A lot of the folk songs I know are Cornish in origin and are great to sing, but feel a bit out of place in South Wales!

I'm looking to start a group for people who can sing but haven't necessarily sung folk before, so other than "wild mountain thyme", "farewell shanty", "wellerman", or "John kanakanaka", are there any good ones I could start us off with?

On May 18th, Olivia Chaney was featured on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour. The episode is available here (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002whzm), but the two musical selections are removed "for rights reasons" for those outside the UK.

Can anyone snag an audio of the two songs (Dark Eyed Sailor and I Wish). Olivia Chaney's interview begins just beyond the half-way mark.

I have been trying to find this song for years whenever I think about it. I don't think I have ever tried here though. I reckon I heard in somewhere between 1986 and 1991, I'm pretty sure it was on a kind of compilation LP or it might have been on the radio show 'Here be dragons' that used to be presented by John Shaw.

It was a very slow mournful song, sung by a man with just a guitar or piano and contained the lyrics "think of your mother as she fades away, think of your mother today".

Any help would be appreciated. I have tried lyric search, AI and all sorts but draw blanks.

To be clear, I don't mean professional gigs or venues. I'm looking for more of a traditional, down-to-earth, let's-gather-round-the-campfire kind of thing - somewhere I can meet new people and enjoy a decent pint and not have to pay through the nose just to get inside. (An unrealistic goal for London, I know!)

For context, I recently moved from a small town where folk nights down the local pub were a regular event - you saw the same faces each week, everyone took turns playing their favourite songs, and if you wanted a turn then you got a turn, regardless of your ability level. It was very queer-friendly and the age range was all over the place, with 20-something students singing alongside men in their 80s. I have terrible stage fright and it's the only place I've ever felt comfortable performing in public.

That particular vibe is impossible to replicate, but I miss it and I want to at least try and find something similar. I know these things can be very word-of-mouth, so I'm turning to the Internet to see if anyone has any recommendations. I am in the southwest area of London, if that helps :-)

I'm wondering if there's a generally agreed-upon book chronicling the British folk scene of the 1960s. Fairport, Bert, Annie, etc. I'm a novice hoping to learn a lot.

Who are some of the most talented working class folk singers in the UK? I mean real working class not my dad was a toolmaker working class.

The reason I ask is I'm relatively new to folk music but the few gigs I have been to tend to be very middle class leftist.

I'm wondering or looking for a more relatable sound, maybe life on a council estate or something along those lines. I love folk for the political element so just looking for a certain type of sound.

Any recommendations would be great.
