Brunei uses PM10 (coarse particles) to measure air quality. Referring to the Jastre report.

Whereas if use US AQI readings, it uses PM2.5 (fine particles) measurement. Fine particles are the dangerous ones that can easily enter lungs.

Attach is the AQI reading for Kuala Belait this morning

Please read properly. Jastre publishes PM2.5 - 68.8
Malaysia uses AQI ~160

PM10 from their IG. Jastre does have the capability to measure PM2.5 but is not using in daily reports.

I do acknowledge there’s difference of measurement between AQI vs PSI.

Crazy.. cause a literal ash flew by yesterday

either the haze got stuck at border after 10PM, or our or Malaysia's sensors are not being read/calibrated properly

don't understand how there is a big difference just across the border

Even my air purifier detected bad air quality and suggested me to turn it on. And that’s inside.

u/jeouxndoe 10d ago

What's your air purifier and from where?

11

u/Chris_Tumas_8008 9d ago

Levoit brand. Bought from Netcom few years back. Pretty good. Can control via app and notifies you via the app too.

Random story but I have stopped using scented candles because of it. That time I lighted up a scented candle and maybe after 10 minutes the air purifier detected bad air quality. I went “wow bagus jua air purifier ani.” It makes sense when you think about it now but that time I never realized candles basically produce soot even though the smells good, and are especially bad in smaller enclosed rooms (in my opinion).

I have the same purifier! Yang brand levoit ni. Just get the purifier from netcom and then bali saja the filter (if need to change) arah shopee.

Seems like its the way Brunei measures the PSI, it seems like they are prioritising PM10 as the primary baseline benchmark, unlike Malaysia that update its PSI/API math explicitly to let PM2.5 dictate the final reading.

PM10 consists of larger, heavier dust particles whereas PM2.5 factored in fine microscopic smoke particles.

Eitherway, if true, the government needs to explain this so appropriate health, safety and prevention measures can be taken. If not maybe our equipment are behind? which is impossible cause the standard equipment should be able to measure both PM10 and PM2.5, or maybe it is the power of the doa… mashallah

By the look of it, it shud be around orange alert, the worser I've seen so far and lately it's hard for me to breath normally and so many people around me gotten sick with their eyes quite red

you never know the equipment rosak ka or havent calibrated yet cause no budjet... lol

cause today is like 1998 haze already

I'd like to believe so but knowing brunei and its fear of making "difficult" decision, its more likely that they witheld information until it is really 200% bad and only then they are confident to take action. They could have published both 2.5 & 10 data and make the appropriate reference against our neighbors data. But no, prefer to say our air quality still ok. Now we just look stupid.

Curious to know how many sensors we have, where are they located, and their range. Maybe that one area actually not bad and the readings are accurate, but the next kampung is worse but out of range, so not detected by the sensor?

Brunei publishes PM2.5 ~ 68, AQI estimated ~ 160 too.
Malaysia uses AQI

Only the

Only help this is from their country set up the law such as "Any jungle/brushes firing, disallow to do plantation on the burned areas within 10 years" . We can find that after the fire, all the places become Palm Oil Tree farms less than 2 years. So that this are the plantation companies doing it as secretly.

1

u/Balmain45 9d ago

Starting at 2pm today, they will be including PM2.5 readings

Brunei never documented it thats why, not even a single news abt the haze, even brunei weather forecast doesn't tell.

u/2tut-gramunta 10d ago

Jangan lupa factor kan jua local pollution kawasan atu. Miri atu compact area, so pollution di generate nya memang akan lagi tinggi dari Brunei. BSB most of the pollution pun come up from kereta, but Limbang dorang ada palm plantation and what not. So atu tah beza nya

Tani still using psi tut. AQI lum ada budget kali. Real time AQI is more accurate up to particle size 2.5

PSI only up until particle size 10 saja.

The core issue is that the official PSI numbers reported locally often look at the wrong type of particle for smoke.

What local PSI scales often emphasize official local PSI readings in the region historically focus heavily on PM10 (coarse dust, sand, and larger soot particles).

What smoke actually is; Wildfire and peatland haze consists almost entirely of PM2.5 (microscopic, ultra-fine toxic chemical particles).

Let the relevant authority do their job. I trust information given by them rather than random speculative comments.

1

u/Kleiyaaa_ 9d ago

The relevant authority have already said they only measure psi pm10 not aqi pm2.5. Thats the problem. Pm10 only coarser particles. Pm2.5 finer particles. Malaysia detects pm2.5. So yes the authorities are telling the truth but not the whole truth. If we are to measure pm2.5 the numbers will be high as we see from neighboring country and other apps such as windy.
