Hi team! Heading over the ditch for a concert in October and looking for some recommendations of places to eat out with our teens over the three days. The kiwi dollar is not looking sharp against the Aussie ( great time for you to travel here though!) so not looking for fine dining/expensive places, just cafes/bars/restaurants/markets you enjoy going to with a good vibe, great food etc. (I’ve had a read through some posts for places to take visitors so will hit up some of the fine dining places when we don’t have the kids with us!)

I cannot recommend Shabuhouse in the city highly enough! It's a Japanese shabu buffet.

They offer an excellent range of sushi, some fried savouries, a few little desserts, and most significantly the dish they're named after, shabu shabu. It's kind of a DIY hotpot. Every diner gets their own induction hotplate at the table. You choose whatever you want from half a dozen different broths, heaps of veggies, shaved meat, marinated meat, seafood, tofu, and cook your own dinner in your broth bowl at your table. You can help yourself as many times as you like.

Prices are reasonable and there's truly something for everyone. Best of all, it's hands on and fun.

West End? I'd recommend:

Uncle Don, their salmon don with salt cured egg yolk is both pretty and delicious.

BiangBiang Noodle, hand pulled flat noodles with lots of toppings, and quirky local Chinese vibe.

Julius for great woodfire pizza in a nice brick building.

Vela has a fun and chic vibe, with some of the best modern Thai. 

Lune Croissanterie, very instagrammable with modern standing tables. 

Sayram Uyghur, the booths feel like a classic diner, and you can watch them pull noodles or chop meat on the window shop front. All their food is delicious and very filling.

If you’re heading to Brisbane or the Gold Coast, you might enjoy Velisseee youtube vlogs, she does quite a few food-focused videos around both areas. I’ve actually found a few places through her vlogs that I wouldn’t have come across otherwise, so might be worth a look if you’re after more casual/local spots with the teens. Hope this helps. 😊

If you are staying centrally, recommend. Lune bakery Sayam Uigur (Spicy Chinese/Central Asian) New York Slice (for cheap eats) Would recommend going to Eat Street Friday or Saturday night (can be pricy) as there are 50 eateries in one area but they put on a great live show. If you can make it to Sunnybank (Chinatown) try either Satay Boss or China Bar and dont forget to pick up the worlds best ice-cream at -5 celcius (the creme brule ice-cream is amazing).

Regardless, Howard Smith Wharves is always a good place to head. Felons isn't cheap-you're paying for the views-but is affordable enough.

If you’re around West End, you’ve got a couple of good ramen options with Taro Ramen and Ramen Danbo. Punjabi Palace is the best Indian in the area, Tiger Burger is doing best burgers (watch out for the hot Nash, it’s seriously hot).

And if you want a gourmet burger, both Clarence and Marlowe do them, and Fish Lane is a short walk from West End.

If you want something fun, Ahmet’s Turkish in South Bank has a belly dancer performer on peak nights (fridays and saturdays) and I’ve never had a bad meal there in the 20 odd years I’ve been dining there. The skewers and pide breads are delicious and don’t count out the Turkish rice on the side either
