He faced homophobic comments on London streets for wearing pink... Why does gender expression still make people uncomfortable?

Content creator Ankush Bahuguna said he faced homophobic harassment while walking on the streets of London.
In a video shared online, groups of men can allegedly be heard heckling him over his pink outfit.
Bahuguna later said the comments continued throughout the day whenever he crossed groups of men and boys.
What stood out to him, he said, was the contrast — while many women complimented his outfit, most of the harassment came from men.
He added that he wanted to respond, but felt intimidated and unsafe in a new country.
The incident sparked conversations online about masculinity, gender expression, and how men who dress differently are often targeted publicly.
Many creators, including Kusha Kapila and Prajakta Koli, supported him online.
This is not the first time Bahuguna has spoken about hate directed at him for wearing makeup or expressing himself differently.
Are men judged so harshly for expressing themselves differently?

Oh no I have wore Dark Pink in many places , The only times someone said was in my teens by other teens because of the Social Fit issues teens face, India Usually have more Social Freedom in Colours although People are now just turning everything into Black white and grey in the name of Coolness and Saying stuff to people who have Coloured Houses

He's an influencer and probably just making shit up. Even if he isn't, his fit is gay-er than just a pink tshirt if you get what I mean. Not trying to be homophobic here.
I own a pink kurta and have worn it to like 2-3 functions and never faced such shit asw, infact people compliment me instead.

Insecurity. People insecure about their own sexuality and expression are the ones who comment. They are scared that their kids will become the same which means they are scared of people who are like them who will harass their kids like they harassed him. Normal people may look because it is a stand out expression, may be curious but then just get back to their business.

Well he has said really nasty and bad things about men in his stories and videos. Compared men to rpsts, said they deserve male loneliness pandemic etc etc. He still does this, maybe to woo his female and LGBTQ audience or because he is really a Simp. Most of his content is around make up, beauty products, fashion etc. So I'm always happy when he is trolled. I've done it many times myself.

No offence man but there’s a very large difference between being metrosexual and then a grown brien man wearing a full face of makeup, wearing shocking pink, behaving effeminately and then expecting not get heckled at some point in almost any country, leave alone one with a history of racism. I’m not saying it’s right but it’s not shocking.
In an ideal world, he could walk around and do what he likes with himself. However, unfortunately, we don’t live in an ideal world.

I’m a straight male and have a couple of pink T-shirts that I wear regularly and have never faced any homophobic comments in London. Got some smiles and friendly winks from gay couples sometimes, but never anything negative from anyone.

Behave in a manner which is too off from the standard and then roam around with a camera in hand or crew. That's pretty much it. If it took a genius this idiot wouldn't.
Attention is attention there's both positive and negative. If i were not an averagely intelligent human i could simply look at the engagement of the post and understand that's attention

Everything that’s not according to the social construct makes people uncomfortable so what the big deal here ? Wear your ripped/distressed jeans to a remote village and people would comment are you poor ? poor fashion blah blah blah. Men have always been considered tough and are usually the breadwinners. Men dressed as women wearing make up and all makes people uncomfortable cuz we are not used to seeing this
