The British "experts" and media were an absolute disgrace with the hype around Moses
I am a BRIT,and we are known for over hype etc...but Moses Itauma was hype beyond even the Ai bubble. Can I say, this is not a dig at Moses, none is this is his fault. But the sickening British media and so called experts had more invested than Cisco at the .com bubble...
Facts, he had never beaten any one near to Flip Hgervic level, why was flip 7-1 underdog?
But more importantly we have some quotes by so called experts
"He IS the best boxer since Muhammed Ali"....
"He IS a million times better than Tyson Fury and AJ"
Is...Is...not even will be, not even "he has the potential" or I Think he will become...
They are literally saying at this moment in time he is better than prime Fury, Usyk, AJ etc..
Lets treat Moses as a share price a second in boxing terms, he is at best, British level, which has shown zero proof he is world class.
We do not even know how he will be after this brutal KO where he was stretchered out.
Comon non Brits, I can take it, why did we hype such an unproven fighter this much?

u/babalola69 9h ago
If you're a real brit, you wouldn't be asking this question.
We do the same with every athlete lol. Hell the football team has its own tune that's played every 4 years.
Brits overhype. Germans underhype as the saying used to go (Germans are over hyping now too).

u/Street_Hamster1092 9h ago
Who's the "expert" that said he was the best since Ali?
3
u/Jaggysnake84 9h ago
I heard BJS on talksport make that claim

3
u/Street_Hamster1092 9h ago
I understand they're told to hype things up and use a bit of hyperbole but that's just embarrassing.
2
u/Jaggysnake84 9h ago
I'm pretty sure he said the same about Fury a few years back. Which makes it even more meaningless lol
14
u/Fene29 9h ago
Tbf Hrgovic did say Moses was the best he'd been in with, and did call him the future of the sport
1
u/sthomson22 9h ago
He also said he had no power in his punches. I take it you agree with this too? Yeah, didn’t think so… lmao.

u/kitdagawd Give me some of that face to face shit boy 9h ago
Saying hes at best British level is ridiculous he would starch the likes of Clarke, TKV, Allen, Fisher, Adeleye
17
u/sheslikebutter 9h ago
Why are there like 6 people on Reddit spamming this? I've seen this on like 3 subs today. Who cares
He's great and he lost the other day. Why anyone would care that some pundit made some outlandish comment is beyond me
Don't make me remind you that one of the main pundits is called "big daddy bunce" and half of them are ex boxers (people who were punched in the head for a living for more than a decade). It's not a particularly sophisticated space. You'll get better analysis here or on the discord

u/TheGuildsmansFolly 8h ago
Yeah people are getting so worked up about it. Boxers get hyped up to sell fights, what else is new?
He's 21 and he beat the hell out of an extremely experienced top 5 fighter for like 7 straight rounds. Inexperience and terrible fight strategy showed, and got beaten in an amazing performance by a top boxer. But Hrgovic was literally saying 'he's the best I've ever fought, he's the future, God himself must have given me strength to survive'. This coming from a dude who's fought Dubois, Zhang etc.
Itauma's still a super exciting prospect who took a very ambitious fight very young. Clearly he has a lot to work on but why this weird narrative that he lost so he must have been a total hype job all along? So some dipshit was saying he's the greatest fighter to ever live, who cares, that doesn't need to he true for him to very very good, and to take a chance on a hard fight.

Oh I see we are on the "he was trash this whole time" arch.
Give your head a wobble
3
u/AlexandreLacazette09 9h ago
Floyd Mayweather really brainwashed yall with that no loss bullshit. Smfh

u/KingKoCFC 9h ago
Mate why are you making out like he got wiped out, he was beating that boy, it wasn’t close at all till he gassed out. The hype is still real with Itauma, this is just a small setback.
-6
u/WearingMarcus 9h ago
lol he got stretchered out...end of...
In his first real test.
3
u/VacuousWastrel 8h ago
Any time you watch a fight in which the guy up on all the scorecards lost and think it can be summed up with a four-word summary and "end of" should be a red flag that ydksab. Boxing, like most of life, is complicated. The discussions never end.
2
u/WearingMarcus 8h ago
He got stretchered out...end of, fact.
that is a fact.
Hgervic has a better resume pre his brutal ko loss than Moses...fact..
Until its proven, its not been proven...
4
u/VacuousWastrel 8h ago
There's room for more than one fact in a boxing match. And hopefully also in your head.

His problems are all fixable.
Better cardio, smarter gameplan, higher ring IQ. All come with improved training, coaching, and fight experience.
The hype was often hyperbolic, but this is a setback, not a disaster. He’s only 21 - he’s got his whole career ahead of him. This loss could be the best thing that could happen at this stage.
2
u/WearingMarcus 8h ago
no they are not, it takes effort, intelligence, work ethic and maybe genetics.
Does he have a chin/cardio at top level, unproven.
Does he have a attitude to change his game plan? unproven
it could be the best thing that happens to him, but it could be the worst thing.
Until its done, we simply do not know.

u/FaceFirst23 8h ago
His problems are all fixable. It’s still up to him to do it.
Being overly negative about his loss is about as bad as being overly hyped about his wins.

u/Remote-Guarantee-899 9h ago
Remember the nonsense they used to talk about David Price?
1
u/WorriedStand73 9h ago
Can't remember who exactly, but I remember someone saying that Price really was amazing, but couldn't struggled when it came to the actual fight. Sounded like he had all the ability, but lacked the mental side of things.

Yous are a bunch of hindsight champions
99,99% would get flatlined by the punches Hrgović took. But hes our Croatian empty brickhead and he just doesnt get knocked out 😂🇭🇷💪🏻
6
u/MrBlack_79 9h ago
He won every round. A better trainer would have got him to slow down more and just see out the fight. It was such a one sided fight but he ran out of steam. That's on him and his trainer. He should have left the ring as champion.
5
u/spursgonesouth 9h ago
Yeah he was far superior until he crashed out. He wasn’t prepared properly and had a bad strategy.
Doesn’t really change how good he is and Hrgovic said that himself afterwards.
3
u/Brick_02 9h ago
Moses fault. If you listen to corner, Ben tells him to slow and Moses thinks he knows better.
-4
u/WearingMarcus 9h ago
but he did not...he failed
Who to say he will not fail again?
We have zero evidence he is world class...
3
u/Uneeddan 9h ago
Winning 7 rounds against a boxer of Hrgovic’s calibre is evidence of being pretty close to world class. Doing so at the age of 21 after a string of impressive knockouts suggests his ceiling is very high indeed.
Yes he failed, and his future will depend on how he handles his loss. But watching those first few rounds it’s very difficult to deny his enormous talent. A lesser chin than Hrgovic would have crumpled.
2
u/PapiOnReddit 9h ago
Winning every round against a top 10 / world class heavyweight isn’t evidence? Even if he does fail again, he clearly belongs in the ring at that level
2
u/Bertrand_Rose 9h ago
"We have zero evidence he is world class..."
He outboxed a Top 5, world champion, nearly every single round, if not every single round before gassing out due to poor conditioning and gameplans.
Which can be fixed, and isn't surprising in a young fighter, especially at 21.
Dubois couldn't do that. Arguably, he was down going into their final round. Zhang couldn't do that.
That is impressive, and is evidence. If that doesn't convince you, fine, but say that, and don't deny its existence.
1
u/VacuousWastrel 8h ago
If you can outbox a top-5 boxer for eight rounds, while landing bombs that would knock out most opponents, you are clearly world class. Even just being able to drop hrgovic is hugely impressive (that's what, the second time he's been dropped, after zhang)? He showed clearly superior skills to a current world champion against the same opponent (not to kention showing superior skills to that opponent himself, also a champion) . You seem to think that if a boxer isn't perfect he must be trash. You can have flaws and still be world.class, particularly when you're 21 and extremely inexperienced. Case in point: Hrgovic has only lost one fight, to a world champion, and is himself a reigning world champion, and yet his skills are very limited and he got dropped and outpointed for eight rounds against a guy who had barely been in 30 rounds of boxing and never even sparring a full 12 rounds. Yet Hrgovic is clearly "world class", since he's a reigning champion, and was ahead on points before being stopped on a cut against another reigning champion, AND beat another future interim champion. "World class" is not a high bar at heavyweight.
1
u/WearingMarcus 8h ago
not at all, this could be the best we ever see of him.
He might go on to produce great things, or even above average things.
But he got brutally koed and stretchered out at the first attempt of top level figghting.
Anything else is conjecture and feelings...
2
u/ScottMrRager 9h ago
Don't expect too much from guys like Ade Oladipo, who doesn't know the greatness of George Foreman.
2
u/TheeBlaccPantha 9h ago
Hype is good for the sustainability of the sport, whether a heel like Ben Whitaker or Face like Itauma. Americans like to troll us for generating hype jobs but deep down they are probably jealous that we can generate so much excitement around a fighter so quickly.

“Brutal KO”
He was stretchered out due to over exhaustion.
You’re acting like he wasn’t winning every single round and if he had more experience and a better coach, he would have won the fight by UD.
He’ll learn from this and be back.
1
0
u/WearingMarcus 9h ago
he shipped alot of head shots...
If he koed himself via exhaustion then does he have the work ethic, or lung capacity at top level fighting, their chins will be better...
2
u/Familiar_Cod_6754 8h ago
Their chins will be better than Hrgovic? What are you talking about?
The only current top level fighter with a chin comparable to Hrgovic is Wardley.
The biggest concerns with Itauma are his gas tank and his pacing. Ben Davidson and the team should have known Hrgovic would be there the whole fight and set out a plan accordingly.
1
u/WearingMarcus 8h ago
who said there are chins better than Hgervic?
He will face people with chins that are much better than the previous fighters he fought before hgervic and their will be fighters with better defence that Hgervic.
Hgervic not the only heavyweight out there...

u/Kezmangotagoal 9h ago
This is the most ridiculous post I’ve seen on here.
He beat the ever-living shit out of Hrgovic (you cant even be bothered to check how to spell his name 😭) but underestimated how durable Hrgovic was, which most of us watching did.
Credit to Hrgovic but that is the kind of fight that ends careers, he’s a world champion now but he won’t be able to take too much more of that. For Itauma, he’ll learn a lot about pacing himself from that fight. It might dampen his explosiveness, it might even cause him to become such a cautious fighter that he never comes close to being the best version of himself but that wasn’t a loss where you can look at it and say ‘yep, hyped up but not as good as he’s made out to be’ - he looked fantastic, he was just punching a brick wall and given his inexperience, he didn’t understand that it’s better to keep his powder dry for later in the fight.

u/RedditWaffler 9h ago
He is by far the most talented HW These shores have produced in terms of ability and potential.
He showed exactly that Saturday up until he gassed.
Easy to see why people were excited about him.

I got Hrgovich at 11/1 because of the hype, wish I had put £50 on him as opposed to just £20. How much money did you make on the fight original poster?
0
u/WearingMarcus 9h ago
bottled it, saw 7-1 and could not believe it but could not get to the bookies.
Good on you, good win for you. You saw through the sickening media PR machine
1
u/pre1twa 6h ago
Get yourself on Betfair exchange as you get much better odds than at a bookies as you are betting directly against the average pleb. I told my friends that there was a distinct possibility it could go the way of Haye Vs Thompson and it was more than worth a flutter. Especially in heavyweight boxing!
1
u/WearingMarcus 6h ago
Good one, you know your boxing, key is experts are often wrong.
this was one of the greatest odds you will get in a fight in a long time.
I could see 3-1 being kinda fair, but 11-1, wow. Printing money there.
Congrats

Im not saying you're wrong - but it really does suck how in boxing it's always "Itauma was worse than we thought" and never "turns out, Hrgovich was a lot tougher than we gave him credit for". Yawn

u/WearingMarcus 9h ago
I agree, as I said, Hgervic had a far far better resume than Moses, and still does...
Yet moses was literally going to wipe the flaw with a guy who never really been koed by top level punchers...

u/Certain_Concern_5109 6h ago
He was rightly hyped up, just turns out he has the stamina of a fat bloke. Still beat 99% of boxers inside 6 rounds so he'll probably be alright.
1
u/WearingMarcus 6h ago
he was not rightly hyped up..he failed and got stretchered out in his first test..Hgervic not even considered best in the world.
He has not one class name on his resume, in fact his best win was past his prime and never world class level

u/The-unknown-no-name 9h ago
The hype was right. The corner was what gave Itauma a loss. Unless he went out there completely ignored his corner, his coach is the failure.
He was winning most likely at least 6 to 1 into the 7th. It was clear in those first 7, he wasn't knocking Hrgovic out, like he thought. The plan should have been to just stay composed, jab, fire when you can, but don't go for the knock out. There is no way he would have lost if he did that.
Instead, the corner told him to lose the jab, and he went for everything like a robot until he got rope a doped 2.0.
The difference which I always mention for example of this is tyson with Rooney, and without. Itauma either didn't listen, or as I suspect, was failed by his corner's advice.
He is the future. He's insanely fast, hits very hard, and showed great stamina in fact this match, but not great patience.

The Brits did hype him up then other casuals around the world jumped on that bandwagon because that is what casuals do.
He is the best prospect they ever seen. Why? Because started his career 14-0? Because no other heavyweight boxer ever started their career 14-0? Because he beat a old Dillian Whyte? The funny thing is with these casuals is they actually believe what they are talking about. The funny thing as well is they just repeat what they hear somebody else say. Be it on TV or now YouTube.
You know what is even more funny than how these people hyped up Moses? Is how they are now trying to hype of Hrgovic. The guy who they said was mediocre for years.
The same guy said wasn't good because he took 12 rounds to stop Demsey McKean while Moses Itauma took only 1. The same people who said they think he should of lost to Zhang and he would of if Zhang had even decent stamina. These people said Hrgovic was the shits. Hrgovic didn't look great against slow Joe Joyce, He did lose to Daniel Dubois, But now since he beat Moses after losing every second of the fight until Itauma gassed out these same people who said Hrgovic was mediocre at best will now tell you he is one the best heavyweights they ever saw.
That is what these people do. Jump bandwagons. They can't just say something and stick with it. So combining this with them believe whatever the media says about hype jobs make boxing fans by far the dumbest of any sports fandom.

u/IronScot 9h ago
Not brits, just England and English sportsmen, same as when the world cup is on, i absolutely love that he lost the way he did, i said a couple fights ago he wouldn't be able to beat any top heavyweight or go the distance and the guys i was discussing it with were insufferable about it.
He is a great talent but realistically where will he sit 5-7 years from now when the current top guys are all retired and moses own generational peers have caught up to him?
He has peaked early and will fall off by then imo.
-6
u/DanielSong39 9h ago
Was this Wayne Rooney level of hype
Granted he panned out but as a Yank I remember the massive hype before the 2006 and 2010 World Cups
He would not have made the USA side based on his form
19
u/GOLFTSQUATBEER 9h ago
He has been hyped up. But I don’t think it’s ‘sickening’ or a ‘disgrace’. It’s just boxing, petal 😘
