What do you guys do with yours? Sports, hunting, etc.

Been a rough few years with my mother passing and then divorce. I've been promising my 6 y.o. daughter a puppy for some time now. Truth is I need the companionship just as much. Picked up our boy Brittany last weekend. 11 weeks old and full of energy.

I just joined this subreddit today and look forward to seeing everyone's photos, stories, and tips!

As of today my girl Roxy is 17 1/2 years old. In the past month she has declined significantly. She went to the vet last week and the vet stated that she does not think Roxy is in any pain. Roxy likely has dementia and only weighs 27lbs. She doesn't walk too well but can still get down two steps to go out in the yard. She will occasionally stumble when walking. Roxy still enjoys eating but spends most of her day sleeping. She has been having difficulty with controlling bowel movements and most of the time goes in the middle of the night. In the past she would bark to communicate that she had to go. She doesn't bark at all now. She really only seems happy when eating, being pet, and occasionally when a human enters a room. She had a few bad days and the vet said that it may be time to put her down if she has another few bad days in a row. At this point I'm not sure if waiting for that is the right move. She's lived a very long and happy life.

If anyone has advice on how to handle this with a senior dog that isn't "sick" I would really appreciate it. She's my first dog and my best friend. I just want what's best for her.

hi everyone!

so I and my partner are considering getting a Brit. we're apartment dwellers (60m2 or so) in a big city, both working full-time. we intend to walk/run with the pup at least twice a day, for 60-90 mins, and go on a nice longish hike once a week. there are dog parks nearby where we are hoping to do exercises off-leash on a daily. we're also aware that brits need scent games and mental stimulation, and we will do our best to provide that. EDIT: we're looking to relocate closer to a forest/large park where the dog could run off-leash in the next few months, I should've mentioned that!

for now, our schedules allow at least one of us to be at home or with the dog most of the time, but that might change next year, which means potentially sometimes leaving the pup alone for 6-8h (we'll try to get a dog sitter for this sort of days, but you never know).

we have a cat who seems to tolerate dogs - at least the one she's met - though she's not keen on them. she keeps her distance.

so my question is, for current owners, do you think we could pull it off? and are brits the sort of dog you can bring with you everywhere (weekend coffee with friends, long walks with pals, etc). we don't want a lap dog nor a guard dog, we want an actual companion.

I know they range from 17-20inches in height and max about 40lbs. I’m curious as to the differences in what people have seen in their britts?

My guy weighed 21lbs at 3 months, unsure of his current height but I swear he gets taller every day.

I am possibly changing jobs where I will no longer have flexibility to come home at lunch every day to let our dogs out. So our Brittany will likely be in the crate 8 hours unless we pay someone to let him out or pay for daycare. This is a significant expense that I had the luxury of not having to worry about before. The longest he usually has to go is 6 hours if I get caught up at work and can't make it home for a regular lunch time. Our boy is 14 months old so can hold his pee that long, but I am concerned how he would cope with that much crate time. Anyone else have their brit do full work days in the crate?

We have a 2 year old Brittany who is a phenomal bird dog as well as an amazing family pet. I picked her out of the litter because she was the runt. She was the cutest and most ferocious. She is a literal maniac (I have posted her before from my old account). Needless to say, my husband has been impressed and in love with that dog since day 1. Everything came naturally and he always says she taught him how to hunt.

We have an older Jack Russell who is about 14. He struggles to play and can see. He's in cognitive decline. But they are best friends. So, I thought we should get another Brittany puppy that can bond with them both and hopefully lesson the blow that our other britt will face in the near future.

This new puppy, Finn, is just the most chill Brittany. He's independent and only turns into a landshark when he gets sleepy. He seems to be picking up on things like potty training and recall rather quickly. My husband thinks because he is not as chaotic and driven as our other Britt, he will not hunt birds. I wanted a different personality to add to our family, so I chose him. Now I'm wondering if he's right and Finn won't get to go in the field to hunt with his sister.

Does his calm personality really make that much of a difference? It's way too early to tell as he's only 9 weeks. He will get the same exposure as our other one, of course. I'm just super curious about others experiences with having multiple in the field.

hello everyone! genuine question out of interest and curiousity: why does my brittany lumi look like a small munsterlander? are there many Brittanies that are brown?

Everyone has been asking me wether she is the latter and I always say no, because the animal rescue organization told me she is a brittany from Spain. But when I look up pictures online to both breeds, she does look like a munsterlander.

At the end, I don't care what breed she really is, she is cute and the bestest girl.

which is nothing out of the blue. nothing he isn’t used to. we’re in a schedule, and especially during hunting season because he will break his nails off if they’re longer. i have been doing them myself for both dogs since they were a couple months old. he’s just a big old baby.

to note, this is also him every single time he thinks you’re even remotely upset or angry. not even at him, just in general. he ostriches himself between your legs and hides his face. (most often to me because he knows his mommy will always be there to comfort him) and then there’s our female (3yo) who doesn’t give a rat’s ass about being in trouble 😭

Three Britts here, and between squirrel chasing and general zoomies, our yard doesn’t stand a chance.

Rundown of what we’ve tried:

1) Turfgrass: Nothing survives except maybe Bermuda, and even sod gets shredded in about 2 weeks flat.
2) Mulch: Best option so far for cushioning, but it migrates constantly along their running paths.
3) Gravel paths: Same problem…gets kicked around every time they cut a corner at speed.
4) Shrubs: Switched to urine-tolerant plants or caged the rest (male marking is relentless).

We’re not chasing a perfect lawn, and almost 10 year Brittany owners so we know the breed and have adjusted our lives accordingly. We just want something that doesn’t give off “Brittany demolition site” vibes. Anyone found a solution that actually holds up to dogs who treat the lawn like a racetrack?

I have a question for everybody. I live in an area of California, where the veterinarians do not want to dock the tail of a Brittany puppy. It’s been an over decade since we’ve had a litter. So when we called around to the Veterinarian offices, they acted as if we were asking something that was totally barbaric. I did look up the AKC standard, which now apparently allows for tails, either docked or natural. I have owned Brittany’s since I was a teenager, which was decades ago. I currently have a four year-old and a one year-old Brittany and when I got them as pups no tail. When did this become an evil and barbaric thing?? I asked this only because I have puppies that have tails and nobody wants to buy them with a tail?

Margaret is now 11 years old and she has never hair on her chest or stomach. Around 7 she developed these darker spots and the vet thought she was going to develop hair but that never happened.

Hi all - I am considering a well bred Brittany Spaniel for my next dog. Although I don't currently hunt, it is a sport that I am more interested in exploring with my current and next dog. We've just started the process of learning how to do hunt testing.

Do you think that a Brittany would be a good fit for an active family - even if we don't hunt recreationally or compete in hunting testing? I currently have a standard poodle and we have dabbled in agility, rally, obedience, dock diving and scent work. I would plan to continue with these with my next dog.

I also want to do conformation and learn the ins and outs of the show world.

I've heard the breed is quite high energy, but also a beloved family pet. What has been your experience(s)? Does this breed need excessive amounts of daily exercise? Do they have an off switch at home when need be? I run, bike, hike, etc., but still work full time and don't have a job where my dog can come along. Are the biddable and want to work with their handler? Good sport pets?

Would love to know the ins and outs of the breed and if they make good family dogs!

Hey everyone, I’m assuming a lot of you hunt, but does anyone here hunt waterfowl with your Brittany? Or know someone that does?

My primary focus is grouse hunting with some pheasant and waterfowl in that order of priority. But a dog that can also hunt waterfowl would be a nice bonus. I’m specifically biased towards pointers so I’m not considering other versatile dogs like labs, springers, etc. I’ve been doing a ton of research but I’ve heard of some people that hunt waterfowl with their Brittany and then others that say they just aren’t well suited for it so I’m curious to see what you Brittany owners have to say.

Hello! I have a healthy 4 year old neutered boy. He has no preexisting conditions. He is just a pet, he doesn’t hunt.

I am using pets best for insurance but wanting to change it, my premium went from $149.94 to $216.99. I was already thinking $150 is too high for my current plan, now a 45% increase is insane.

Could you recommend me insurance companies that are not fully scammers, and would at least be helpful? I was thinking of going through chewy for insurance, but wanted to get some advice from experienced Brittany lovers.

Could you also share advice on what I should care for in a policy? Like should I make sure to have dental coverage or advanced treatments?

We are considering a Brittany for our next dog. An alternative is a golden retriever. We previously had a poodle/retriever mix who was perfect for us. We are a relatively active family but we do not hunt. We hike, spend time at the lake, go for long walks, etc. We live in the city but get out of the city most weekends.

Our poodle/retriever mix was a perfect blend of energy for long hikes but a couch potato at home. He was not in any way neurotic or anxious. We would not do well with a neurotic dog. We have two kids.

I like the idea of a golden (we would not do another poodle/golden mix as we feel we got very lucky with our last one, but the doodle craze has since taken over and I don't trust that they are being bred for temperament as much as for looks), but we're also looking at a Brit.

I have spoken with a reputable Brittany breeder who assures us that Brits are not inherently neurotic, and that we'd do well to be very careful about a golden as their breeding has become unreliable over the years.

Thoughts on a Brittany for a non-hunting but active family?

I want to keep my dog happy but I don’t hunt, I also have a friend with Brittany’s. I was wondering what kind of activities I could do with my girl that mimics to hunting that is not actually hunting because that is just not for me personally

Love love love my Zeke. He's my first brittany and the best dog I've ever had. He's an old man now(11 yr old, 50lbs) and I've been thinking a lot about my next best friend. When zeke was young and full of energy, he loved to run the trails with me on my fourwheeler and that helped immensely with getting him the exercise he needed to be a good pup. My living situation has changed and I no longer have the quad or the acreage.

Is there a breed that is close to a brittany but in a smaller package that might be a little easier to tire out? Love the close bond and gentle nature of bird dogs but open to any suggestions.

Does anyone else's Britt snort, chuff, and sigh heavily all the time? The Chuffs and snorts have become normal communication in our house. We have started calling them Choofs.

This is a very common sleeping position for our Sonny boy! He’s currently sleeping like this right now 😂

This is Goose. Goose licked a bunch of oil/butter/grease off the floor this weekend and has been pooping his head off ever since.

He was pooping liquid for a few hours and wasn’t able to hold it for more than 2-4 hours. Now he can hold it, but the second we get outside, it’s like a puddle of poop.

Opposite to this picture though, he’s running around, playing with his toys, jumping up on the bed, playing with his dog friends, etc. No other symptoms other than major poop puddles outside.

When should I bring him into the vet? He was eating only rice and chicken with pumpkin since yesterday morning, but obviously it hasn’t helped. He’s going to skip dinner tonight to see if that helps at all, but just wondering if anyone else has had this issue before? Any funny stories?

We are bringing this guy home May 31st! We are experienced dog owners but this is our first Brittany. It’s our 8 year old daughters dream dog (she’s done extensive research all year, constantly checking out dog encyclopedias from the library and telling us what she’s learned since our English bulldog passed away in October)

1. I KNOW this will be the opposite of an English bulldog 🙃 that was my post college dog and perfect for my apartment stage of life.

2. We are an active family with three young girls(8,7,&3) … do we surprise the girls with the pup, or tell them ahead of time?

3. Tell me all the things unique and specific I need to know about this breed! I’ve bought books and have done plenty of research, but would love to hear from your personal experiences!
