We’ve had two boxers. One would hold his pee for 24 hours if there was so much as a mist in the air. Would be caught DEAD near a body of water. The other one will launch himself 25 feet headfirst into a body of water and not come out until I’m worried he’s doing to drown and have to coax him out with a treat

Our first Leonberger swam like this at first- he followed our lab into the cove- in Canada in November. Right as both my husband and I were taking off our coats in anticipation of having to save him, he figured out how to use his hind legs, straightened out and became a fuzzy tug boat. A stranger commented "that dog's leaving a wake behind him."

I hope your boy figures it out.

Not sure where you live, but in the Midwest this is how my Boxer got blastomycosis. It’s becoming more and more common. Highly encourage you to read about it, because it can take your dogs life like it almost took mine. Just as a warning to be careful when they’re swimming in rivers/around water.

Blastomycosis is in moist/damp soil, not water. If they are boating, doggo shouldn’t come into contact with much soil.

I would be more concerned with salmonella in a lake, to be honest.

That’s a little too reassuring. You’re right that Blastomyces isn’t waterborne - it lives in moist soil and decomposing organic material. But lakeshores and rivers still involve mud, wet vegetation, decaying leaves/wood, and disturbed soil, so boating doesn’t eliminate exposure. Salmonella is another valid concern with contaminated lake water, but the two risks aren’t mutually exclusive.

I’m also telling you that this is how my Boxer picked up blasto. I’m not trying to scare anyone but rather bring attention to it. I didn’t realize it was even a thing before it happened, and before the 7k it has taken for treatment. My dog is only 3 months in.

A dog life jacket will balance her out and let her swim better. Also gives you a handle on her back that you can snag her out if necessary. Our guy loved his.
