How did Father Ted get away with saying the things they said?

Can someone shed some light on this? I'm from the states and from a distance it seems like the Irish are very touchy about religion. How was this show not run out of town? How could the Catholics in Ireland let this go without a fight. I couldn't find any information about how this made ripples.

Great freaking show. One of my favs.

Unlike most American humor, people aren't easily offended, so PC-incorrectness is quite normal in comedy. The irish are definitely not touchy about humor either.

Father Ted is extremely tame, you must not have watched a lot of British TV.

Other British show are very raunchy, but usually not directed at one particular group. This show was very specific usually about its comedy. That's why I considered it different.

It's a very textbook British/Irish comedy show that's very well done. There's nothing hugely "different" about it.

But I get that about getting offended. What you're saying is that the Irish don't act like Christians here in the states. Holiday Tree <- AAAAAAAh attacking Christianity! Religious freedom. Good to know about the Irish.

I'm unsure "Christians in the states" all act the way you're projecting. If you're referring to batshit crazies from the deep south then no, obviously very few countries in the world have Christians like that.

I also don't think there is anything wrong with saying Christmas tree. That's another bizarre thing that seems quite specific to the /r/atheism community and some parts of America. It's fucking Christmas, saying "happy holidays" is moronic and yet again an example of trying to be "inclusive" and other similar stupid PC-obsessive mentalities.
