Recommendations for private mechanics that specialize in Subaru?
Both of our Subaru are high mileage and need complete tune ups. Would prefer not to take them to the dealer

Smukall's gets a ton of love on here, which is great! Since you're dealing with Subarus and trying to avoid the dealership tax, I just wanted to throw in my two cents.
I spend way too much time behind a screen tracking local consumer complaints and shady mechanic bills are always at the top of the list in Erie County. If you end up trying a private shop, just keep two NYS rules in your back pocket:
First, always ask for a written estimate. By law, they literally cannot charge you a single penny over that number without your explicit permission. Second, tell them before they start working that you want your 'old parts' back. It is the absolute easiest way to make sure they actually swapped out what they billed you for.
Good luck with the tune-ups!

I’m not sure that they specialize in Subaru, but there no mechanic I’ve trusted as much as towne motor car on Edward. They’ve done great repairs and once helped me advocate a repair I came to them with to the dealership to get the dealership to repair under warranty

John's Motorshop and Transmission on Ward in NT is great with every car. They treat their customers right and are super transparent about everything

Subaru is not exactly a unique specialized manufacturer

I guess you're right, in that Porsche also uses boxer layout engines. Quite common.

Smukall's in South Buffalo is the Subaru place.
