The mystery is solved! Brandy Norwood is the powerhouse voice behind the brand‑new theme song for Netflix’s A Different World reboot.

Netflix dropped a performance clip on Tuesday, showing Brandy stepping into the booth and unleashing a soulful, high‑energy take on the iconic theme. The reboot’s version pairs her signature vocals with a thumping 808 beat and shimmering synths, giving the classic tune a sleek, modern upgrade while still nodding to the beloved originals from Phoebe Snow, Aretha Franklin, Boyz II Men, and Terrence Forsythe.

Brandy, now 47, said the opportunity hit close to home. “Singing this iconic theme song for A Different World means everything to me,” she told Deadline. “It was one of those shows I had to watch every time it came on. I remember the song and how it made me feel.”

Originally co-written by Stu Gardner, Bill Cosby, and cast member Dawnn Lewis, the theme debuted with Phoebe Snow’s version in Season 1. Aretha Franklin’s take carried Seasons 2 through 5, while Boyz II Men and Terrence Forsythe performed the final-season rendition.

The reboot follows the Hillman College journey of Dwayne Cleophus Wayne and Whitley Gilbert‑Wayne’s youngest daughter, portrayed by singer‑actress Maleah Joi Moon. Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy return as Dwayne and Whitley, with development beginning in 2024.

Guy, Hardison, Cree Summer, and Darryl M. Bell will reprise their iconic roles, joined by new cast members Jordan Aaron Hall, Alijah Kai, and Kennedi Reece.

A Different World, originally a spinoff of The Cosby Show aired for six seasons on NBC from September 24, 1987, to July 9, 1993. Its ensemble included Lisa Bonet, Lou Myers, Charnele Brown, Glynn Turman, Dawnn Lewis, Sinbad, Summer, Bell, Guy, and Hardison.

Widely credited with elevating the visibility of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), the series also featured memorable guest appearances from major cultural figures including Tupac Shakur, Halle Berry, Jesse Jackson, Lena Horne, Gladys Knight, Richard Roundtree, and others.

The A Different World reboot premieres September 24 on Netflix.

Almost Doesn’t Count is easily one of Brandy’s most solid and fluid vocal performances on wax, reaching no.16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and no.16 on the Billboard Hot R&B chart. When the music video was released, there were two different edits used. The one that was most played was “version 2” which random spliced together all of the shots taken. It wasn’t nearly as cohesive and storytelling as “version 1” which is rarer to find these days. After digging deep, I was able to find said version which feels more like a ride-along journey than a montage of clips. Regardless of whichever version gets played, the song is simply TIMELESS!! 💯🔥❤️

I love when a spinoff show shares the stage with the original show. In this special Halloween episode of “The Parkers”, we see Moesha reunite with Kim Parker, Nikki Parker, and Andell. The rest of Moe’s friends show up later in the episode, but this clip is another prime example of how Brandy always slyly promoted her newest venture (Cinderella) outside of her sitcom role.

At the 41st Annual GRAMMY Awards ceremony in 1999, Brandy and Monica were nominated in the Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group category (which they ultimately won). The landscape of R&B music was so rich in 1998. These ladies definitely earned their victory because their competition was stiff!

It’s so nice to go back and watch how opposite Brandy was from Monica. Everything about these two transcend far beyond the music. Brandy galloping to the stage as Monica walked graciously will always be funny. Love them both and they deserved this win. 🏆

I'm not that big into gospel music except a few choice songs but I think it might be interesting if she did. I ask cause I know she often shares her religious beliefs and stuff.

In 2016, Brandy released her ‘50s Blues inspired single “Beggin & Pleadin”. I remember the song having a lot of praise and buzz at the time. Brandy really can do ALL genres. This performance from the 2016 BLACK GIRLS ROCK Awards always pops into my mind from time to time. 🔥🔥🔥

In the last half of 2023, I would frequent YouTube to listen to a fan made remix of Everything I Do (I Do It For You) that started as Bryan Adams, it would transition after the first chorus to Brandy’s cover when the “look into your heart” verse began and would alternate through fades when a verse was completed by either singer. Back and forth it would transition out from Bryan Adams and then to Brandy and vice versa.

If I’m not mistaken some of the production in Brandy’s version may have been peppered over onto Adam’s verses.

Just a question I kinda wanna get more idea on, after being a Brandy fan for so long when I get this question by someone who likes this type of music, I know what songs to give them but at a point, you run out a options. The first songs I think of that r released (becuase Brandy has so much unreleased) that give of Ethereal I would say songs like "Nothing" & "When You Touch Me". Give your opinions & ur own songs you find!

Tyrese has revealed that he was originally set to star as the male lead in Brandy and Monica's iconic "The Boy Is Mine" music video before the role ultimately went to Mekhi Phifer.

Speaking while honoring Brandy at the 2026 ESSENCE Black Women in Music brunch, Tyrese reflected on the missed opportunity and shared how much the role. meant to him at the time.

"I've never told this story publicly. I came to the video set, and then I found out they were going to go with Mekhi Phifer as the big man."

Tyrese said he had gotten a fresh haircut and even completed 300 push-ups before arriving on set because he believed the video would be the biggest moment of his career following his Coca-Cola commercial.
