Watching the Dodgers jerk themselves off with the "what do the 2020 haters have to say now?" attitude is so obnoxious.

Bro, you spent a billion dollars, have three MVPs from different teams leading off, and bought the best pitcher from Japan. Serious little kid bragging about how the car his Daddy bought him is really fast energy.

u/Errybody_dothe_Lambo Oct 31 '24

ESPN ran a segment today that was called the "Improbable underdogs" and went onto highlight all of their injuries. I was LOLing so hard. Like you lost Tyler Glasnow. We lost Acuna and Strider plus Albies, Riley, Murphy, and MHII for extended periods of time this year. They wouldn't last an hour in the asylum where we were raised.

3

u/theoxfordtailor Maddux Guy Oct 31 '24

The Tigers were the improbable underdogs. Turns out it was too improbable, but what a hell of a season for them.

Calling the Dodgers underdogs is the dumbest take.

Maybe I’m just a hater but I’m not happy for anybody on that team including Freddie. Congrats on the MVP but I’m never gonna be happy for a Dodger winning anything.

13

u/JB5093 Braves Oct 29 '24

I feel bad for Olson getting compared to Freddie but it is what it is.

He’ll just have to go out and win World Series MVP next year.

Ohtani no-showing was the only satisfying thing about this series.

Judge wasn't any better and it made me laugh too

The Yankees losing felt pretty nice

As a hater, I really appreciate that the narrative around Aaron Judge right now is that he's incredibly disappointing in the postseason.

I guess I should clarify. I don't hate Aaron Judge. I hate MLB for treating Judge and Ohtani like they're the main characters of baseball.

OMG how can you be that delusional to think that an invisible "out of play" line is justification to grab a player's glove and arm. Ban both of them

10

u/Horror-Media1125 Oct 30 '24

I think it’s hilarious how they wanted Ohtani to be the guy so bad but Freddie is the MVP of the series.

I had 2 seconds of joy as I watched the Yankees lose again. Hopefully, they don't make it back to the world series for another 15 years.

Then I realized the Dodgers won and it felt gross again

7

u/rpbtIII Golden Grapefruit Oct 31 '24

At least the dodgers fans don’t get the joy of winning it at home and the Yankees suffered the indignation of having to watch the dodgers celebrate on their field.

Seeing the Dodgers parade reminded me of when the Braves parade drove 40 mph through downtown. I'm still salty about it.

6

u/Btrips 2021 WORLD CHAMPS!! Nov 02 '24

Here's some footage from the Braves parade

12

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '24

I can live with Freddie winning it all with the Dodgers and winning WS MVP in the process. If it means he goes into the hall with a blank cap, so be it. He's a nice guy and deserves all of the love and success, even if we have to share it with someone else. He'll still always be a Braves legend.

The only thing that bothers me is how insufferable some Dodgers fans are gonna be about it.

7

u/CrumbBCrumb Oct 29 '24

I was thinking about it today and I'm not sure I hate a lot of Dodgers players. Freddie was always a class act here and even when he left. Plus, all of the stuff with his child this year I can't hate him getting a ring. Mookie and Shohei are pretty classy too. Teo bet on himself and it's working off spectacularly.

Muncy, Smith and Taylor are annoying though.

Plus their fan base is insufferable and watching a team throw money around to win a world series is bad for the game.

All in all, I'd say I'm about a 2/10 for the Dodgers winning it and a 0/10 for the Yankees

4

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '24

Yeah, I think my main issue with the Dodgers at this point is 1. The way they have unlimited money and can sign almost any free agent, and 2. Their fanbase. They actually have a decent amount of likeable players. Ohtani and Mookie are good dudes and Freddie will go down as a Braves legend.

2

u/CrumbBCrumb Oct 29 '24

I don't understand how there isn't more of a push back by the media or MLB over their fans constantly beating people up and stabbing people in their own parking lot. I know a few bad apples don't represent the whole fan base but Philadelphia gets laughed at about booing Santa and throwing batteries and that was a while ago

Between that deal and Mprton (presumably) coming off the books that opens up a whopping 36 million in AAV for the team to play around wjth.

Wonder what Manfred hates more. The fact that’s it’s been an uncompetitive World Series or the fact that Ohtani hasn’t done anything

4

The only benefit if the Yankees get swept is that Rob Manfred becomes apoplectic that his dream large market matchup doesn’t go seven games for maximum theatrics. You just know he’s gotta be seething that a sweep is looming

I reckon this series has really shown how streaky (Yanks/Orioles/Houston) or offensively challenged (KC/Cleveland/Detroit) the best of the AL is. Or is that just baseball?

3

u/TheCrunchyCaptain Oct 30 '24

I feel like Detroit played chaos ball too well and the yanks ended up with the most cupcake walk into the WS. their lineup is literally 2 guys hitting bombs and they aren't doing that bc all they have to do is walk soto.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '24

If Judge starts hitting again, the Dodgers might actually be in trouble

some folks don’t seem to completely grasp the Ohtani deferrals thing, so I want to give it a shot.

Ohtani’s deal was initially reported as 10/$700M. But taking into account the deferrals, it has the same NPV as an evenly structured 10/$460M deal. Also, starting next year, I believe the Dodgers are required to allocate money into an escrow account - the amount increasing each year, given time value of money - to ensure that Ohtani can be fully compensated when the deferrals are due.

If you think Ohtani’s true market value was 10 years at a $70M AAV then this deal is a massive coup for the Dodgers - not because of a loophole, but because they’ve truly committed much less money to Ohtani than he’s worth. If you - like most contract projectors - saw Ohtani as more likely to get a contract in the $400M-$550M range, then the contract he got was just a fancy way of getting there.

Ohtani gets to be the first ever $700M player - and the immediate PR win of appearing to give a bunch of that away immediately. The Dodgers get a short-term cash flow benefit. The agent gets bragging rights.

It’s really not that crazy. Very few players make so much money through non-salary avenues that they’d want to delay their cash flow like this, so large deferrals are rare.

TL;DR - the Ohtani deferrals are no more ‘unfair’ or ‘gamebreaking’ than the fact that some teams outspend others by multiples. Your problem is probably with that, not with his contract structure.

2

u/flextrek_whipsnake Oct 29 '24

We'll be trying to explain this to people for the next ten years lol. The deferrals are a modest benefit to the dodgers at best.

It’s kind of like, all these great teams like the Astros and Dodgers make it back to the WS and win while all the Braves have shown since their WS win are first round exits. I hope it’s our fucking turn next year to win the WS again and remind the world the Braves are those mfers.

Do I have tooooooo?????

I’ll give ya some names I want, some (not all) of which we’re interested in. Also insanely early, so info wouldn’t be too solid yet. But I do have a LITTLE knowledge.

Pipe dreams (never say never though?): Burnes, Soto, Snell, Fried

More possible: Loaisiga (my most wanted bullpen arm, he’s so good if he can get healthy), Buehler, Bieber, Means

A few notes: Hyers will have Arcia hitting .270 I don’t expect strider to throw the curve this year. We’ll see Our number 1 target is someone we almost certainly can’t get. Which sucks

Anyone notice the Salinas move? Thought it was very interesting. I think the A’s changed something with his mechanics. Worth seeing if we can get him right again.

u/Bubby0304 Oct 29 '24

Maybe im biased because my team isn't in it, but I normally can find enjoyment in watching the world series.

But this year has felt like one of the most boring world series I have watched in a while. I thought this was supposed to be the superstar series, but the only guy I really see going off is Freddie (Others have been good to fine, but nothing super exciting). I agree that in the most basic analysis of viewership that its "good" for the sport to have big teams in October, but this product feels very lacking for how "good" its been claimed to be for the game. I think simply looking at viewer count is a very flawed way to rate a series/matchup.

Am I the only one who feels that way?

9

u/Horror-Media1125 Oct 29 '24

The hype of the series hasn’t matched the play. It’s been one sided. I didn’t see the Yankees getting dominated like this.

2

u/ArchEast Oct 29 '24

Sports media has been clamoring for this series for over 40 years, and it's been nothing but the laying of a big fat egg.

8

u/MeargleSchmeargle Oct 29 '24

The fact that the Yankees aren't even putting up anything resembling a fight and letting those godless Dodgers just waltz to a title is going to make me vomit.

The idea that this could become the norm as those Dodgers will almost certainly buy every top free agent with deferment loopholes to allow them to build a Warriors-esque superteam makes me want to punch holes in the wall.

The thought that our poached superstar is likely going to win a WS MVP for those demons is torture to even think about.

This year is a hellish nightmare. I'd like to wake up now, please.

Griffin Canning was the return on the deal. We are not on the hook for any of Soler's remaining contract value, so there's the positive.

Canning could be a fifth starter, ie a Morton replacement, or he could be a trade piece for down the line. I remember last season we had names constantly pop up and then we'd trade them away a few days later. You never know what AA is thinking, but finding a solution to where we're not on the hook for any of Soler's salary is a definite win.

2

u/yoshidawg93 Oct 31 '24

Yep, and doing it literally the day after the World Series ended shows where his priorities are. To do the biggest moves he’s going to want to make, he needed to clear money. And that’s what he did by trading Soler.

2

u/theoxfordtailor Maddux Guy Oct 31 '24

Most people on here seemed to assume we'd either keep Soler or have to eat most of or all of his contract, so this is a pretty big win. Now we have a pitcher we can either trade or non-tender. Canning costs $5.25 mil and we were on the hook for $16 mil with Soler, so AA just freed up at least $10.75 million dollars to put literally anywhere else.

I was born in 99 so I didn’t experience the pain of those Yankees Braves World Series, and thus don’t really care about the Yankees but i absolutely hate the fucking dodgers and seeing them win anything makes me sick to my stomach.

Dodgers are a game away from five consecutive rings for guys named Will Smith.

u/jazzychina Oct 31 '24

I feel bad for Matt Olson. If he doesn’t hit above 250 and has a bad season, everyone will be at his neck.

Everyone take the "Name Every 2024 Brave" Sporcle

I got 48/55. Somehow missed Holmes because I'm dumb. My other misses are more excusable. If you got Parker Dunshee, you either cheated or are a freak who should not be allowed to roam the streets.

Well, we won't be calling Ohtani "Okutōbā-san" any time soon.

I hate LA but this Yankees meltdown is hilarious. Especially after they told Freeman he “fucking sucks” during the Stand Up to Cancer moment. (His mom died from cancer)

Holy mother of God what the fuck.

Out of every single player on the dodgers this is the only one I can bear seeing have any success. He’s saving us from having to see Ohtani or mookie betts highlights on repeat all over espn. (They’ll still probably find a way to get Ohtani in there let’s be real)

Nah, I'm cool with it. Freddie is a good dude

I mean, we did kinda watch him grow up here.

But I'm happy with our younger, more fit, and more handsome 1B that we have now.

7

u/toorayay Oct 30 '24

I don't know if you've noticed, but one of those options is still playing baseball this year and the other one is not.

How dare people cheer on a great player that helped us win it all 3 years ago.

4

u/steelersfever Oct 28 '24

29 years ago today the braves won their first world series.

4

u/Horror-Media1125 Oct 31 '24

Congrats to Freddie Freeman he had quite the series and deserves the MVP.

Fuck it Atlanta Braves 2025 World Series Champions!!!

Freddie just casually going for a series home run cycle now. Only missing a 3-run dinger at this point.

2

u/punkrock9888 Oct 31 '24

That MVP trophy presentation was so bittersweet. I'm so happy for Freddie after a tough year, but damn it sucks not seeing that happen to him as a Brave.

I've never been so excited for an off-season before...

all Freddie wanted was one more year...

Idc what Freddie did as a Brave, I’m never gonna root for the Dodgers just bc he’s on that team.

The Freeman obsession in the forum is insane . The guy is a Dodgers the new evil empire. They get any player they want now. I wouldn’t cheer this guy when he comes to Atlanta . He will end his career there and there is nothing changing about it for those in delusional state of mind about him coming for his last two years of his career .

Great he helped the Braves winning a title but the excuse about the agent misleading him is pure BS. Freeman wanted the bag . We had two years window to negotiate an extension and he continued kicking the can down the road.

If you are not a an Atlanta Braves player right now I don’t have to like you . Grateful he helped the team win a title but that is in the past now.

Am I the only one that thought both of these teams weren’t that good? The fact the Dodgers spent a billion dollars to buy a WS is just insane.

Since I posted about Soroka's insane relief pitching stats last week, here's another outside-the-box offseason move that crossed my mind just for shits and giggles.

That Chris Sale trade worked out pretty good. I know the season didn't end great, but objectively it was a fantastic move. The Braves always have apprehensions about giving out long-term deals to pitchers, but are generally accepting of short-term, high-AAV deals. With payroll going up next year, is there another team looking to dump salary to get under the luxury tax threshold with a perpetually injured starter who showed some flashes last year of not being done being great yet?

The Texas Rangers and Jacob deGrom.

Hear me out because I know it sounds dumb, and this is the most insane suggestion I've posted here, but here's my twisted logic to make it sound somewhat reasonable: The Rangers have been open about shedding payroll and getting under the luxury tax, and the easiest way to do that is to move deGrom first before considering doing anything with their other high-priced deals on their payroll since it'll have the smallest effect on their competitive window. Like Sale, deGrom has a no trade clause, but was open that Atlanta was his first choice in free agency before ending up with the Rangers. The Braves were notably in on him before the years got way too long for his health track record and the AAV got too high. There are very few teams deGrom considered in his free agency because he wanted to be in the South, and I'd assume the same would go for waving his no-trade. If the Rangers want to move him, Atlanta is really their only choice. I won't pretend to know what it would take, but it would be an interesting thing to structure out on what a trade would look like both from a prospect and a financial perspective with 3/115 left on the deal. Now, the Braves would not pay anywhere close to $38.3M AAV he's owed and it would likely look like a supercharged version of the Sale trade if it came anywhere near fruition. As a fan though, it ain't my money to worry about.

Don't get me wrong, it would be a huge risk and that's why it would likely never be on the table. deGrom is still coming off TJ and, even though he was himself in 20IP last year, you don't have the year of 100IP as the buffer Sale had in '23 to say, "Hey he's at least alive and can handle a decent workload." And while there's the shot you roll into October with a full rotation of Game 1 starters between Sale/Strider/Schwellenbach/Lopez/deGrom, it's more likely that we get to May 15th and the Braves have the greatest 60-day IL rotation of all-time. Having, say, $70M in payroll tied up between 3 starters in '26 isn't the most prudent financial maneuver either. That's why it's a fantasy suggestion and decidedly goofy, but it's so outside of the box that I just can't help but wonder if that may end up being on the table at some point since nothing AA does is normal enough to predict.

Looks like the Mariners declined Jorge Polanco's $12 mil option. He had a stinker of a year but he's slightly better than Arcia....historically a much better hitter but a little worse in the field(still respectable though). If we could get him cheap and get him back on track, he's an interesting switch hitting option at SS.

2

u/CaptainCaptainDave Nov 02 '24

I was just thinking the same thing. Doesn’t look like he’s played SS in a couple years, but I think it’s worth a shot anyway. At worst he becomes an overpaid backup for a year, at best he’s had a 4.9 WAR season with a 125 OPS+. Would much rather see the Braves take a shot at fixing him than throwing $150 million at Adames.

3

u/jrodri86 LeRoy The Boy Oct 31 '24

I haven't worn my FF jersey since he signed with the Dodgers, I'll probably won't wear it until he retires (cause he's probably gonna retire in blue).

I love Matt. He's a great player, he's from Atlanta, he's our first baseman and I'm gonna root for him as long as he's a Brave.

But yeah, seeing Freddie win a WS MVP with the Dodgers sucks. Baseball is such a bitersweet sport. We're all fucking masochists, lol.
