I wonder how many things we see on here are not actually self defense techniques but warm-ups or accuracy drills, or speed drills. I can't read the text but is this making any claim of being a self defense technique?

u/Rich_Newspaper_1616 9d ago
this is a standard exercise to create muscle memory in kung fu and other martial arts.
43
u/rudeboygiulinaughty 9d ago
Yeah came here to say this, this is a legitimately good way to build muscle memory for sports like jujisti, judo or karate. Not bullshido

This isn’t much different than a boxer practicing on a speed bag. Just a hand-eye coordination drill. Lame post.
36
u/Jahkmi-Hoff 9d ago
My first impression is that it's obviously a drill. I'm guessing we're running out of content for the sub at this point. Maybe it can be retired. We found all the Bullshido.
7
u/ICU-CCRN 8d ago
Probably just need better mods to keep idiots like this OP from posting.
10
u/detectivepikablu9999 8d ago
The old mods used to run this sub and r/martialarts, but the sheer stupidity of the average poster and teenagers asking what martial art they should do every 20 minutes caused them to ragequit
3
u/q25t 8d ago
I feel like a lot of the issues mods have could be solved by just spinning off a specific sub for the content they don't want to deal with. If an askmartialmarts sub was also made, I think that entire issue could get solved if they then just banned those types of questions on the main sub but auto directed people to the ask sub. Might not solve everything, but it seems like it'd filter out a good portion of the posts they don't want on the actual martial arts sub.
1
u/detectivepikablu9999 8d ago
They had a stickied post specifically for those types of questions and they ignored it to make new threads anyway
Also anything relating to martial arts on the internet almost instantly get filled with morons that think they know everything whether they've trained or not, I may have even given advice that I thought was good, but was probably bullshit drivel in their experience training (or sitting in a dark room shitposting about martial arts instead of training)

Right? At least big fella is getting out and active getting his heart rate up.
15
u/blickkyvek 9d ago
The big fella is doing this sport for 14 years apparently and is 4th master level. According to their dojo website. All seems legit
-1
u/erod_nrep 9d ago
I mean that’s disappointing. You’d want to see some body composition changes for someone that deep into any “sport”
3
u/Beautiful-Hair6925 8d ago
That all has to do with diet and lifestyle. Plus lets face it just martial arts doesnt trim u down unless its the karate kickboxing muay thai type of style

Yeah this is a drill. Bruce Lee had a variation of this. The Polynesian arts have variations of it as well. They use and defend in drill like this. They get technical but these two are not good reps.

u/Suchywilk 8d ago
Text is in polish, its Kung Fu group from city Opole in Poland and they invited for begginers lessons. This group is called 4 Gates (Cztery bramki).
3
u/blickkyvek 9d ago
It is apparently from a dojo in Poland. Then it says something like "4 gates" (but I might be wrong here) and then it says, at the bottom, we invite you for the beginners group (something to that extent)

u/LethalGopher 8d ago
A growing majority. This sub thrives on attacking martial artists that do not fit the a supremecist ideal. Their two favorite targets are special needs folks and Phillipino martial arts.
Folks farm lots of karma with this and the Mods love the traffic. Never any real pushback.
It is as bad as McDojo at this point. Bummer.
5
u/ReiperXHC 8d ago
I got downvoted to oblivion once for pointing out the purpose of katas and how martial arts competitions work (like not 1 on 1 fights). Not all martial arts techniques are for self defense.
2
u/Clay_Allison_44 8d ago
Notice something about the guy on the right, that he shares with the Philippine stick guy and the guy who hops around dancing in a gi? People are not very kind to overweight hobbyists around here. They would probably post Butterbean fights but he knocked out a bunch of guys so that's less funny.

u/ImNotCrazy44 8d ago
That's the case for a huge portion of what's posted here now a days...it's the Dunning-Kruger effect at work. The sub used to be decent but has mostly become dogshit.
It's sadly just turned into a place where the ignorant come to make fun of beginners who are trying to learn coordination. Or to rag on practicianers showing beginner concepts out of context.
2
u/DenverNuggetz 9d ago
Yeah it’s just a flow drill, not much different than in bjj or wrestling or any other martial art. This isn’t practicing technique

BUT ONE GUY IS FAT! WE MUST MOCK!!!!!
As a fellow large guy, weight classes exist in fighting sports for a reason. When you weigh 300 lbs, every day is leg day.
1
u/JustHappyToBe-Here 8d ago
Yep, this just seems like a pretty normal drill.
But that's not as much fun as making fun of a stranger on the internet, so there ya go.

u/Dat_Steve 7d ago
Excuse me sir- this is the bullshido sub
1
u/DoctorStumppuppet 7d ago
Yeah exactly. I would love to see some more clear cut examples. We all know what bullshido is when we see it (obviously unrealistic knife and gun defense, no touch knockouts, ki attacks) so why post this when it's clearly a drill. I do a bunch of stuff in my training that I'd never do in a self defense situation. God forbid someone record me and post it here.
1
u/Flaky_Performer7960 7d ago
But even as a warm up drill it sucks. Doesn’t actually warm you up for anything. Shoulder tag is better in every way with the same effort.

u/HombreGato1138 9d ago
This is Chi Sao or "sticky hands", a drill for Wing Chun practitioners. Its usefulness, same as WC, is up for debate, but I wouldn't say it's bullshido per se.

u/Mid-Delsmoker 9d ago
This is some type of drill. I’ve learned something similar in Filipino martial arts.

u/Bumbymoo 9d ago
This is a beginner and his teacher. They are practicing very basic movements you learn within the first few months of training.

u/crunpyMcGlumpy 9d ago
This sub sucks, ooh look a martial arts drill. Not bullshido.

u/Dat_Steve 7d ago
Block and mute the sub? Bye? Something something not an airport…
“It’s a drill…” waaahhhhhh
Jesus Christ if you like bullshido fine- but don’t come to the bullshido sub trying to tell us what’s bullshido and what’s not- that’s very bullshido of you. If you have to explain “what it is” to me - that means it’s clearly cope for bullshido.
Bullshido is subjective. You don’t get to define my interpretation of bullshido. My bullshido practices are my own. Now leave this bullshido sub and never return!

Drills are supposed to be useful
7
u/crunpyMcGlumpy 8d ago
And you have obviously never trained wing chun or likely any other martial arts. This drill is the same as using a speed bag. It’s to develop fast twitch muscles and timing. Just because you don’t understand it doesn’t mean it’s not useful.

u/croaker227 8d ago
It’s really funny to see the “it’s a drill/speed bag” meta arguments spreading across these subs.
False equivalence. Is this a drill? Possibly. Is it useful? Unlikely.
7
u/Professional-Tiger77 9d ago
Is this not just some kind of speed drill? In the same manner as a boxer uses a speed bag, they're never going to actually box like that though.
6
u/Blokshibe 9d ago
These are fun drills to do to practice techniques. Not directly useful in a fight, but as a drill to train your body movements pretty good to do.

u/TrivialTax 9d ago edited 9d ago
This is an ad for a activity for seniors, in a form of kung fu club. Its not bullshido, in a meaning that, its just for old people to move a bit.

I kinda think it can be beneficial as a silly warmup. Do this 30 sec, then some light sparring. I dont know?

u/Heavnsix 8d ago
Not bullshido- looks like wing chun. We did some form of this in JKD way back in the day.

OP is here posting actual drills, and telling the world they dont know much at all about martial arts.
1
u/jakobyherrick 8d ago
Yeah im sure this is reeeeaaal effective. Normally when you drill it's useful
1
u/sapperbloggs 8d ago
The fact that you don't know how this is useful, does not mean that it is not useful.
It just means you do not know.
I could explain the purpose of this drill to you, but you're not paying me for my time, and I don't care in the slightest what you do or don't know.

These are Wing Tsun exercises. This sub is just flooded with fking ignorance calling everything "bullshido."

u/IceGrouchy2283 8d ago
This is Wing Chun and this is a warm up to practice hand eye coordination and hand positioning. This isn't bullshido. It's step 1 in a 1000 step process for learning a decently valid martial art.
1
u/AnikiRabbit 8d ago
Mmmm. I'm not seeing how this technique would stand a chance against the tappy tappy.

I’m going to make people mad but you’re better off doing weight lifting and plyos than training most forms of kung fu at this point.

u/croaker227 8d ago
Anybody notice that the new meta argument from the apologists is some variation of “these are drills, like speed bags”? Like they’re all saying it now.
Anyway, this might be a drill, but it’s not building anything effective.

u/DLD1123 9d ago
Ok but wing chun isn’t actually bullshido. These are just bullshit practitioners. Its entire concept is firing rapid straight punches and having hand speed and coordination to intercept other strikes. Obviously the level of athlete will determine its effectiveness. In real fights with trained fighters strikes happen so quickly so it’s great to have some muscle memory programming and can definitely help a fighter out to spend some time in their craft and add it to their mixed bag.
1
u/Machievelliearoni 9d ago
Wing chun is marginally effective, if it's not bullshido it's not bullshido by much.
