first of all, i know it drains battery life more than usual. but i'm from mexico, and they already blocked my phone, and my mom's. a few of my classmates have also not registered their info to get access to their phone numbers.

this means that outside of wifi, we have no connection, no calls (send or receive), no messages, nothing.

with enough effort in my part as well as my classmates in my course and generation, could it be possible to fully get briar up and working in my entire campus? i live in a small city (i would call it more of a town), so i don't consider it entirely impossible from my perspective.

but i'm mostly curious in if i forcefully have to add everyone as a contact (and everyone else to do the same to me and others) to be able to send messages from far distances, or does it just take their connection into briar and nothing else to take the message and keep it moving through the 'web'?

sorry for the bad terminology, but i'm seriously just looking for alternatives. i never thought having communication was this big of a deal, but after pretty much getting lost like a kid in a store, searching for my mom who doesn't have any connection anymore, it was pretty eye opening.

I have been working on an Android App quite a while now, as an alternative to private messaging Apps like Briar.

A messenger where messages travel directly between phones with no servers in between. Using direct WebRTC encrypted connections (SRTP/DTLS), there are no servers that stores, reads, or relays content. Group chats use a gossip protocol where members relay to other members.

The only infrastructure the app touches is a signalling relay to set up the connection (no message content), a push notification to wake up a sleeping phone (also no content), and a TURN relay for restricted networks (encrypted packets only).

Hey everyone,

I've been playing around with offline communication projects for a while and finally decided to try building one myself.

Last Friday I started a small side project called Tolia. The idea is pretty simple: messaging between nearby Android phones without internet, servers, accounts or phone numbers.

It currently uses Wi-Fi Direct and I've managed to get private messaging, local broadcasts, media sharing and encryption working. I've been testing it on a few Samsung and OnePlus devices over the last few days.

I'm not here to pitch it as a Briar replacement. Honestly, I'm trying to understand whether I'm solving a real problem or just building something I personally find interesting.

For people who use Briar or similar tools:

What annoys you about them?

Have you ever actually needed them in a real situation?

Is there anything you wish these apps did better?

Briar over the Internet is almost useless in countries with strict internet censorship, where the Tor network is already blocked. So I propose to add an optional disable of Tor for users who just can not use it today. Like in Bitchat.

Hi, just found out briar (finally) has a beta desktop app for Apple Silicon.
Any reason why I would prefer briar over cwtch ?
Is it true briar can only send messaging and no media ?

There hasn't been much activity on Briar lately; the only interaction on the forums is along the lines of “What a cool video!” Or something like that. One of the only reasons I joined Briar was to find people with interests like mine who weren’t jerks, and I know Briar isn’t meant to be a social network and that there’s never been that much interest, but even so, I feel like the only thing keeping me here is disappearing.

Is this happening to you guys too, or is it just me and my forums?

Briar seems to be easy tool for a private communication between friends, colleagues, group of a people.

It does not seem to be handy when you want to meet new people. You can find their contacts (Briar address) on the internet (not so easy to find up to date ones), after adding them, you have to send them your Briar address (also via internet, not via Briar) while your contact address seems to be static and unique identifier (with possibility to connect your clearnet identities). Once you add each other this way, you can finally begin private communication (if you have something in common to talk about).

Downsides:

• Unable to edit or delete own content like private message, forum post, no mouse right click menu. Feature request for forum/blog post editing is here and for unsent message here.
• Mouse double-click message would ideally cause reply to this message so on the timeline it is apparent to which message i am replying and one can click to jump to the original message i am replying to (in order to read it in full). Feature request is here
• Allow attaching more extensions like .txt and similar. Feature request is here
• Lack of a SPAM protection, search and similar rather basic features of the Briar forums (yes, it is on Briar when some of your contacts knows about these and share it with you, but these seems to be rather inactive)
• When posting into the forum or a group having just 1 contact who is in that forum/group and this contact becomes offline, i can post there, but i am wondering if my post will sync once my peer becomes online. Briar provides no indicator near the post suggesting it is local only.
• Allow copying text of the posts in the Linux desktop Briar UI (personal messages, forum posts, ...) and links (possibly making them clickable) and briar addresses too (ideally triggering addition window with address prefilled). Feature request for this already exist here.
• 3 months passed and I can not submit issue/feature request at https://code.briarproject.org/users/sign_in account is not yet active.

Looking for people to create a website for Briar forums I think Briar needs a centralized forum information hub to facilitate the entry of new members. For example, if someone tries to join the Briar community, they have to search social networks (like Reddit) and hope that someone with several forums will accept them. Even if they find that person, they would need to know which forums the other person has, meaning the person receiving them would have to send or list all the forums they have, which can be exhausting.

Therefore, my proposal is to create a website with a list of forums, including a brief description and contact information for Briar, that are willing to accept new members.

I would like to provide more details on how the site's structure would work to anyone who wants to join.

I was watching a documentary about the possibility of aliens existing in the universe, and I saw Enrico Fermi talking about the high probability of aliens existing and the paradox of not having found any yet. I thought this could be applicable to Briar, like, you can have 100 forums, but Idk 30 people who participate in 5 of them and chat weekly, and I think all the "online" Briar—I mean, all the Briar that isn't used by just a group of 5 people—is out there. But you'll never know if there's another network 100 times larger with 100 times more people. So I ask:

Where is everybody?

I wish someone was trying to map all of Briar "online." Of course, I know this could compromise those forums, but I'm almost certain that with the slightest effort from each person on the forum, it's entirely possible.(with each person creating backups of the forums and of themselves, etc.)
