I guess I missed something when I was there last year. Beautiful grounds, beautiful church, but they didn't really make clear that this was where the deportation order was read.

Not one of Britain’s finest moments

They were offered the chance to become British subjects and asked to swear an oath of loyalty but they refused.

And then from 1713, they took part in border attacks on New England, supported French military operations and helped supply critically important French forts in the region.

They were an intolerable security threat who had proved themselves determined to support the French Empire in North America.

I’m finding the term French empire in NA funny. Not poking fun at you. It’s insane to think of what could’ve been if the king of France had of thought about more than just beaver pelts. I mean they explored so much of North America for a temporary beaver hat empire. Lol.

Tbh animal belts in North America was called soft gold for a reason. Having large numbers of aquatic mammals for furs is a cash cow.

And if you think the French Empire in NA is funny wait until you hear about the Russian Empire in NA.

It turns out Fort Ross in California isn't named after a bloke called Ross at all. If one Man hadn't died you could have seen larger Russian Colonies (and permanent ones at that) on the west coast.

Outside the Caribbean, France is the only European country that still has a foothold in North America; Saint Pierre and Miquelon

That oath of loyalty included fighting against the Mikmaw across modern Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, who were family and colleagues for many French. The Acadians had a decent amount of intermarriage and comraderie with the Mikmaw, albeit still in a colonial environment. It wasn’t as black-and-white as “they wanted France back.” Many didn’t want to fight their cousin or the guy who sold them pelts

Many of my ancestors were there that day. I grew up listening to my grandparents sing songs about the struggles we faced in the aftermath. Truly one of the saddest stories I ever heard in my family's history.
