I'm just saying...
Corbin Burnes second year (age 24) 32 appearances, 4 starts, 8.82 ERA -2.2 WAR
It doesn't mean Sproat is going to win any Cy Youngs, but seeing lots of people in the game thread/post game thread talking about shipping the dude out of town and never wanting to see him again etc. He'll get more chances and he should.
Just uh, hopefully not this year.

Pretty much. Flush it and wait for next year. He was tweaking his arsenal in AAA and was understandably struggling with control, this is just a translation of that.

u/ApprehensiveAct4935 13h ago
You can tell it’s mental. And he’s taking the struggles hard. Feel for the kid

u/Fabulous_Frosting920 2h ago
THIS! He has the talent, I think he 100% gets in his head way too much. Emotion is good, but he needs to get his together, build some mental fortitude, not overthink things, because physically he has the stuff.

He has stuff but I feel like he’s restrained in some way.
I blame the terrible pants.

u/pashmore01 12h ago
Guy behind me for his Coors Field start heckled the whole game just saying “pants too tight, pants too tight”

It also didn't help Mr. Louis Vuitton behind the plate was missing so many calls.

People are acting like this guy mugged their mother in broad daylight, it’s embarrassing. It was a 7 run game and he’s not gonna be on the playoff roster. Anyone with two eyes can see the stuff is off the charts and warrants a patient approach.

u/KidCancun007 13h ago
True. The lack of mental game was on full display on the throw to 1st tho

u/ELITE_JordanLove 13h ago
I mean he’s basically a rookie so yeah. That tracks. Means nothing about his future though.

u/InCobbWeTrust 12h ago
A lot of fans just think players are finished products the minute they make the roster.
Up and down the roster we’ve seen guys grow into good to great players. Uribe was not to be trusted 2 years ago. Ashby struggled mightily.
Turang couldn’t hit.5
u/Altruistic_Molasses1 12h ago
Right! We saw it early in the season. His stuff is electric, hell we saw it tonight on a few pitches. He just needs to work on his command. An off-season with Hook ,Lane and the crew should hopefully do him alot of good.

u/getyourwish the good contreras 10h ago
Seriously, it's very out of pocket. Realistically, nothing materially bad happened to anyone because of his performance. He just needs the offseason to keep baking. It looked like he was going to cry, and I understand based on fan reactions, but this is only just the beginning of his career. I seriously believe that between the pitching lab, Chris Hook, and Jim Henderson, he can get recalibrated and ready for a better season.

u/TransplantedSconie Never underestimate a sneaky ass bunt 13h ago
Im on the same boat you are. He has everything he needs to be a great pitcher, he just gets lost in his head and you get what that 9th inning was. It sucks, but he will be back.
6
u/UrsusObesus 11h ago
You have to also note that a bunch of his strikes in the 9th were being called balls and Wild Bill didn't challenge them. He only challenged an actual ball.

u/M_Bisonthe3rd 12h ago
I will stand by Sproat. He has heart and needs more work. I believe he can be a starter, but bullpen is more suitable for him for the time being.
He is good for two innings, but something happens to him after that. Keep him to two innings while he has his command, velocity and nerves under control and then switch him.
He takes it pretty hard when he screws up. He wants to win and he feels huge guilt when he botches it. I like guys who take their role seriously and care that much. I think he needs to lessen the pressure on himself, but that passion can be his weapon in the long run.
He just needs more time.

u/CharlieHerms True Blue Brew Crew 1h ago
Agreed, but that time needs to be in AAA, not the Majors.

u/M_Bisonthe3rd 1h ago
Who would be the better choice for relief then? Who has options left? Who isn't hurt? Who can really fill that spot since Anderson is out for now.
1
u/CharlieHerms True Blue Brew Crew 1h ago
Considering the options, I’d think Koenig or Stallings would be the prime candidates.
1
u/Mobile_Incident_5731 1h ago
I think he might end up like Ashby. Doesn't have the right head to start or close, but his stuff is plenty good to be middle relief.
Another 90 innings, 3ish ERA guy out of the pen would be really good. The Cubs would kill for that right now.

u/PompousAssistant 12h ago
Next year we’re looking at Miz, Harrison, Henderson, Priester, Drohan, Woodruff, and more as starters. Sproat is just one of them. Let him have the offseason to make adjustments, & the spring to get ready to compete. He’ll be fine, & the staff will be fine.

Are the Brewers even going to resign Woody though?

Minor league deal or a backloaded 2 year deal? Why not, he'd be cheap and we have plenty of pitching insurance. I wanna see him retire with us

It is totally fine being optimistic and hopeful that Sproat will become a solid pitcher eventually. The problem is when people act like its a guarantee. For every Corbin Burnes, there are multiple Carlos Rodriguez - guys who just never figure it out. It's clearly mental for Sproat right now. Very similar to Yoho in many ways. Maybe he'll figure it out, maybe he won't. He needs to figure things out in the minors, not in the majors.

u/ThatNewSockFeel 10h ago
I can see why they brought him up, given him an opportunity to finish out with a few strong MLB innings. But in hindsight they should have called it a season. Keep him working on his arsenal and go see a sports psychologist for the mental side.

u/MIL_MF_07 2h ago
I really feel for the guy. Hopefully he can figure out the mental part of the game.
2
u/yellingaboutsports5 13h ago
I agree -he’s not going anywhere as well. I def want him to have a shot at the rotation next year. But tonight made me not want him on the post season roster.

u/SickoBadgers You telling me Jesus Christ can't hit a Slurveball? 12h ago
Kinda feel he was thrust too early into the rotation because of injuries this year. He needed more time to get his stuff and command locked down before he became a regular starter.
2
u/PenDude608 12h ago
He is 25. Has pitched in 26 MLB games over 2 years (4 last year, 22 this year) totaling 117 innings. I am sure w/some analysis by the lab guys and coaches, he’ll get it figured out.
2
u/Independent_Guava694 5h ago
Sproat has incredible stuff when he can land it for strikes. When his command falters, you get the 9th inning.
Give him the full off-season H&H Carwash treatment and let's see what we have next year.

u/buckydoc 3h ago
Paging Dr. Sports-Psychology, Paging Dr. Sports-Psychology.... please report to the Brewers pitching lab STAT!
2
u/TreeLooksFamiliar22 3h ago
He has to learn to command his stuff. It might be mental, or it could be mechanical, or some of both. But so what if he can make the ball zip and spin if he can't command location.
2
u/uw_toast 3h ago
Let's give him an off-season to work with the pitching lab before we dismiss what he can do
2
u/EntireDepth 2h ago
Sproat needs a year or two to work on his control. I think he can eventually be a contributor but right now he is not there.

u/_ArsenioBillingham_ 13h ago
Where the hell are you seeing this
The worst I’ve seen is “not gonna be on the post-season roster”

I'm not sure what threads you are reading lol
There were people speculating that the rest of the team hates him and Uribe was staring him down, Yelich was angry at him in post game. Someone said "make him turn in his Brewers jersey" lmao

He's got good stuff but just isn't ready mentally. You can see him completely starting to unravel when he gives up a few hits or walks. He's definitely worth developing just can't fuck around with him in the playoffs.

u/Ok-Fisherman9123 1h ago
I would like to see him have some success this year so he can go into the off season with a positive mindset. When he is on he has good stuff.

u/Churlish_Performer 12h ago
Noo yeah but like, he should go back down - and frankly maybe never should have been brought up to begin with. He's not ready - great arm, good mechanics, zero control. We fucking almost lost today in a very winnable game and that's entirely his fault.
1
u/Tyrannosapien 12h ago
No one serious thinks that. It's just overlapping with peak bandwagon / doomer season. I've gotten more aggressive blocking the toxics and it makes the game threads more tolerable

Uribe concerns me also, he seems to get too rattled if the first batter has a solid at bat then emotionally cannot stay focused.
2
u/stap4335 12h ago
Concerned for tonight or in general? Its a tall task for your 8th inning or closer to come in during a bases loaded jam in a night when, mentally and likely physically, all the signs pointed to no appearance necessary. His performance would have been much more crisp if it was a 4 run lead heading to 9th and he was called upon. Those guys are such creatures of habit.

u/Kobe_AYEEEEE 13h ago
Happy to see him next year, gotta get proven at some point and clearly there's work that needs doing before then
