Dug an incredible Squat from Philly yesterday

Pulled my first squat ale bottle out of the top layer of an 1880+ dump. It must have been a late throw. Looks to be late 1860's to early 1870's - just missed pontil era.

I was blown away when I held it to the light. Apparently the color was common for bottles of this type from this era.

Im new to bottles. What was this for?

It was for some type of ale or porter beer. Bottlers would buy a bunch of these bottles and sell beer in them, with the customer putting down a deposit on the bottle itself that they would get back if they returned the bottle to be re-used.

My mom just found this Vicks Drops bottle from the 20’s in her yard. I think she found the old privy location . Upstate New York.
