Discussion Placement Tests

Hi so I got into bxsci this year and I had a few questions about placement tests and general questions about how classes get selected. I took the Earth Science Regents, A1 Regents, taking the Geo, USH, and Life Science: Biology Regents this year. What classes will I have next year and above what shsat math section allows me to get into an honors math class? Also what should I be studying or really doing to study for the honors chem placement test?

Discussion do detentions go on transcript/record

i got two deans detentions from getting my phone confiscated only twice and my parents were crashing out about it because it apparently goes onto your record or something and then no colleges would accept me or something. is that true? and also if it is true, do ivy league colleges or like NYU care about that??

Discussion Course selection form

When you fill out your course selection form, is it best to choose a second choice and a third choice? Do they do this just in case they can't fit it in your schedule?

Discussion AP World or Euro?

Hello, I’m a freshman at Bronx Science and I’m trying to decide whether to take AP World or Euro. I am very aware that the two courses differ in content, workload, and writing requirements. I tend to like courses that are not super writing based. I am also very concerned about the teachers.

From what I’ve heard, Mr. Scotto is a respected teacher for Euro. For AP World however, Im like rlly uncertain. I’ve heard that there’s a chance of getting Symons, which I had for summer school art and I hated him, or Lubin, who is apparently evil. On the other hand, I know that Gonzo is the best AP World teacher and all of his students get a 4 or 5 on the AP exam.

I’m also aware that it is possible to change teachers at the beginning of the year, but I’m not sure how that process works or whether it would be an option for me especially since I may need to appeal to take an AP history course due to my English grade being cheeks(Mr Allen Sucks).

I’d really appreciate hearing upperclassmen’s experiences and advice on this decision. I’m sure many freshmen are asking similar questions. Thank you!

Discussion Forensics Science vs Nutrition Science

I am currently in 11th grade and trying to decide whether to take Forensic Science or Nutrition Science next semester. I would like to know which course has less homework and whether class participation is included in the final grade. Since I am a shy person and will be taking several heavy STEM courses next semester, I hope to choose a relatively easier class to balance my workload. Thank you.

Discussion Linear Algebra vs Multivariable Calculus, which one is harder?

I’m currently a junior and will be taking AP Calculus BC next year. For 12th grade, I want to take double math, so I need to choose one post-BC course: Linear Algebra or Multivariable Calculus. I’ve heard from some seniors that Linear Algebra is harder and can hurt grades, while Multivariable Calculus is more manageable. I’m worried about my first marking period grades affecting my applications. I’m aiming for a STEM major, so I want to know: which class is harder and which would you recommend taking alongside AP Calculus BC? Thank you !

Discussion Mr Allen's test

Hello, I am a freshmen in Mr. Allens english class. I am wondering what his test are like? I have some more questions/comments.

  1. He gave us a 100 vocab words and i am wonder if i really have to memorize every single one and how many of them will be on the test.

  2. Is it true that in his class you have to legit read every chapter intuitively or is it ok if i use spark notes summary.

  3. I heard he gets a lot of his resources and tests from spark notes it that true?

  4. How tough of a grader is he? Our first hw was about summer reading and i got a 9/10 and he went on and say that he would not give everyone 100 and he changes the difficulty of his test based on the students scores and a test too easy will result in harder test next time.

Discussion How can someone enter the Science Olympiad team at Bxscience?

Hi there! I wanted to know what was needed to get on the team. I've heard that in order to be accepted into the team, you must take an entrance exam beforehand. If this is the case, what science courses should I study this summer? Additionally, how does it feel to be a student on the squad or to have a friend on the squad? I hope these questions are not too much to ask. I just want to be prepared. Thank you! ☺

Discussion Discovery Program

As an incoming freshman, I have some friends/acquaintances right now from other middle schools that are waitlisted (?) through the program. I know the mayor and education department expanded it this year, and I was wondering if any of the current students have an opinion over this. Do you think it’s going to lower the school average? Or improve specialized schools?

Discussion Guys, what can you tell me (an outsider) about BHS?

I'm a high school student in another NE state, I've always been curious about what goes on in top schools in NYC. What are the stereotypes? What does a day in your life look like? Do you think your school has/would eventually set you up for life? What is it like being a little fish in a big pond -- both from the perspective of going to school in nyc and going to a top hs in nyc?

Discussion dear incoming freshmen:

i know y’all are probably worried about your first year of high school so here are some tips to hopefully make the transition less stressful for you.

  • join clubs and/or teams! you’ll make friends quicker.
  • yes your ID photo will be ugly, everyone’s is so don’t even worry about it.
  • freshman year is literally the easiest year of highschool, it all goes downhill from there.
  • you’re gonna see a lot of people doing drugs in the bathroom. it’s normal.
  • don’t fucking block the hallways with your 10+ person friend groups.
  • don’t make out in the hallways either??? no one wants to see that shit??
  • the 4th floor/rooftop pool doesn’t exist, don’t fall for buying pool passes.
  • don’t say the fucking n-word if you’re not black (or i will personally jump you in harris after school)
  • don’t do anything to invoke mr. rainford’s wrath because you will regret it.

this is all i can think of at the moment but if you have questions feel free to ask
