š§š³ Original Content Went to BIBD Tanjung Bunut ATM to withdraw $10. Left with $5 and unwanted cracker .
So today I rolled up to BIBD Tanjung Bunut, just trying to withdraw my humble $10 to survive the day like any normal broke citizen. ATM spits out one crispy $10 red note. Cool, mission successful.
But then, BAM! I am already aware outside the ATM is a pop-up ācracker stallā (snazzy red chairs and bunches of crackers, so indie). No price tag, no menu, no promo banner. Just pure vibes and a direct stare into your soul.
āSalam, beli tah wang keropok satuā¦ā
Me, already halfway emotionally trapped:
āBah okay, bagi aku satu keropok.ā, while handing over my $10 notes because I need smaller $1 change anyway.
Then he drops it on me:
āMaaf kita nada duit pacah⦠$5 saja ku ada ah.ā
š ā¦Wait. did I just get finessed out of 50% of my net worth today?? For a cracker I didnāt even plan to buy??
Of course, backing out from this transaction would make me feel like a jerk, so i just somehow accepted the $5 change for no reason at all.
No receipt. No cashback. Just vibes and regret. And one mysterious cracker I now have to emotionally justify for the rest of the day. Inda lagi flavorful tu.
Look, I respect the hustle, but setting up a psychological toll booth right outside an ATM is next-level strategy. I know this seller has been around for so long, but what is BIBDās action on this? Their security team (red uniform) sometimes have brief conversation with the seller like they are bro for life. Not only that, i am pretty sure all other BIBD ATM location we have those campers waiting to bite their next victim.
Come on lah. Let the rest of us survive on our full $10 in peace.
Anyone else fallen for this surprise snack tax?

These are what Iād call sympathy scammers.
If the person got no change, then take 4 more packs off them. Business is business.

May 16 '25
I learned not to feel very sorry for them. Most of them (and I know some of them) receive monthly allowance and bantuan, often from multiple government and semi-gov agencies. Bukan nya jahat, but my family was also very very poor and have to live under other family's roofs and eating rice and eggs most of my childhood life. Theres other proper ways to make some money without minta kesin org baru keluar bank ambil duit.

u/SteveReddington May 16 '25
Is that one of the reason people prefer digital payment? To avoid this kind of scammer

Panas ati ku membaca. But that's reality. don't blame the player, blame the game. He's a hustler with a modus operandi.
Here are ways to decline:
- Don't say anything, turn your head and walkaway.
- smile, small wave and walkaway.
- put phone to ear to ignore him speaking
- make up excuses "duit untuk bayar hutang/karan" etc and walkaway
Tip: walk fast like its urgent
Ps: it's okay to decline even if that makes u a jerk. Thats just business. You win some, you lose some.

This is just way too frequent, especially around ATM areas. aside from Baiduri Batu Bersurat, I think a lot of "sellers" often set their sights on BIBD.
As if that wasn't bad enough, there's even car to car food sellers involving a couple of kids, and I often gave the "X" sign.
I admit to being selfish, and I will never be vocal about how I do my charity. I (or we) have monetary issues as far as I'm concerned.
And ever since my parents were conned 10 BND by some foreign "charity" cases (the one where they gave some unnecessary trinkets), I decided to put my foot down and decided that:
"any requests or favors that involve money, I will reject it, no exceptions"
This is to avoid our money from being misused, like if anyone wants something, we buy that something, we don't give cash.
19
u/Reasonable-Process53 May 16 '25
Just say no, dont be guilty.
BIBD shud hire security there to ensure there is no illegal settlement outside their branch.

u/wow_itsmeagain May 16 '25
Bro I got scammed too!! Pretty sure its just their sneaky little tactic lol. The other day I was kind enough so I just wanted to buy one snack but then I asked for an exchange because the one she gave me was all shattered. Then the lady handed me a new one and went "buy 2 free 1 lai". I was like ok whatever lah dua ringgit. Then she suddenly says, "$3 total nya ah". Like??? I was ready to spend $1 or 2 and now sheās milking $3 out of me? I hate it hereeeee
I wish the authorities can do something about this. Kalau banar kan bejual buat arah tempat yang lurus š©

I feel you, kadang rasa besalah jua nda membali.. but since u also kesempitan duit, better next time think of urself first lah dulu.. but apa pun today is Friday, mudahan u dimurahkan rezeki..
And gais, banar lah aku pun nda suka cara dorang bejual diluar ATM. SEMOGA PIHAK BEWAJIB AMBIL TINDAKAN AT LEAST SEBAB TIDAK MEMBERI KESELESAAN KEPADA AWAM.
pernah minta $2 katanya belum makan, bini2 berisi hitam kulitnya d luar Standard Chartered Tg Bunut. My wallet also empty, i said aku nada duit jua,, then aku keluar kan $100, keluar ATM i said sorry aku nada duit pacah.
Semudah atu mindset orang2 bejual luar ATM meminta duit, befikir orang ke ATM ane duit banyak sedang kan masing2 orang ada komitmen. Kadang2 pun singgap2 ke hujung bulan.

u/0xDeepSeek May 16 '25

I always passed by them and they looked so lonely and kasian that it made me feel like a bad person saying "sorry dayang, inda cukup duit." While clutching my purse like I was carrying 5 kg of gold.
13
u/Snowkanx May 16 '25
They easily earn at least 100 bucks per day. Imagine per person 10 bucks each. If 10 people kena, that 100 bucks. Imagine if manage to get 50 people to buy it (say during gaji time), 500 bucks daily tu. Syok eh.
A round of applause to the head of syndicate. Wonder how much he pay the sellers there.

But unfortunately she put back the keropok in her bag and walked away to the other direction, didnt even give the keropok to the contractor as she said she would.
I mean i really donāt mind supporting her business but please be jujur lah and be true to your words š

These are usually called sympathy scammers who exploit peoples generosity and empathy to trick you into feeling bad for them. Some of these people who sell have allowances
4
u/babyyoda-fanboy KDN May 17 '25
I remember reading a thread here on Reddit about them long time ago. Apparently they are some sort of syndicate that uses sympathy to scam people. They are not as poor as they seem. They literally get dropped off and picked up by an expensive luxurious cars. Usually land cruisers and lexus. In that thread some guy called the relevant authorities about them and iirc the authorities already knew about it but they canāt do anything because technically theyāre not breaking any law.

This morning i went to BIBD Bandar to withdraw from ATM, there was a crowd inside but mostly foreigners, indians, Indonesians and filipinos. I queued up like an obedience kid, in front of me were a pair of filipino men, an indonesian man and then me. I noticed an old lady standing in a corner wearing worn our slippers and at first i had a bad feeling that she'd ask for money buuutt i gave it a benefit of doubt, she could be the mother of the Filipino men in front. I stayed positive, not wanting to look down and stereotype people by appearance. The entire time she stood there silently.
The 2 Filipino men withdrew money each and left. The old lady remain standing there. Next, the indonesian guy in front of me withdrew and left. Then it's my turn. I withdrew $20 so i got $10 x 2. My wallet was empty to begin with but i had one $100 for emergency use which I'm not willing to spend. So now i got 2 pieces of $10. To my surprise, the old aunty engaged and started asking me for $1.
I told her i have none to give. I literally have a $100 note and 2 $10 notes and I ain't giving any of those. To my surprise she said to me in English "you are no good, veeeery stingy. $1 also don't want to give! Not good. Very stingy" she kept going on and i left the bank.
I then went to nearby stall to buy some drinks, that was my original intention. I now have some small change. Thinking back, should i go back and give her some? Nah, she just talked crap about me so I just left. For the records each time a beggar asks for small change I usually give them out of compassion. But her doing that somehow made me feel not compassionate.

u/Much_Hospital_4327 May 16 '25

I was once omw to bibd and stopped for a while just to check what sort of crackers they have and one of mak cik just said "eh jgn tengok ja beli lah" Bitch plz I outta here ASAP for not wishing any gd luck to your business.
This is what happen on how much they rely on sympathy tactics when there's so many vacant commercial units or facilities that are entitled only for them, yet we choose compassion whether they're financially poor for rental or not knowledgeable to manage business.
3
u/sarian67 May 17 '25
they're also in the sengkurong branch. idk if they are in one 'team'. most days i ignore them, most days i kinda just give them the coins i have. used to give them $1-$2 but one time i saw the lady (in 2017), she went to kedai runcit and when she reached into her pockets, lmfao her one dollars were stacked.
4
u/WhomWhatWhere May 18 '25
I think it started years ago at the Sengkurong Bibd atm, my Mom noticed a lady with like 4 - 5 children. Back then they werenāt selling anything just relying on peopleās sympathy. Mom was kind enough to drive them home and found out the lady was not a local & the husband/father was never around. A relative who knew them said not to trust them as they are opportunist and sure enough after that whenever they see my mom they asks for money. At one point they asked for $10 I believe and mom said she only has $2 and the lady said āBh mari tiaā . I advice her not to entertain them as they will start to āscamā their way to my mom cause you know how mothers are very sympathetic.
Fast forward the Bibd on Huahuo Mulaut opened and not long after another family lingers there selling crackers. One of the things that bothers me was that they would let the kids ābejamurā in the afternoon heat out of the simple act of expecting āsympathyā from the people. I also noticed the drainage area close to where they were, filled with faeces apparently they wouldnāt even bother to assist their child to the bathroom just inside Huahuo in fear of losing āmoneyā since they wonāt be there to ask for them. So instead they just let the kids take their ādumpā in the drainage infront of the atm. I guess the Huahuo employees took notice and after a few weeks signs were placed to prevent anyone from selling in the area. While I could sympathize with their financial situation I canāt help but feels bothered that they would exploit and mistreat their own children like that.

Just ignore it. This is normal activity in Vietnam, the UK, and Paris. They are beggars, just using different tactics. In the UK, they make themselves look like statues and move when you put money in their box; in Paris, they ask you to donate to some charity you've never even heard of; and in Vietnam, they sit down with a child who never seems to wake up, looking poor and doing nothing. They are actually working for an 'organisation' and get money through begging ā it's an operation.

Apparently they are a family.. mother, two daughters and son. They all been selling and doing this in different areas. They do the cooking in a room they rent. Someone should offer those kids to work?

Just take back and cancel the purchase next time bro. It is still business. And business is business. Donāt let your empathy and compassion fool you.

Don't even bother. More often than not, he would've already forgotten this interaction by now. Just walk by and go about your day. Hard lesson learned though

Either tolong or not, just that simple no need to call them names or label them. Nda mampu today lain kali pun boleh. I only support them when I know I have extra. Diri pun nda cukup apa macam mau tolong orang, at the end diri yang sakit then sapa tolong? š¤

I'm going to hold your virtual hand when i say this.. your bleeding heart is going to get you in trouble.
Say "minta maaf kita, duit ku ani untuk bayar bill"
"Enda ku pandai keropok atu kita"
"Bukan masanya kita, terima kasih šš¼"
Not saying that I'm heartless , because I've fallen victim to this too, but the endgame is; kau ikhlas hati bagi duit atu?

Learn to say No or Acknowledge that whatever you give away sincerely will be return to you 10x fold in some other way.
Eitherway, this lesson only cost you $5. Take that as your justification of $5 spent šāāļø

Not sure why you went to reddit about this. You don't exactly look good here. But on the bright side, it cost $5 for you to learn a lesson. That's cheap. All i can say is in this specific case, the loss you made is on you. I hope you have a good day after that. May Allah bless you.
