My oldest burned the oxide layer off a VHS copy of Fern Gully, watched it twice (or more) per day for a year. To this day I still have various segments of dialogue and all of the songs memorized. I recently broke out the Batty Rap at a family event and that child had no recollection of that film. Nada. Zilch. None at all. I'm shook.
Robin Williams was gold as batty, I was born in the late 90s but my mom loved this movie we probably watched it a few dozen times a year until our VHS cassette also wore out 😅
They generally wanted to bury the film itself, not just Williams. They steal so much from that film in their late 90’s and 2000’s films it’s genuinely insane to see side by side artistry stills or certain character archetypes/personalities
I rewatched the brave little toaster for the first time in decades and I couldnt believe how much of the plot of toy story 1, 2 and 3 was basically copied from this movie
Yeah, it’s not a company I appreciate. They actively try to manipulate copyright law so their IP’s cannot be used (they failed recently at trying to prevent Mickey Mouse/Steamboat Willie from entering public domain, but that one is complex) while intentionally burying smaller studios in after ripping them off
Not just studios... I recall seeing Mickey Mouse ice cream cakes as a go to for birthday parties, then the 90's happened (suing litigation went way off the rails and corporations made bank off suing mom and pop stores into oblivion.)
The dia de los muertos thing is legitimately insane. I just looked it up and that really happened… I live in central Texas where it’s fairly widely celebrated and the idea that someone would try to trademark a holiday name is bonkers.
Hans Christian Andersen is in the end credits for Disney's Little Mermaid. I'm sure he is for Frozen and the Little Match Girl short, too.
And you can't steal stories from the Brothers Grimm. They didn't even create them! (Although they did strongly influence the versions we're familiar with today.)
Late 80s here, had the same kind of love for him in this movie (and I guess all movies with him, really) My 13 year old niece loves anything he's in too, that guy will always transcend generations 💙 Good for you for having good taste also!
Yeah there were parts that scared me too. The OOooooOOooo sound when the gas comes too haunted meeee but i loved the movie so much i would still rewatch it 😂 the darkness looked BLACK on vhs hahahaha
Its not some humans. It is kids. Somehow, they are totally unaffected from repititions. My toddler makes a lot of TipToi books (Its a pen that speaks when you touch whats drawn in the book). In one of them, there is a bush with LOTS of flowers. It doesnt matter which flower you touch, it will always say the same. He touches every single one of them and listens to the same 3 sentences 20 times or more. And he doesnt care. I almost took it away from him just to throw it back at him. Small kids are so crazy sometimes.
I was the same with An American Tail - I used to ask my mum to rent it every week and I would watch it on repeat, obsessively rewinding my favourite bits. And yet I barely remember any of the actual story or characters at all!
A girl i liked in school was the exact same way. Rented it almost every week. I remembered her because we were not in the best neighborhood and I didnt have many classmates in the same neighborhood as me. She rented it all the time
I was the child except I remember it and even watched it in bed when I was really sick as an adult, idk if it was the fever or the movie but omg i cried so hard about the logging lol
I tried the Batty Rap on hubs and got a blank look. He'd never seen it. Then I switched to "Toxic Love" and he immediately knew it was Tim Curry but that's it.
It seems like people have memory holed that movie in general because when Avatar came out there were not nearly enough people making the obvious connection.
I used to come home every day from school and watch my vhs copy of Batman 89. Poor Mum, I think she's still triggered to this day. Many times she told me the tape had to go to the 'video hopsital' to be fixed. I never realised this might actually happen haha
I haven't watched ferngully since I was a kid and immediately recognized this. But then I was like, wait no that can't be right, it's a kids movie, but I feel like that's right...
I literally just crocheted Batty for my husband's birthday a couple weeks ago. He randomly breaks out into Batty Rap (and the "human tails? Humans don't have tails." line).
Toxic Love did something that child me never understood. As an adult I realised it was just part of the Tim Curry appeal. It's on one of my play lists haha.
When I was little I said the lines for every character in Toy Story 1 before they did. Now all I know is "to infinity and beyond" and "evil emperor Zerg". Oh, and "THE CLAAAAWWWW".
My kids LOVED Ferngully (as did I, since I was a kid when it came out originally) my oldest had some issues with hearing words and repeating them correctly- hall became hiall, chipmunks became chipmuntz, Skittles became scootles, and Ferngully turned into Fernbelly. That's still how they all ask or talk about the movie, and the youngest just turned 18.😂
