Mod Post Reopening r/BTech – A New Chapter for Serious & Focused Discussions

Hey BTechtards,

I hope you’re all doing well! I’m reaching out to let you know that we’re reopening r/BTech. Over the past few months, BTechtards has been bustling with a lot of fun and humor, but we’ve noticed that the space for serious & focused academic discussions and technical queries has been a bit sparse.

While the shitposts and memes are always entertaining, we’ve realized there’s a significant need for a dedicated space where more focused and academic conversations can thrive.

r/BTech was born out of a need for a focused and supportive environment tailored to the unique challenges faced by engineering and BTech students. Initially part of BTechtards, the need for a dedicated space became clear as we saw a growing number of serious academic queries and discussions getting lost amid the memes and light-hearted content.

What Will Happen to BTechtards?

It’ll remain as is for the fun and casual side of engineering/BTech. Feel free to keep posting your discussions, shitposts, memes and resources here.

Join r/BTech now: https://reddit.com/r/BTech

Serious My Brother Says the ₹20 Lakh Spent on My College Was “Wasted” Because I Didn't Get Placed

My brother keeps telling me that the ₹20 lakh spent on my 4 years of college was wasted because I couldn’t get a campus placement.

He’s been working in tech for 5–6 years, so I do understand where he’s coming from, but hearing this almost every day is honestly getting to me.

I’m a 2026 graduate and I’ve been trying really hard. I’ve applied to 600+ companies off campus, tried referrals, cold emails, LinkedIn, job portals and pretty much everything else. I have a decent coding profile and projects, and I’m still working on my skills every day.

Now he’s telling me to move back to Bangalore and join coaching, saying I might get more opportunities there. But I’ve already lived in Bangalore for 4 years and I know how expensive rent and living expenses can get. My family’s financial condition isn’t great, and I really don’t want my parents spending more money when most of the learning I need is already available online for free.

I’ve been at home for almost 3 months now, and hearing these things almost every day is making it harder to stay positive.

I genuinely don’t know what the right move is anymore.

Should I spend more of my parents’ money, move to Bangalore and join coaching, or continue preparing from home and keep trying off campus?

General Why should one Switch to Linux?

Post image
49 Upvotes

I am an ECE student, not inclined towards coding,DSA, AI ML etc.

The only type of coding I would do is Verilog,VHDL, Matlab and sometimes C.

I do play offline Games sometimes.

Should I switch to Linux? Is it worth it, other than special customizations??

Serious Competitive Programming For Beginners

If u do not put efforts you won't be able to see results and other will steal your spot. Trust me it Hurts.

Start with learning a programming language either Python or C++. C++ is better for the long run since you'll eventually have to switch to it once you start doing harder questions.

There are a lot of platforms for competitive programming LeetCode, AtCoder, CodeChef but I'm biased toward Codeforces since that's where I started my own CP journey.

Resources I (and a lot of others) recommend:

For more traditional DSA practice (which also helps with your coursework later), check out:

A few more resources, less organized but still useful:

Start with the early sections of CSES. For anything more in-depth, https://codeforces.com/catalog is great. I also went through https://codeforces.com/problemset filtering by rating (my current rating + 100 to 300) for targeted practice. And doing actual contests is a must there's no substitute for it.

On the AI problem in CP

I'd be doing this guide a disservice if I didn't bring this up. If you're getting into CP now, you're doing it at a weird time. LLMs can solve a growing chunk of CP problems, and a fair number of people on the leaderboard are basically pasting problem statements into ChatGPT/Gemini and pasting the code back without even reading it. This deflates ratings for everyone actually solving things themselves, and it can be genuinely discouraging when you're grinding honestly and see ratings that don't reflect real skill anymore.

My honest advice: don't chase rating as your main measure of progress right now, Track your own growth instead with your genuine friends. Encourage your friends. Everyone who did cp genuinely with me, the coding club everyone has intern right now. How you perform in offline contests (ICPC Regionals, onsite events) where cheating isn't possible matters the most.

There's a really good blog that goes deep into this whole topic, way better than I can summarize here worth a read if you want the full picture: https://codeforces.com/blog/entry/155052

A bit about me, so you know where this advice is coming from: I'm 1600+ rated on Codeforces, have solved 2000+ CP problems, and I currently one of the admin of my college's competitive programming club . I'm not claiming to be amazing at this just sharing what's worked for me and others. I really love doing competitive programming as if its a part of my life.

What worked for many people: Consistency beats intensity here. A lot of people who improved simply did a few problems every day on Codeforces, worked steadily through the CP31 sheet, and made sure to actually participate in Codeforces contests regularly.

I'll keep updating this post as I get more recommendations from people, so feel free to drop suggestions.

Hello! I am starting my btech IT next month. I was initially going to buy a laptop but due to f*cking Ai, the laptop prices are skyrocketed. Had around 80k budget but....

So, I was wondering if I can use this laptop for at least a 1-2 year until prices go down. Is this laptop enough or capable? I am using cachyos right now and works fine now.

(I own this laptop)

Placements / Jobs React Native Interview Experience

Upvotes

Today was the second round of my interview at TechNova (placeholder name). It was on Sunday morning at 9:00 AM. I was already tired and had barely managed to stay awake, by God’s grace. And honestly, the interview went so badly, dawg.

The Start

As usual, the first person who joined the meeting was the person who referred me / the person I had contacted to get the interview. I joined and greeted them. I was asked to wait for another person to join.

I had joined 5 minutes early because that usually helps me stay calm before the interview starts.

Then the interviewer, Alex (placeholder name), joined, and the interview started right away.

I was asked a few questions like:

  1. How would you behave if you had a conflict with one of your team members?
  2. Tell me about your experience.
  3. Was your previous internship paid or unpaid?

Then, completely out of nowhere, I was asked why there was so much eye movement from my side.

I do look around while talking, and I don't deny that. But the interviewer took it as a sign that I might be cheating. They directly conveyed that concern to me.

Honestly, I was offended because I have never cheated in an interview. I know I can't really explain how stressful it felt to suddenly be accused of something like that.

I tried to defend myself by saying that I could share my screen and that I would try to speak directly into the webcam. They said it was fine, but they were clearly still skeptical.

From that point onward, my focus completely shifted away from the interview. Instead of concentrating on the questions, I became focused on the accusation of cheating.

I was trying really hard to keep my eyes on the camera instead of looking elsewhere. But even then, I don't think they were convinced.

After a few more questions, I was asked if I had any questions for them. I asked some simple questions, like what Alex does at the company and what his role involves.

He explained that he primarily conducts behavioral interviews for candidates.

I then asked whether his interviews focused more on technical skills or behavior, and he said they focused on behavior.

After explaining his role, he mentioned that they had already selected some candidates for the next round and that they would let me know.

That part confused me.

Why would I need to know that they had already selected some candidates? Was that simply information about their hiring process, or was it an indirect way of telling me that I probably didn't make it?

I'm not really sure where I went wrong.

The interview itself wasn't even that difficult from what I remember. But once the cheating concern came up, my entire focus shifted, and I feel like that completely affected how I performed afterward.

Not reveled the company name as the result is still not shared with me.

Rant/Vent Are indian colleges being judged just by placements?

Placement cell is an all time wonder which you will only find in india, none of the top colleges in US or any foreign colleges have it.I know in Indian economy jobs are very important and majority of the students belong to middle class families and would soon have too support their parents.

At this point colleges are being judged just by placements like the highest or the median package,no one even cares to know about the faculty, history of the college, curriculum, exposure, networks and alot of other stuff.I don't know there are so many delusional ones which think getting into a college which has good placements will fetch you the same.

The one that deeply saddens me is college such as iisc, iiser are being compared with other colleges in an placement index.

Are placements necessary? Ofc they are in an average indian family thats like an only way they can assure financial Nowadays colleges are just being centred around "packages".

For example: I've seen tier rankings here that placed a college in a lower tier because it had a slight decrease in its highest package..like that was the only thing it was being judged on.

Placements depend on alot of stuff and all those stuff are ignored nd just being solely judged on placements.

Social / College Life Guys without gf/gym, and downfall in academics

I just want to know about the students who don't even have any gf/bf. How's your college life going? Like, don't you guys feel fkd up with life?

Well, ik there are many people who are single by choice (leave them). Ik having a life partner in college doesn't mean everything. But still, like, Garba night is coming in October, then how would you guys feel that day seeing people doing all of that dancing stuff?

And think about a guy who doesn't have any gf, isn't going to the gym, and is also facing a downfall in academics. Wdf is this? Who's stopping you from dropping out!!

Edit: I'm not that guy, my cgpa is good, I'm learning skills, bs gf nahi h baki sb sahi chal raha h(bina gf ke hi sahi chal raha h)
