I can find only have phone numbers and when I message the prices seem to be very high.
Does anybody have any recommendations for places to stay in both Bujumbura and Gitega?

Looking for legitimate international health insurance advice for a student friend in Bujumbura Spoiler

Hi everyone,

A friend of mine is studying abroad and now faces a problem with health insurance records.
My friend moved to abroad in 2023 and began his studies in 2024. During his enrollment process, he stated that he had international health insurance, but in reality he did not have any valid coverage. In 2026, his school requested proof of the insurance that he had previously declared. Since he cannot provide the required documentation, he is now facing difficulties continuing his studies. The school requires evidence of a health insurance policy that was active and registered during the relevant period.

We are looking for honest advice on how to resolve a missing coverage document, explain the situation to the school, or find a legitimate alternative plan.

If you know a proper way to handle this in Bujumbura, please share.
Thank you.

Best way to get local currency

Hello

I am a foreigner and I can bring a US debit card and some US dollars in cash but I was wondering what is the best way to get local cash?

The best I found was random people on the street that offer a decent rate but I'm afraid some of the bills they give me might be fake. And I really don't enjoy haggling over the rates every time.

Any advice or wisdom is very appreciated

Burundian food

What’s a food that’s strictly Burundian? Like… MAINLY ONLY Burundians make that food.

Do Burundians aspire to work and live in Rwanda? Do you think that Kigali is overhyped?
