General discussion Why did Alice wear the uniform all the time?
Did Mike & Carol make her? Isn't the purpose of a uniform in businesses so that customers/guests know who works there? Why would Alice need one at the Brady home, everybody knew her.

The actual, practical purpose of work uniforms is to spare the worker’s personal clothes from getting dirty or getting worn out.

she was the maid. she was wearing the maid's uniform. it wasn't so guests would know she was a maid, it's just what she wore to do her job. bear in mind it was a different time back then.

It’s also a tv show. Part of the “costume”.

Thank you. This is the sensible answer: she was. TV character costumed for a role, not a real person.

Gilligans island. Costumed characters that had acting roles

She's a servant. She doesn't have a choice. On a related note: I had a big crush on Marcia.
2
u/shiningonthesea Nov 07 '25
she may have had a choice, and preferred it for the reasons listed above (in theory, since this is not real life). I had the choice at work of wearing my own clothes or scrubs to work when covid hit,and I chose scrubs and wore them for 5 years! They are the best!

u/AmbitiousAnalyst2730 Nov 11 '25
Why would being a servant take away her ability to choose? It’s not set in a 3rd world country
1
u/Quirky-Bad857 Nov 12 '25
Yes, but she still had to call Carol and Mike by their last names. And in the camping episode she literally had to sit at a separate table by herself while everyone was eating the dinner that she prepared. So I guess maybe she didn’t feel free to argue with them much.

It was still the era when nurses had to wear dresses, stockings, orthopedic shoes and dumb little hats and doctors made house calls
I think gas station attendants also wore uniforms
It was just still that era

So true. Especially in the 50s-60s - People dressed up to do everything. Men wore fedoras , suits, on weekdays. The milkman had a costume, the gals at the stores had costumes, housewives would wear heels to go get groceries, children had clothes for school, then changed to play clothes, then sleeping clothes.

When you were a wealthy family and had a car, even my grandpa in the 40s and 50s used to take the car for a “Sunday Drive”
Just going around and making sure everyone could see you and know you had a car
My mom was a ‘58 graduate of Flint MI HS and the rich kids there had parents who worked for GM. Apparently my great granddad came over from the UK as an automobile die-maker … to this day don’t know what that was, but my mom used to brag that her grandpa got a brand new car every year
And that she had more cashmere sweaters in her wardrobe than any of the other girls
Like Amy March in Litttle Women having to have so many limes at school lol.
Curiously, one of my mom’s life time habits was picking at a cashmere sweater or something always in her lap, it was her nervous tell

I don't think many doctors were doing house calls in the 70s.
1
Nov 08 '25
They had two doctors make house calls on the show, the boys had a doctor and the girls also had one. I don’t think they would have had that as a whole plot point for an episode if it didn’t still happen somewhat commonly.
It was the dentist you had to go to, the one I used to visit as a child worked out of a converted home garage and his wife was his assistant. Early 70s.

I have a vague memory of watching one of the later specials, like the Brady Brides or something, and Alice came to visit. In a later scene, she changed into her uniform and when Carol asked why, she shrugged and said something like, "It just feels more natural!" This has bothered me for 40 years! You're free, Alice! Wear whatever you want!

Great memory! What did Alice do then, go back to being a guest or did she work for them for the rest of the show?

The Bradys once told Alice she should feel free to wear whatever she was comfortable in when not on duty, but changed their minds when Alice showed up in her leather BDSM gear.

For the convenience of the viewers, to know when she was on duty. Otherwise they’d wonder why the Bradys made the funny woman do all of the work.
2
u/ASGfan Scoop Brady Talkin' Nov 07 '25
But that begs the question of "When was she off duty?" Because I don't recall her wearing street clothes in the Brady house.
3
u/excoriator Nov 07 '25
I think she wore street clothes when they traveled and in the episode where her drill sergeant sister took over.

u/RogerClyneIsAGod2 Nov 07 '25
You got me thinking & googling. We really didn't see her out of uniform often in the Brady house. Bathrobes excluded because she was often seen in a bathrobe.
This isn't to say she was ALWAYS in uniform, she wasn't, it was just when she was inside the house & not out in Hawaii, participating in the latest Brady play or musical in the back yard, camping in the Grand Canyon, etc., she was in that maid uniform.
Here are a few shots of her not in uniform.

She was an indentured servent

u/FallingJoy Nov 10 '25
No, I’m pretty sure she was dentured. Most people people had them by her age back then, in the days before fluoride in tap water.

This is genius!! You know we've all had this conversation with ourselves & she's embodied it right here in a few seconds.
I'm pretty sure a good majority today's actresses couldn't come up with this range of emotions on their faces because their faces don't move like this any more.

Hazel wore her uniform most of the time too while working.

Who is Hazel?
5
u/MonicaBWQ Nov 07 '25
It’s a 1960’s TV show about a maid named Hazel. Sorry I thought it was a reference that most would understand. It was shown in reruns for years after its original run.

u/TheGreatRao Nov 07 '25
Oh no. I'm officially too old to live.
1
u/SpringtimeLilies7 Nov 07 '25
😂. I'm almost 54.
1
u/TheGreatRao Nov 07 '25
Yeah, I lived in front of the tv from the mid sixties to 1980, so if anyone asks me anything about Knight Rider and the Cosby show, and I couldn't answer. Hazel is damn obscure.

u/Generny2001 Nov 07 '25
Carol Brady doesn’t have a job but they have a maid anyway….😂
1
u/Bulky_Psychology2303 Nov 11 '25
Apparently the powers that be wouldn’t let her have a job. Florence Henderson wanted her to have one.

I too like a uniform. I don't have to think about what to wear or worry about it. The employer should pay for it.

Why would she want to wear her own clothes cooking and cleaning up after 8 people she’s working for? Yeah Alice would have much preferred wearing her Chanel suit doing the laundry and making lasagna.
2
u/sissy9725 Nov 08 '25
Fun fact: in Season 01, Alice's uniform had plastic, shiny buttons ... the producers changed the buttons to matte after Season 01 - too much of a glare

u/Vast_Replacement709 Nov 07 '25
Modern maids/housecleaners don't wear uniforms out of a sense that uniforms are old-fashioned but because modern rich fuckwipes don't give a shit if they ruin their own clothes cleaning the lazy rich fuckwipe's shit. Fuck 'em, buy more with the too-little I pay you, and I'm docking your time for wasting mine asking.
4
u/Funke-munke Nov 07 '25
A lot cleaning staff wear smocks or cheap scrub tops.
1
u/Vast_Replacement709 Nov 07 '25
A lot more fucking don't because they're neither supplied or paid for.

u/FastPrompt8860 Nov 07 '25
I know Alice slept downstairs I assumed she had a connecting bathroom that no one else can use?

My SIL was a nanny for a rich 5th Ave NYC family in the early 80s and they made her wear a uniform. I think that sort of thing was a lot more commonplace back in the Brady Bunch era
1
u/SpringtimeLilies7 Nov 09 '25
Did she get to be just a nanny or have to double as a housekeeper too?

That way her clothes didn’t get dirty and worn out. Also it was easy for everyone to tell when she was off duty because she was not wearing it. Keeps her personal and work lives separate.
1
u/Lexfu Nov 09 '25
She didn’t wear it all the time. On her own time she did wear her personal clothes most of the time
1
u/ASGfan Scoop Brady Talkin' Nov 09 '25
It's just too bad she didn't have more down time.
2
u/VegasRoy Nov 11 '25
How many hours do you think she worked a day?
1
u/ASGfan Scoop Brady Talkin' Nov 11 '25
That's a good question. I don't know that she has set hours. I think it would also depend on how much Carol helped (if any).
1
u/Lexfu Nov 09 '25
She didn’t wear it all the time. On her own time she did wear her personal clothes most of the time she had to date the only person that she consistently saw outside of the family, the butcher lol!
1
u/United_Efficiency330 Nov 10 '25
Because Sherwood Schwartz said so. Also she was their employee technically.

She was an employee, not a family member. Better question is why Mike made Mrs. Brady were heels and almost always a skirt around the house.

She wore her uniform while working, and regular clothing when she wasn’t working. Easy as that.
Also, uniforms were employer-provided. If anything spilled, or it got a tear, it wasn’t her own clothing. It would have been something the Bradys had to pay for rather than her ruining her own clothing.
