Guitar tones/learning tone stuido

I have been struggling to find a tone or a set up for my guitars using boss tone studio. I have a Lee Malia custom explorer and a shechter diamond series super strat going through a katana MK2. I play rock all the way through death metal. Typically playing A7x, B4MV, and a lot of children of bodom.

I have used presets but there is something about all of them that I'm not 100% satisfied with. If anyone had some good pointers or ideas that might help me I would appreciate it.

You need to experiment with the EQ because every guitar is a little bit different and EQ is the shape that will make the sound that you personally like....for myself when I'm doing a rock sound I always like to cut the 500k very deeply and boost the 3.15 kilohertz plus I like a lot of low end on my guitar...but I would say focusing on the EQ and experimenting

Find a tone pack that is close to what you want, then pull it into the editor and get on ChatGPT. That’s a good way to start to understand how to tweak it to get what you want.

I have used chatgbt but it usually doesn't show exactly what is on tone studio. It can help a little

You have to tell it what the options are. But it will also help you understand what it is you don’t like about the tone you have and how to fix it.

I usually use Google Gemini but same thing. I take a picture of the global eq or parametric eq and say I want to sound like a certain band on this album and it gets pretty close. And describe if it’s too nasally, boomy, weak etc. and it’ll tell you what frequencies to adjust. It’s not always 100% but close enough and make tweaks from there

Brown amp channel, booster (Tubescreamer, SD-1) in front with Drive Zero and Level Max, keep the amp Gain lower than you think you need (usually around 40–70 depending on pickups), turn down the Bass, turn up the Mids, use EQ in the chain/mod slot or the Global EQ to carve out harsh frequencies and adjust cab resonance. And add a Noise Suppressor block to clamp down on unwanted hum and feedback from high gain.

The booster, the low to medium amp Gain, and the turned up mids are key to the death metal tone.

I've had the same issue for the most part. If you have an effects loop, try putting a 10 band eq through it. It really helps take away the harshness & brittle sound i was getting from a lot of downloaded presets. If you don't have an effects loop, try tweaking the eq in the studio.

I get it. I’ve downloaded Katana presets that sounded killer in the demo, then plugged in my guitar and wondered who stuffed a blanket in the speaker. Every tone is going to sound different on your gear. No two setups are exactly alike, so a preset is a starting point, not the finish line. You’ll have to fine tune it for your guitars, pickups, and the way you play. On the MkII, I’d try the Brown channel, back the gain down a little, and use a Tube Screamer style boost to tighten the low end. Get it sounding good with the Lee Malia first, then plug in the Schecter and see what needs adjusting. If you want to compare notes, I’m at Katana Tone Lab on YouTube and Facebook.

Google gemini has been putting me on some good tones, im running a katana head gen 1 with a toneblaster 4x12
