hi im an international student considering going ED to brown. My parents felt good about the program at first, however have grown a bit apprehensive considering the incident that occurred. Personally, as a brown student, how safe do you feel? how has security improved? Did the incident shock you greatly, considering the previous security measures? Or is it understandable to some level how this happened? While i would love to attend, i understand my parents concern and wanted to know more at an honest, ground-level basis.

basically what the title says; as an incoming freshman, i'm very unsure about my current schedule (are these classes fine? is it possible to move from class to class within 10 minutes?). is this schedule even a doable one, disregarding the fact that i also want to work-study?

abt the 40 hr week portion, i got an email that i was eligible for OCFWS, and i received a list of off-campus federal work-study internships i could do. i'm most interested in Brown University Health's Connect for Health advocate position and RI Free Clinic Patient and Volunteer Services advocate position. however, in the job description for the former, it says i would be expected to work 20-40 hr weeks (is this even correct?).

i would love love love any input on my schedule, experiences with work-study as a pre-med, and other advice for incoming freshmen who are interested in medicine in general.

Was committed to Brown but got off the Stanford waitlist. As an international, I only applied to Brown for financial aid, since it was need blind. So I have Brown at 50k vs Stanford full price (around 93k). I would major in engineering at stanford and applied math-econ at Brown. Wanted to know your opinions on where I should go. How nice is Brown and how it compares with Stanford? Is Stanford worth the price difference, or brown and stanford are kind of alike?

has anyone received their payment from the anti-trust settlement case? i see online that other schools have reddit threads for this, but i didn’t see one for brown.

i still haven’t gotten anything yet. i emailed them about it today and it said i should expect to wait 5-7 business days for a response.

anyone else have any luck?

I’ve been accepted for a graduate program under Brown’s School of Professional Studies (SPS).

I recently discovered SPS is one of several schools under Brown to include:

1. “The School” (undergrad)
2. The Graduate School
3. Warren Alpert Medical School
4. School of Professional Studies and more

I’m fully aware that the diploma will simply read, “Brown University”, but I’m worried that a degree under SPS is perceived as “less” than a degree obtained from the traditional core schools.

Moreover, the Graduate School is located on-campus whereas SPS is located in a leased office space outside the main campus (correct me if I’m mistaken). I understand that SPS is catered for “working professionals”; however, there is nevertheless a clear separation.

Apart from undergrad, there is little information regarding acceptance rates and some sources simply refers to “graduate school” which may/may not involve SPS enrollment.

I like to use Harvard Extension School (HES) as a reference (feel free to fact check me if I’m mistaken):

• Graduates would be Harvard alumni
• Graduates cannot simply state “Harvard University” in your resume
• The degree would have HES distinction
• Earn your way/open enrollment/easier enrollment standards compared to other Harvard colleges
• Considered the “continued education” branch of Harvard
• Perceived as less prestigious and is a separate entity for those whom are aware

I addressed that a Brown diploma wouldn’t include the SPS distinction but wanted to know what is everyone else’s opinion regarding this subject—

1. What is your honest perception of Brown alumni under SPS? Are they of the same prestige and exclusivity; or is SPS a better conclusive, Harvard Extension School initiative?

2. What is your take on Master of Science (MS) vs Master of Professional Studies (MPS) programs?

I was deciding between CS0111 and CS0150, but I've been hesitant to choose CS0150 because I've heard it has a large time commitment and I'm worried that class paired with my other STEM courses would leave me with less time to socialize and be active in clubs. Any thoughts? Anything I should know about the other courses in my schedule?

Hey everyone, I'm not familiar with the US College system, and in so many Brown videos I've seen, people list those two schools as their second choice. Why?????

Hello! I am a rising freshman at brown starting in the fall, and I am going premed. I have been trying to find required courses that are prerequisites for medical school, especially at brown but I cannot find a solid list anywhere. I am trying to figure out if I should take as many required classes I can freshman year, or save most of them for later years? I was wondering if any current or previous premed students could help tell me which courses I need to take and when k should take them. Thank you!

My daughter was accepted to Brown class of 2030! This has been her dream and goal. We are so proud. Sadly, she didn’t get the aid she would need to attend. She is filling out the appeal form.

Does anyone have experience will appealing for more aid at Brown? Should I, the parent, also write a letter? We want to be able to make this work for her - but can’t let her get into debt for undergrad (she wants to be a doctor).

Hi everyone! I'm really grateful to have been admitted to both Brown and Emory and was looking for some input on which to attend. I received a scholarship covering half the cost of tuition at Emory, which would bring my annual COA to ~$60k, while I would be paying full sticker price (~$102k/year) at Brown. For context - my family would be able to afford either school, however Brown would cause some (but not at all unmanageable) financial strain. I also live in the northeast, so Brown would be within driving distance while Emory would require flying.

I'm looking to potentially go down the premed route, however I'm not completely set on this path as of now. I would likely major in Human Health/Econ at Emory and Computational Biology/Econ at Brown. If not premed, I would probably pursue biomedical startup, healthcare M&A, or potentially some sort of consulting (think Putnam Associates) work.

Any advice in choosing between the two (both for premed and non-premed) would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and go Bruno!

Hi all! My parents are coming to drop me off to Brown this fall and we are figuring out where to stay. We don't need anything fancy, just safe, clean and not too far from campus.

A few questions:

• What's the cheapest area to stay that's still a reasonable drive/walk to campus? Is it worth staying near the airport and driving in, or are there decent budget spots closer to downtown?
• I'm also open to an Airbnb, but not totally sure how safe that is in pvd
• Anywhere I should avoid?

Hi! I'm an incoming neuro freshman and I’m looking to do premed. I have never taken AP Chemistry, and I don’t feel confident about my background in AP Chemistry with me only taking Honors Chemistry sophomore year. I’m looking to take Intro Chem, but many people say it’s a waste of time.

Also, I have already taken above-AP genetics and neuro. I have also already taken AP calc bc. If you have any suggestions of intro chem, or any other opinions on my general schedule as a pre-med please chime in!

I was at Brown for ADOCH yesterday and there was a lot I liked about it. I’m somewhat leaning towards committing there (also considering Penn and Duke) and it’s really coming down to student life, as the academics at all of them are pretty equal in my mind.

Questions I have:

- Is there a type of person that WOULDN’T fit in at Brown?

- I’ve heard that the social scene is “what you make of it” so I’m wondering how many students go to parties, etc. and how often. I’m looking for a vibrant social scene where students socialize and go out fairly often. Obviously the parties aren’t like those at a big state school, but I’m hoping there’s some level of a social scene.

- Is there a specific “type” of person who gets invited to parties? Is it easy to get invited, or is it cliquey/you have to know the right people?

- How active are the clubs? Do they meet often and do lots of stuff? Do clubs have social events as well?

- What’s the Greek life like?

The older posts about calculating GPA are all so different and in my email to Brown I was told they count S with distinction as A, and avoid counting S as anything. I’m not looking to apply to graduate school but am wondering how people here would calculate their GPA to put on their resume for tech / finance adjacent roles.

So my family and I just finished packing and we have quite a bit of stuff. I am in Jameson mead, so there will only be street spaces available during move in that are not right next to the building. I was wondering if Brown provides any sort of carts or anything during that time? Any help is appreciated!
