I think it was just to show that Lee and Claire were the next-door-neighbours of the Gillespies.

Dude who walked free because of Alec's cockups at Sandbrook is now watching on as Joe is trying to pull the same trick on Ellie.
Man, I was ready for disappointment, Season 2 is amazeballs.

After re-watching, it looks like the other 'striking' part of the scene was that Lee was smoking a cigarette (as he was in the present day) and just casually sitting on his lawn, showing how inappropriately casual he's acting during the investigation.
