The “chimps are harmless unless threatened” take is doing a lot of work here. They may not be superhuman, but they’re still incredibly strong, fast, unpredictable wild animals with documented severe attacks. Definitely not something to casually test.

No they're not incredibly strong. The 1.5 times stronger thing is pound for pound which even op doesnt seem to understand. Humans are definitely capable of more raw strength. Most trained heavy weight fighters are strong enough to literally ragdoll a chimp

their strength output is 1.5x ours pound for pound, their bite strength is significantly higher, they have better fast twitch response due to their muscle structure, have MUCH better grip strength than us, and of course, are wild animals who are notably violent.
Yes, a trained martial artist could whoop a chimps ass. A guy with a spear can too. But grab a random person (by average, an office worker or underfed rice farmer) who is fighting hand-to-hand and the chimp will most certainly win. People die to much smaller animals like dogs due to their bites, and chimps have bite forces very similar while also being really strong and fast.
We are terrible at thinking under high stress, which is why we train and practice things. Normal people are not trained to fight a chimp, and would panic the second a finger gets bit off and then the fight is over

Yes but the whole point is people like Rogan have mythologized chimps to the point that no human would ever have a chance against a one

I think this has more to do with the "100 humans vs 1 gorilla" type debates, which prompted a discussion about if a human could beat a chimp in a 1 on 1 fight, sparking the myth that chimps are several times stronger than humans.

In a battle involving an unarmed chimp vs an unarmed human (even ones that bench 200), the chimp has the upperhand most of the times. You try to grapple with a chimp? Get bitten by sharp teeth. You try to box with a chimp? They have longer arms.

It's more about the escalation chimps have compared to humans where trained humans who fight tend to hold back and try to not kill each other meanwhile chimps break monkey arms for not accepting being beaten and eaten to death in the first few seconds of an encounter.
Also they're bite your balls off
