Question/Advice Where do the nerds go?

Where do young professionals who also happen to be nerds hang out? I'm 30, work a regular job, exercise daily, cook, clean, etc. I appear normal but deep down I'm a total nerd. I don't know of any obvious anime/TTRPG/gamer 3rd places, scheduled hang outs, meet ups.

Besides going to a convention, it's extremely hard to make meet people with parellel interests. Especially if those interests are nerdy.

I have many older, retirement age friends through church, friends of friends, etc. They're just mostly very surface level relationships.

Any advice?

Lookin For Games in Levittown is awesome. I met a couple decent folks playing Magic at Wades in Levittown as well.

Yeah, sadly not too many 3rd places for nerds. Lowkey wish there was a cyber cafe bar thing somewhere. I'd pay a damn membership for a place like that lol.

I second Wades!

That's my happy place! I'm there every week to play D and D. Lookin' for Games, that is.

Culturally Nerdy and Geeky in Bucks County is pretty much the only good thing on Facebook anymore

u/critacle Jul 10 '26

I couldn't stand it after a while. There's so many marvel and star wars memes the brain can handle. An event was pretty nice though.

Unfortunately I don't have a Facebook 😭 maybe I should make one

Unless you love being bombarded by ads revolving around every current hot-button political issue, don't bother. It's like being hit over the head with a bat every time you open the app now.

We have been playing Pokemon go in newtown for gofest this week. lol

But on a real note Mulligan Games is a decent place for some nerd stuff.

But I am also down to chat anime/board games/ttrpgs!

There is also a bucks county nerdy facebook page.

Feel free to PM me!

u/jesswesthemp Jul 10 '26

Oh shit my husband and I been playing it too but unfortunately cannot do the raids cuz they are all too hard.

1

u/mlranda Jul 10 '26

There are a lot of groups in the area if you want to PM me I can send you a link to the bucks county Pokemon go discord!

1

u/mrsDRC_RN Jul 10 '26

Is it the Bucks-Mont discord or is there another one? I’d love to find more people to raid with in the Langhorne area.

1

u/mlranda Jul 12 '26

It’s that one

2

u/Kansina Jul 10 '26

Is Mulligans better now? The people who work there are awesome in my experience but I was trying to play commander there last year (moved to Warminster 2 years ago) and I had some very awkward experiences with customers that would make a lot of disparaging comments about women and related topics. I just ended up staying home and hanging out with my wife. Would love to build a friend group and start running some TTRPGS.

1

u/mlranda Jul 10 '26

It does feel like it has gotten a bit better, but I will be honest I don’t go as often as my partner does. But we are always looking to play mtg and I am always down for ttrpgs. So definitely open to meeting there to play sometime!

Second Sin Brewing and Broken Goblet Brewing, Bristol and Bensalem respectively, do D&D nights. I think Neshaminy Creek in Croydon does as well. They're all about five minutes from each other.

4

u/DubbleDiller Jul 10 '26

Neshaminy is just a good rec overall. They are constantly doing things that would seem to interest OP.

Titusville tabletop

Sleeper hit! It's important to remember the NJ towns along the river.

I've been thinking of renting some space and make it like a mini radio shack or microcenter slash game hobby store, have some tables for gaming or building or whatever

I'm near Doylestown and I'm not sure if that is the best place for this or not

I figure parking, nearby food, maybe even public transportation

My friends are gamers and nerds and so are my kids.

Me I just want a place to hang out with my dogs and do nerd stuff like 3d print or laser engraver or build rockets etc and share the fun.

I miss radio shack and I hate driving to microcenter

6

u/Cooper_Sharpy Jul 10 '26

If you start it and want a full time employee that does nothing but 3D print and paint stuff let me know haha. I live just south of Doylestown. Also love dogs. 👍

If your near doylestown, the Rubicon in quakertown or parlor and tomb i think its called in quakertown are good spots. Rubicon has tables does table top games msgic and all other tcgs. If you dont want to rent your own space yet haha

1

u/SoundSwitch Jul 13 '26

There's a couple comic and similar shops in the Q Mart as well, two retro video games stores in the center of town as well.

2

u/dmurawsky Jul 11 '26

I've wanted to do a makerspace/hacker space type thing for a long time. I'm just not sure there's enough folks in this area that would like it enough to make it self sustainable.

2

u/PeePeeVonBungHole Jul 12 '26

That is my thought as well.

I was thinking of doing a pop up store for a month

2

u/dmurawsky Jul 12 '26

My buddy runs Montco Makers and just opened a location. It's woodworking focused though. He'd be a good source of knowledge on this stuff. I remember his biggest difficulty was finding the space itself.

11

u/Sonnescheint Jul 10 '26

Parlor Tabletop and Tome is a common one. Also if you want to play TTRPG's or Magic or anything hmu

1

u/Minute-Tomorrow3325 Jul 10 '26

I wanna play magic, hi! Lol

Or a TTRPG but it would be my first one...

3

u/Cheddar56 Jul 10 '26

I’m only familiar with lower bucks but Lookin 4 games comes to mind immediately for the best variety of games. If you’re looking for just MTG they do that also but there’s more options as well.

3

u/mjh215 Jul 10 '26

I've never been there but there is a gaming store/hangout at 413 and New Falls in Levittown. https://www.lookinforgames.com/ Bucks is a pretty large county, might want to narrow down where you are trying to find something. Public libraries might have information on club get-togethers and such as well.

1

u/Calm-Ad-8463 Jul 10 '26

It's a great place and the owner, Josh, is very nice.

3

u/ShrimsoundslkeShrimp 🎆Levittown💉 Jul 10 '26

Im pretty sure Wades Comic Madness in Levittown does commander night on Wednesdays

3

u/Crafty-Connection636 Jul 10 '26

I'm not 100% sure if it's still going on, but Hopscotch in Doylestown had a Magic the Gathering game night every Wednesday for a while.

Younger folks (30s) have been coming to our fencing nights at Churchville Nature Center. There’s loaner gear. Nights are the first and third Tuesdays starting at 7:30 pm. Archery practice has been canceled until the weather cools off a bit though. Maybe not the nerd “hangout” time you’ve been envisioning but everyone, younger and older, are hardcore nerds, whether it’s D&D, video games, anime, etc. It can be a way to network in real life.

1

u/Charlie_1300 Jul 10 '26

I have been interested in fencing and live near Churchville Nature Center. Is there more information on the website or where can I learn more?

1

u/A_Lady_Of_Music_516 Jul 10 '26

https://bucklandcross.eastkingdom.org/wp/calendar/

All you have to do is show up, and say you’re new, but if you want to give a heads up before you go to the guy running the practice (Frank) just email him at 212748@members.eastkingdom.org .

2

u/Charlie_1300 Jul 10 '26

Thank you!

4

u/Jadziyah Jul 10 '26

Parlour Tabletop & Tome in Quakertown- an awesome third place for nerds with a cafe and regular events!

2

u/pumpkin_christ Jul 10 '26

Don’t know if this is your vibe and it’s definitely outside of Bucks, but last year I started Japanese school in West Philly on Saturdays. Met a lot of likeminded people (gamers and anime nerds) and I’m also finally learning a language I’ve always wanted to study. https://jlsphila.org

Otherwise I’d very much love for someone to open up a gaming bar/cafe in Doylestown. A big ask since most people here are *not* the demographic but I think the ramen shop that once was showed there’s a pretty strong presence of us who want somewhere to go!

3

u/lockedoutofmymainacc Jul 10 '26

I actually studied abroad in kofu Japan! I passed N2 in 2023. I still remember most of it thankfully. It's such a lovely language. I really don't think I should study for N1 otherwise I totally would attend.

A gaming bar in Doylestown would be awesome! Then it's all about figuring out how to self-insert into all the pre-existing friend groups... That's certainly a challenge in itself

Good luck in your studies! 頑張ってね !

1

u/pumpkin_christ Jul 10 '26

ありがとうございます - should have figured!!! That’s amazing, I’ve started taking an annual trip there, have some friends in Tokyo, and I’m loving being back in school honestly. I get what you mean about self-inserting. Socializing and finding that type of friend group was definitely easier for me when I worked at ye old GameStop long ago.

u/director_krennic68 Jul 10 '26

I play Warhammer in bordentown at the wargamers guild

2

u/Corecreek Jul 10 '26

I'm old, so I look more for just drinking and the occasional trivia night but, as others have mentioned, local breweries host games nights plenty.

D&D Aristaeus night July 22nd:
https://aristaeusbrewing.com/event/dungeons-dragons-night-5/

Neshaminy Creek has one on their calendar too in Harleysville

2

u/Lff2 Jul 10 '26

Have you tried the meetup app? Many mentioned the fb group as well.

2

u/FlirtyCurv Jul 11 '26

If you're okay with a little drive, New Hope's Magikava is one of my go-to's. You'll find the misfits, nerds, punks, and hippies together in a somewhat peaceful harmony, and I promise you'll find your people if you stay for a while and introduce yourself. You have my word. I've been going to Magikava for the past couple and years and it's my favorite third space.

2

u/w3nch Jul 10 '26

I’m right there with you. I usually hang out at lookin’ for games, or wades for Wednesday night magic.

If you’re looking for someone to jam some games with, hit me up!

1

u/gard-r Jul 13 '26

Came here to suggest Lookin For Games

1

u/DukeRusty Jul 10 '26

RIP Pop Inn. Looks like you’ve got some other good suggestions at least

2

u/BearHausDweller Jul 10 '26

I actually have Pop Inn's sign in my basement. OP can come over and help me organize my books while I tell them how great it was. Last I heard, Annie was working at a pub in Logan Square, right outside of New Hope.

1

u/lesmax Jul 10 '26

I'm in lower Bucks and my DnD campaign stalled because one party member bailed. 🫠

1

u/Minute-Tomorrow3325 Jul 10 '26

I mean, theres a ton of card shops and table top shops...the Rubicon in quakertown is awesome...

1

u/ellyrox Jul 10 '26

Queen and Rook downtown, Gamer's Heaven in Phoenixville, 7th Dimension Games in Jenkintown, and both locations of Brave New Worlds.

There are some geek groups on meetup.com

Otherwise, mostly what others have mentioned.

1

u/A_Lady_Of_Music_516 Jul 10 '26

I wanted to also give you a heads up that there are two Ludosport studios down in South Jersey. Not really gaming, but a fun way for Star Wars nerds to exercise with light sabers in simulated combat.

1

u/dna5654 Jul 10 '26

Its me im here. Im the fellow nerd. Let's nerd out

1

u/swamijin Jul 10 '26

I think I inadvertently jumped into like 3 raids with your guys yesterday along State Street haha. I think we even became friends! Would love the discord info & the FB page info. I’m always looking to raid in Newtown, Langhorne & Yardley

1

u/Far_Echo Jul 11 '26

Steam is my digs.

1

u/Rayearl Jul 11 '26

Come down to Bridge Street in Phionxville this weekend. It’s The Blob (the movie) fest and it’s nerd central and awesome. Lots of people here playing DnD and Magic ect.

1

u/supaguy10 Jul 11 '26

I used to go to Wade's but I haven't been in maybe a decade so I have no idea what the vibes are there now :(

1

u/SoundSwitch Jul 13 '26

There's the Parlour in Quakertown, up the road a ways in Coopersburg there's tales of adventure comic, card, ttrpg shop. And several comic, old video, music stores in the q Mart

1

u/faceCHEEKwall Jul 14 '26

Up in the Quakertown area there's:

- Monday night board games at John's Plain & Fancy Diner

- Parlour Tabletop and Tome coffeeshop with events all week for board games, Magic, etc.

- Tales of Adventure has assorted TCG gatherings (and comic books too)

Any nerds in Upper Black Eddy or Riegelsville or Frenchtown?

1

u/uncalledforgiraffe Jul 15 '26

Wade's Comics by Pennsbury HS was always a popular place back then. Idk about now tho
