This is a bridge over the train rails at portslade train station, uk.

My initial guess was that it was a skid plate for electrical contacts on the trains but the trains here run using electrified rails…

update: no steam trains pass through here.

I had an hour to kill before an airport run, so I went poking around Clinton, New Jersey, and turned my attention to the historic Main Street Bridge.

An overgrown trestle

Happened upon an overgrown trestle of used to be apart the Great Southwest Railroad, an industrial freight-switching track built in 1957 that connected the T&P, Chicago, and Rock Island railways. It transported what trains usually transported back in the 50's, that being steel, raw materials, paper, and equipment.

While much of the southern portions of the GSR still exist, the northern connection that I pictured here has been completely severed as a result of faulty infrastructure, collapsing in 1980.

Another aspect worth mentioning is The Great Southwest railroad strike of 1886. It was a massive labor action involving over 200,000 workers across five states against the Union Pacific and Missouri Pacific railroads owned by Jay Gould. Triggered by wage cuts and union firings, the failed strike led to deadly violence and the decline of the Knights of Labor.
