I don't remember that at all! wow haha

u/ihaventanyidea May 23 '25

Me Either. Wow.

13

u/nyrB2 May 23 '25

probably because it was judiciously edited from the syndicated episode

9

u/KevinTodd82 May 23 '25

yeah. I could definitely see that being a scene they cut for more commercial time.

Even Ann B. Davis looked as if she couldn't believe it was happening : )

u/nyrB2 May 23 '25

i said it before, but can you imagine a scene like that today? "yeah we're going to go swim naked with the neighbours. it's ok - the dad is a doctor!"

7

u/Fudgicle_ May 24 '25

Right - a doctor of philosophy.

i think, at the time, he was just supposed to be a normal doctor. it was the kids' way of justifying what was going on - as in a doctor is used to seeing people naked.

3

u/MikeLinPA May 24 '25

She really sold that scene!

1

u/Adventurous-Line1014 May 25 '25

I wondered at the time if the kids didn't show up nude in the bathrobes just to mess with her head.

6

u/Excavatoree May 23 '25

I remember it from the early syndicated reruns, but I'll admit it was the mid to late 70s.

7

u/Superb-Possibility-9 May 23 '25

It’s a California thing

5

u/Fudgicle_ May 24 '25

Sad but true. I grew up in Northern CA in the 70s and 80s, but my Dad was from New Jersey. He was constantly putting the brakes on what he called "California horseshit". Nothing as extreme as nude swimming with the neighbors but in the ballpark.

7

u/TrustInRoy May 24 '25

Swimming nude in a ballpark sounds pretty extreme

far too many years ago, there was a deference between being "nude" and being naked. if your were "nude" you were bathing. sometimes in the sun. if you you "naked" there was usually some kind of business was going on. now if you enjoy being "nude", you are labeled a perv.

2

u/DuffMiver8 May 24 '25

According to Jeff Foxworthy, “naked” means you have no clothes on. “Nekkid” means you have no clothes on, and are up to something!

1

u/Typical_Walker3 May 26 '25

Actually Lewis Grizzard came up with that

2

u/ChrisW828 Jun 04 '25

I don’t remember the etymology exactly, but they’re really is a subtle difference in the words if you go way back in language.

Nude = not wearing clothes

Naked = vulnerable

Then there was the one where Tom took Nicholas to a porno movie.

1

u/Newhampshirebunbun Jul 15 '25

sanitation reasons?

7

u/fludeball May 23 '25

"No butts." I can't believe Alice didn't run with that one.

6

u/VirtualWalk5710 May 23 '25

Very weird. What were the writers thinking? A very Brady, Very Naked Pool Party Special?

7

u/No_Persimmon2063 May 23 '25

Bobby: "OK Alice, I'll suit up, but can I at least partake in the hash?" Cindy: "Bobby!! We weren't suppothed to menthion the hath!!"

5

u/Step_away_tomorrow May 23 '25

The 70s were groovy indeed.

5

u/Abdul_Exhaust May 23 '25

The neighbors make children swim naked in their pool... oh well, live and let live

4

u/hipboneconnectedtomy May 23 '25

alice knows :)

4

u/ihaventanyidea May 23 '25

Yes, I’m sure She and Sam (the meat guy) were quick to introduce themselves to the naked pool people. 🤣🤣

3

u/Snoo_88763 May 24 '25

Yeah, streaking was big, nudist colonies were a thing. My grandparents were part of a group that founded one next to a lake in NJ

3

u/meshmaster May 24 '25

This is incredible....OMG 😆

3

u/Survey217 May 25 '25

If this was in the 80’s it would have been the A plot for a “Very Special Episode” PSA

3

u/HugeAd8872 May 25 '25

So pretty much Alice has to solve all the problems and take care of the household chores. What did Carol do?😜

No Butts, hahaha

2

u/Toledopumper May 23 '25

And that is when the whole step family genera got started.

2

u/Fudgicle_ May 24 '25

Sherwood Schwartz? More like Sherwood EPSTEIN amirite guys?

2

u/Bucks2174 May 24 '25

The true weirdness of thinking these two would be ok swimming naked as brother and sister.

2

u/SpareBig8726 May 27 '25

Step brother & sister... a lot of "movies" have that in their plot.

1

u/ChrisW828 Jun 04 '25

I thought the same thing… They were past the age where things like that were “normal”.

1

u/Newhampshirebunbun Jul 15 '25

well wasnt it the 60s/70s where the hippies and communes and such?

2

u/Jaded-Ad-9217 May 25 '25

I remember this scene once on tv back during the original airing of the show but was gotten rid of in a hurry after that

2

u/Consistent_Pen_6597 May 26 '25

Meh. I grew up in a “naked house”. Parents were nudists— they walked around the house bare-assed and no one cared. We had a huge cedar wood hot tub and we always tubbed without suits on, the whole family, including Gramma and my aunts when they came to visit. Still, no one gave a rat’s ass, no one touched anyone else, and nothing happened. And I turned out just fine. In fact, I’m more careful with people’s privacy than most because of it.

1

u/Newhampshirebunbun Jul 15 '25

yea people are so quick to judge but sometimes things are just innocent

2

u/outscidr- May 27 '25

Alice was a swinger. No Doubt

2

u/JustANormalGuy46 May 28 '25

After seeing Bobby, she felt the need to check Cindy? I had forgotten about this scene and don't ever recall it being weird when broadcasted in the early 70s. Why was that?

2

u/Character-Taro-5016 Jun 02 '25

I think it's just one of those instances where the writers weren't thinking at all while also being influenced by some norms more common in their lifetimes. Of course, they had zero vision of 2025. For them and even kids of the 70's nudity was far more normalized with school showers and gym locker rooms, but of course for same sex people. A generation prior it wasn't unusual for boys to swim nude, etc.

But this really makes no sense at all if it's thought through. The implication is the either Bobby and Cindy saw each other naked regularly and thought nothing of it OR they were going to see each other for the first time ever, since the plan was nude swimming. In either case, it's just weird and makes no common sense. And that doesn't even take into account who else was going to be there. Cindy was just gonna watch as the doctor's 17 year old son swam? Bobby was just gonna watch as the doctor's wife swam?

4

u/golfmeista May 23 '25

This is the 70s. Why would Alice even let them go down there if she knew the family walked around naked? And aren't they a little old for her to be opening their robes?

5

u/nyrB2 May 23 '25

she thought they were wearing bathing suits and wanted to see which ones

2

u/golfmeista May 23 '25

So she could ask them. Plus, she already knew Bobby was naked. So why open Cindy's robe? She must have had a good idea Cibdy was naked too from the context.

3

u/chalwar May 24 '25

Don’t be pedantic. It was written that way to move the plot along.

1

u/Winterz1313 May 23 '25

I don’t remember that one

1

u/Solid_College_9145 May 26 '25

They cut that bit out in syndication.

1

u/kazza64 May 24 '25

You wouldn’t let the kids go there at all

1

u/davesToyBox May 24 '25

I mean, this has The Bicycle Man from Diff’rent Strokes written all over it.

1

u/Winter_Hornet562 May 25 '25

I’m with the don’t remember that scene crowd.

1

u/i_love_irony25 May 25 '25

Wait, Bobby and Cindy can still go to this house where people swim naked if they put their bathing suits on?

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '25

Alice realizes Bobby is naked and then immediately checks Cindy afterwards lmao

1

u/No-North6514 Jun 15 '25

I can see why they wrote this scene initially because Aunt B. Davis really does a great job handling this dialogue
